Rating: Summary: I loved this book! Review: I am an average American. Generally, I am content to go about the daily business of living my life. I am not an activist. I love the Academy Awards and I love Michael Moore! This book hilariously shows the mounting evidence of why this administration is so hungry for war and why the rest of the world is so horrified by American actions -diplomats are resigning, non-activists are protesting, and the media is sleeping. I particulary loved the chapter full of questions for this administration - questions that I've never seen answered (or even asked!) before. I could not put this book down - it's an excellent and timely read and helped me better understand what is going on in this world gone crazy.
Rating: Summary: Amen! Review: Michael Moore has done it again! He has brought us another book that is serious and yet funny at the same time.Dude Where's My Country is alarming and informative. It talks about everything from tax cuts, to oil, to why the French should be commended for what they said about the Iraqi War. The book is well balanced; it goes from solemn and somber to hilarious in a space of a few sentences. Dude Where's My Country makes Stupid White Men look like pure entertainment. Anybody who has read this book and still supports Bush is not in their right mind. I am a sophomore at a local alternative high school and I can't wait to share this book with my 1st Hour Reading Class. Michael Moore is definitely a gift from above!
Rating: Summary: Just the facts, ma'am. Review: Hey folks, this is place for book reviews, not just somewhere to hammer your political stakes. If I want to know a good restaurant in which to eat, I don't get much help from people who say "that place sucks," or "it's awesome, maan." Those are not restaurant reviews. They are inarticulate blanket statements that tell me very little about culinary establishments. If some moron who doesn't like Italian food, but loves Chinese food, even if it is bad, makes those statements, I am not in a very good position to find a good restaurant. But, hey, Moore's book is not exactly fine literature either, nor is it supposed to be. It is the stuff that touches nerves and induces one or two sentence leftwing or rightwing rants. While this may be bad for the Amazon book review section, it is good for political discourse. And that is where many "professional" reviewers (or the publicists who pick abridged comments) fare little better than the guy who likes lousy Chinese food. The first splash review on the back of the book exclaims "Moore is a comic genius." This comment is like a court reporter exclaiming "Kobe Bryant is a basketball genius" after covering a pretrial hearing. Well, Moore is damned funny, but the book is not primarily a comic work. Chapter 10 is hilarious, granted, but this is a book of serious political and social commentary peppered with quips and sarcasm. Moore fans already know that model, and they aren't the ones reading these reviews for the purpose of finding a good read. The book is a Bush-bashing of epic proportions, but the weapon for the beating is not weird conspiracy theories as some might want to claim. Sure, Moore suggests that the war in Iraq is about oil, that the terrorist threat is a Republican political tool to exploit patriotic sentiment, and other ideas that put grins on the faces of liberals and frowns on the faces of conservatives. But the plain well-documented facts in the book do the talking (as they do in any decent piece of research). Startling revelations of the Bush family's intimate business and social dealings with the Saudi Royal family are Moore's most powerful weapon. And, no, he is not relying on innuendo or rhetoric. Actually, he is using mainstream media sources, even those owned by arch-conservative Rup Murdoch. Moore describes how the Saudis were overtly protected from scrutiny after 9/11 by Ashcroft and company (to the great dismay of the FBI), while hundreds of other Arabs on American soil were rounded up like Japanese Americans during WWII, despite the fact that 15 of the 19 highjackers were Saudis. And that is just an appetizer. In all, the book effectively discredits Bush and his agenda - from tax cuts to the Patriot Act to foreign affairs. Moore is persuasive in describing Bush's presidency as an absolute disaster for the country (our country if you were wondering which one). On the disappointing side, Moore wants to have his cake and eat it too (the common pitfall of most political discourse). While Moore doesn't sketch out theories, he asks questions that imply, for example, that Osama wasn't perhaps as responsible as the Saudi establishment for 9/11. But he then asserts his desire for Osama to be caught and held responsible. This is a bit of a trap for Moore. He asks a lot of questions of Bush - legitimate questions that need to be answered. But the reader (particularly the unlikely conservative reader) may see these as rhetorical questions for which Moore is implying answers. The easy leap for the critic is "conspiracy theory." For those less likely to make that judgment, the problem may be more like the Osama one: Innuendo A is not consistent with Assertion B. Perhaps inevitable, this flaw is the soft underbelly for those wishing to dismiss other parallel arguments which are well crafted and well researched. Finally, does this book "suck" or is it "awesome?" Well, I read it in one sitting, which rules out "sucks." It is not awesome as in "awesome dude-meister!" It is awe inspiring for the plain questions it asks and the startling revelations it makes. Strip away all of Moore's prose if you wish, and you will be left with a body of research that should leave you sickened not only by Bush and his puppeteers, but by Congress, and maybe even your brother-in-law.
