Rating: Summary: Evidence ? Review: Great and courageous book ! Mike Moore leads the way in what every responsible and informed citizen should be doing. ...looking further than his/her own nose. It amazes me that so many of the critical reviews of this book complain about the lack of evidence presented to support Mike Moore's views. Talk about evidence, we're still waiting on the evidence of the weapons of mass destruction. It also seems like many of the critics (have they even read the book ?) are confusing 9-11 and the Iraq war. Not even the government is saying that Sadam had anything to do with that.
Rating: Summary: Love it or leave it indeed! Review: The right wing extremists who suppose that we should give up the very freedoms they point to as making America great (i.e. as Ari Fleisher said, "watch what we say") are the ones who should leave it. It's people like Michael Moore who love America enough to fight for it to be the kind of place it promises. People who want to live in a blindly nationalistic country should move to Iran and leave America to real patriots. I don't plan on leaving; I plan on fighting those who want to suppress free thought and free speech. Moore's book is a much needed call to arms in a world of corporate propaganda-meisters like Ann Coulter, Bill O'Reilly, et. al.
Rating: Summary: A plea for fairness Review: This review is intended as a brief response to another review, "#1 Traitor to the US", posted December 16, 2003. 4 points:1. A US citizen complaining about US policy, or about abuse of governmental power, is not a traitor. The Framers held the view that unquestioning allegiance to a principle or nation was the source of much tyranny in the world. Indeed, this is largely why they sought to establish a democracy instead of another monarchy. Plurality, both in powers and in ideas and in voices, was the promise of democracy. Despite much contemporary urging to set aside your conscience and support your nation no matter what path it takes, such urging is exactly what the US government was established to defeat. And indeed, the blunder of Vietnam is a lesson on this very point. It took 4 US administrations to realize what the American people had figured out for themselves (the latter guided by the courage to question the decisions their leaders were making): the installation of democracies is a delicate process, and cannot always be achieved by force. Nations need to embrace democracy, largely by choice, if and when they mature enough to recognize its value; democracy cannot be waged. 2. Our country was founded on the premise that, e.g., life and liberty are not "privileges", but fundamental rights. You suggest otherwise when you claim freedom of speech to be a privilege, and that Moore is abusing that privilege. Unlike privileges, rights cannot be abused; only exercised. Also, America is not "one of the very few countries that has the freedom of speech". The far majority of contemporary non-theocratic nations recognize that freedom of speech is a fundamental right, just like we did in our Bill of Rights. This recognition has become something of a rite of passage for nations maturing to a point where they themselves recognize the essential safety that allowing multiple points of view provides. 3. A majority of religious traditions, including my own, would fault Moore for *not* speaking out as he has. This is because pointing out injustices (such as deliberate intention to mislead others, and suspension of the rule of law to further one's own agenda, both of which mounting evidence suggests President Bush has had and done), especially perpetrated by those who would claim to be doing our bidding, is not for us a right, much less a privilege, but a solemn duty. 4. I rated this book 4 stars because I think it rates 3 stars on content, but 5 on courage. Moore does have a fondness for the soapbox, and for speculative thinking. Still, there does need to be a counterweight for the many highly uninformed "neoconservative" books in circulation, many of which attack or distort the very principles that founded this country -- e.g., equating freedom of speech with treason. Ironically, the constitutional principles some neoconservatives attack are what protect their speech, and allow their books publication.
