Rating: Summary: Deception Point Review: To sum up this book in one word "brutal" comes to mind. Dan Brown did not follow-up Angels and Demons ( which I found to be the best) and DaVinci Code well at all. The story is boring, the characters are boring, and worst of all the whole thing is very predictable.
Rating: Summary: WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Review: You will learn some facts and fiction from this reading. I couldn't put it down. It was GREAT!!
Rating: Summary: Formulaic, and contrived... Review: ...embarrasingly predictable, with dialogue on par with the average UPN sitcom. Alternately pandering and pedantic, it reads like a extravagantly overwrought screenplay treatment, complete with product placements and obligatory Big Explosion at the end.
Rating: Summary: Down to Earth in this NASA Tale Review: I loved The DaVinci Code, although I had trouble with one big twist near the end. While the latter issue did frustrate me, there was unquestionably magic in that book. The DaVinci Code made you feel like you were learning a miraculous secret, and it was just credible enough (whether it really is true or not) to be very satisfying.Notwithstanding its NASA theme, Deception Point, on the other hand, is squarely grounded on earth. Mr. Brown's signature detail is less impressive when it's about weapons and oceanography, as compared to ancient, religious "secrets." Tom Clancy has taught us more than we need to know about aircraft parts and Jacque Cousteau has left indelible images of plankton on our minds. As a result, Dan's long "factual" passages just don't deliver this time. The action will make for good movie preview highlights some day (a la Will Smith's "Independence Day" exterior White House scene), but whether the "baddie" in Deception Point could ever be that bad, on American soil, requires a modern day cynicism that I just couldn't muster. The notion that American special forces would gleefully follow some of these orders was just too far-fetched to be fun. On the upside, I thought Dan Brown captured nicely the tension between Senator Sexton (running for President) and his daughter, the heroine and heart-throb of the book. Those characters were very nicely developed, and I enjoyed all of their scenes very much. Same for the Senator and his beautiful chief aid. Rachel's love-interest theme was a bit two-dimensional, but I liked the way it was wrapped up in a very human, understated way. Overall, Deception Point doesn't get far off the ground, but it has some very enjoyable moments on earth.
Rating: Summary: Another Long Day Review: AS in the DaVinci Code and Angels and Demons the action takes place in one long day. The good news about this is there really is little time to develop characters. The books are a wild ride in every available method of transportation. It is natural to compare this effort to the two mentioned above. It is a weak third. The style is the same, a long day with the unknown person until the end driving the action. The problem with this book is the escapes were even more hard to believe, the scenarion was less believable, the escapes were outlandish and the ending was more contrived. Having said all of that I must admit it was fun to read.
Rating: Summary: Possibly better than DaVinci Code! Review: Dan brown is an excellent author. DaVinci Code is one of my all-time favorite books. Having said this, Deception Point is a very very close second. Dan Brown's research is unmatched and as a result, his novels are almost as educational as they are fun to read! And, just when you think you have this book figured out-surprise! Buy this book along with one other book because you will probably finish Deception Point in a few days.
Rating: Summary: Great stuff. Review: I just love books like this that respect the reader so much. It's so readable, completely unselfindulgent, and you're happily entrenched in escape-from-the-world mode from cover to cover. Also, personally I'm a great fan of all the amazing new technology that comes out but I'd never have time to learn about it. In Dan Brown's books, one of the things I look forward to is knowing that he's going to teach me about all the cool new stuff, in a way that shows how it might all actually be used, for good or for evil, and I always come away feeling like my knowledge is right there on the cutting edge! I just have a ton of respect for an author who does so much homework about interesting things and does such a good job at making it so much fun to absorb for his readers. It's something I've always liked about Tom Clancy, but I now think I like Dan's books more because they always keep the energy level up and don't drag on with filler like it seems Clancy's books now do. I find Dan's books somehow entertain me in the effortless, direct way a great movie does: I can just sit down and sink into the great story and, and I mean this in the best possible way, I don't really have to think; it's not like reading, it's more like watching a great flick. You kind of just sit back and enjoy the ride - the story just flows into you. I'm always sad to finish them because life seems so mundane afterward. For fun, if you are open minded and looking for those books begging for its pages to be turned...look no further. I just read a copy of Edgar Fouche's 'Alien Rapture,' which also blew me away. Fouche was a Top Secret Black Program 'insider', whose credibility has been verified over and over. I also really liked Dan Brown's 'Angels and Demons.' Want to be shocked, check out Dr. Paul Hill's 'Unconventional Flying Objects' which NASA tried to ban. Anyway, great stuff.
Rating: Summary: Intersting and well-plotted mystery ! Review: I am a fan of Dan Brown and enjoy all of his work (anything he writes is wonderful in my book), but "Decpetion Point," has got to be one of his best to date! I was hooked from beginning to end!
Rating: Summary: Very, very, very good Review: Like all of Brown's books, this one is chocked full of facts and fictions, so expertly blended that it's possible to get lost (and I mean that in a good sense) in the story. Much better written than THE DA VINCI CODE, this book is probably the second best of his efforts, ANGELS & DEMONS taking first place. The characters in this book are better developed than most, and the story was well-paced. Overall, one of his best. Also recommended: BARK OF THE DOGWOOD by McCrae
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: Instead of writing a review and telling everything that happened in this book, let me just say -- this book was great! I couldn't put it down. The twist was unexpected. You will love it.