Rating: Summary: Dear readers of privilege and fancy word usage Review: First and foremost, Michael Moore is a man worth listening to. If you don't agree with him, or if you haven't made any REAL, TANGIBLE efforts to realize America's problems or just don't care, then your opinions matter only in the context of free speech. Let's face it, the Bush presidency is a joke and makes all Americans look foolish in its shadows. If somebody could tell me the last time somebody like Moore came about and attacked personal issues, in favor of those who fall through our great nation's (I mean no sarcasm)cracks, then they best step forward and announce that individual. Michael Moore represents those of us in America who live paycheck to paycheck, who believe in free speech, honor honesty and credibility, and believe in the common liberties provided us by the constitution. We believe there are several things wrong with America today which go beyond the typical whitebody evening news coverage. Yes, America, some of us cannot follow your lead making minimum wages, with our school systems going to hell and the overwelming lack of human compassion imprinted on every sububrban face not in danger of eviction or gang activity. "Making it" for many others isn't as easy as it was for you consdering not everyone is provided the same chances in life. More than likely, you don't understand what i'm speaking of, but if you lived a day in the shoes of many other Americans you haven't yet met outside of your work circle, then you might get the picture.
Rating: Summary: every american should read this book. Review: moore has essentially compiled a book's worth a facts about exactly what's going on with our unneccessary war and our evil president. why anyone would review this book negatively due to his lashing out at bush is beyond me...since it's all true. this isn't just a man's opinion, this book documents that we are being lied to on a grand scale and every american citizen should read it.
Rating: Summary: Wow!! What a pile of crap!!! Review: Shocking and deseptively persuasive, Moore's book is an easy read that should delight all those that have the money to buy it. One thing's for sure, after reading Moore's book, you'll wonder why you wasted the money to buy a new book when (according to Moore) you'll barely have enough money in your miserable life to ever buy anything new again. I am constantly amazed by the defeatist opinions expressed by some rich people. I guess our capitalistic society works for them but not for most of us. Should I be thanking Moore for saving me the trouble I would have endured by trying to obtain MY dreams? Is Moore so much more amazing than all of us that we should all lay down our hopes, aspirations, and guns to have our lives spoon-fed to us by the likes of Moore and his ilk. Simply put, this book is poison. Please do not buy this book. If you do read it, PLEASE take it with a grain of salt. Moore's opinions are NOT truthful nor are they at all helpful.
Rating: Summary: A Book Diagnosing the New American Dilemma Review: Of the books that critique the current state of America-'Bushwhacked' (Ivins), 'Lies and Lying Liars' (Franken), 'Thieves in High Places' (Hightower), among others-not one offers the kind of clear and direct "wag a finger in their faces and make me laugh" quality like this new book. This book, sprinkled with some of the best irony and humor in print today, gives a fine analysis of the Bush regime's smoke and mirrors game with our little war in Iraq-over in March of 2003, right? I suspect that Moore, if he can avoid being sent to debtor's prison for civil suits or some political dungeon like Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will emerge over the next two years as one of the triumphant voices in diagnosing the new American dilemma: how to rescue the Republic from the powers that be (The Bushes, in our present scenario of pain, and other right-wing hucksters). For all who want to take a look at where we're at in this sordid experiment of democracy, read 'Dude, Where's My Country?' No one speaks with as much bravery and courage as Michael Moore. I'm glad Moore had the guts to write this book. Someone needed to! ----------------------Reviewed by Dayne Sherman
Rating: Summary: It had to be said, but could have been said better Review: I am *thrilled* that Michael Moore wrote this book. He tackles almost every issue that has been crying out for attention since 9/11...Camp Delta, the Saudi connection, the Halliburton connection, the WMD lies, and on and on. He provides appropriate references throughout. Sadly, he also attacks. By doing so, he weakens his message. There is so much important information placed in the right context here. It's a shame that Mr. Moore feels compelled to frost it by taking the stance of the proud dissident. All of what he compiles, arranges, and argues is public knowledge (as he says frequently). And there is so much value in his composition and exposition. Yet with his strident, "I'm proud to be a rebel" tone, he alienates many (not me, though I'd probably try to get his goat at a cocktail party, just to see what happened) who would otherwise feel compelled to accept his premises, were he to maintain a logical, constructed path of reasoning. In the end, I prefer Al Franken's "Lying Liar's..." He takes the same fact-based approach (I admit, Mr. Moore throws more detail, which is, in my mind, a positive), yet refrains from the screeching tone that Mr. Moore ocassionally adopts. It's not a fair comparison. Mr. Franken is trying to reach a broad audience, with a softer, yet still accurate message, while Mr. Moore is trying to pound in the nails until we get it. I wish them both much publicity...and fall back on my initial statement. I am thrilled...or is it relieved...that Mr. Moore's book is doing so well. Regardless of your political views, there is much to be found within...all of it well-documented, if not properly contextualized.
Rating: Summary: Great if true, unfortunately it's not Review: Just like his movie, this book takes half truths and tries to make them into a convincing rant to get people to think the same way the author does. His movie used cut scenes and words used out of context to try to mislead. This book does the same even more obviously. It should be listed as fiction. The sad part is that someone might actually believe this fiction if they do not have personal experience with the material presented, just as his fictitious movie.
Rating: Summary: Conservatives are exposed!!! Review: It always amazes me that the very conservatives Moore accuses of lying so just that to justify their actions. No con reads Michael Moore and they seem to think that writing a "review" of a book they did not read will make them look intelligent; instead, I pity them. Liberalism made this country the greatest in the world and Moore is a true patriot who wants nothing more than for the truth to be told. It is about time the Ann Coulter's and Rush Limbaugh's of the world are outed for what they are: blowhards. Buy this BOOK!!!