Rating: Summary: #1 Traitor to the US Review: Moore has got to be the most ungrateful, spoiled child. If he would just look at himself he would relize his skin is white! This title should the the title of his Auto-Biography. Many huge loopholes in his arguments. I wonder if he has ever visited a 3rd world country! If he saw how in places like the middle-east, how they live in mud huts and are poorer than any country in the world, he might think twice before embarassing himself like this. I really look at this book and only see Moore's biased opinions. All I can say is, "Micheal, we aren't making you stay in this blessed country. You've got Canada to the north and Mexico to the south." Moore may have the freedom of speech but half of these blind Liberals abuse it as if a natural right(America is one of the very few countries that has the freedom of speech), and use it against the very country that gave them these privlages. What do you think the veterans of past conflicts who fought and died for America think of you? You scoff at our military whose boots you aren't worthy to shine, the brave men who go into battle so you can live in fame and luxury. We caught Saddam, who you said would "most likely would slip away like the last time..." This shows that there is a cause for the sacrifice men and women are making in the Middle East. You accept your citizenship here with more ease than you think. I served in the Vietnam War with the 7th Air Cavalry and came back to stupid, teenage, brainless hippies spitting on me and calling me a "baby killer". All I could do at that moment was think back of how our boys and my friends fought and died in those damned rice paddies for nothing and we did not question because we didn't want to turn out to me someone like Moore. We deserved a heros welcome home. If we got back from Iraq and you and your brain-washed Liberals criticise the soldiers, by god...... Readers, get your heads out of the dirt and smell the trade towers burning. Do not listen to this "tons of fun" moron. God Bless America! Douglas Montague, 7th Air Cavalry Division
Rating: Summary: One day.... Review: I have a dream... that one day, all Americans will begin to read as to make an educated judgment. The saddest part of being an American is our obvious ignorance. I have heard so much critisim about Mr. Moore from people who just don't read anything. And when you speak to them, it's obvious that they don't read. I have a dream that as a super power, all Americans will read something prior to giving an opinion. (Now, that would be a perfect place to live.) ari with a smile
Rating: Summary: Crammed and Confused Review: The book is too crammed full of issues and too pre-occupied with 'playground-humor' to be of any real value. It fails to give adequate defense of it's many conjectures. Though, admittedly, some would be difficult to defend even if given adequate attention. Furthermore, it is too agressive and too divisive, hinging on a number of false presuppositions.
Rating: Summary: Make More Money - Republicans... Review: here's how you can make more money: Don't spend your money on this book, allow your liberal neighboor, or relative to buy it. Then borrow it, and read it cover to cover in secrecy. Follow the detailed suggestions, and you will make more money, lots more money!
Rating: Summary: a review nonetheless Review: there must be a reason why moore's Dude, Where's My Country has gone #1 non-fiction in this country, regardless if it's good or bad (it's all relative). the point is the material in this book is controversial enough to make it #1 in the country. curious what all the talk is about? then pick up this book and read it for yourself you'll either love it or hate it for the reviewer who's title was: What The Heck is Going On? on Dec 14th who called himself: Probably One of the Only People That Reviewed this Book and Lives In The Real World from Bay City, MI USA you obviously HAVE NOT read this book, or if you have, you did not comprehend.....otherwise you wouldn't GUESS that moore's a democrat. go back and see for yourself that he is Independent
Rating: Summary: Writing on the day when Saddam Hussein was captured Review: I am reading the latest negative reviews of Michael Moore's book on the day when Saddam Hussein is captured. And I feel obliged to come in defense of the author. The critics oversimplify Michael's standpoint by suggesting that in opposing the war he supports the Hussein regime. No, he does not! Michael Moore defends the principle of justice. He writes that it was the United States of America who armed Saddam Hussein and encouraged his atrocities. It was the United States of America who violated its own constitution and the UN charter by unilaterally going to war. And it was the United States of America who killed thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians in order to destroy Saddam's dictatorship. Today everybody is engulfed with emotions, but only future will show us whether the capture of Hussein yields the most desired result - reduction in US casualties and formation of democracy in Iraq. Until that happens, I will be supporting Michael Moore by saying that the next regime change should be in the United States of America, and I will send this book as a present to all my voting friends.
Rating: Summary: love it or leave it, pal Review: Irregardless of what you think of the president or his policies, a modicum of respect is deserved by the office and for the men and women who volunteer in the armed forces to fight for the freedoms of people like Michael Moore. The country he wants to live in is called Canada.
