Summary: One of the Best
Review: As an avid reader of the Bible, I've listened to several different audio renditions of the Good Book. There are a lot of them out there -- various translations, various readers. But this reading of the New Testament by James Earl Jones is one of the very best in my opinion.

His rolling baritone voice and Shakesperian delivery are perfect for the hoary old King James Version. Unlike so many other taped Bibles, he doesn't try to dramatize the story. And he doesn't have that irritating "announcer voice" I've found on a couple of audio Bibles. Rather, he uses his voice as an exquisite tool to softly sing the lyrical words so lovingly crafted by the translators of 1611.

It truly becomes a soothing, spiritual experience to hear the shades of meaning he brings out. And frankly, his reading of the much-explained Book of Revelation made me see it in a new, almost poetic light.

Frankly, the only other audio Bible I'd rank up there with Jones' is Alexander Scourby's great reading of the King James. None of the others come close to these two. Scourby's is perhaps superior only in that he also reads through the enire Old Testament as well. If James Earl Jones ever performs that feat, I will surely purchase that (from Amazon, of course!) as well.

Summary: From a 29 year old that isn't well versed in the bible.great
Review: For all of you "searching for the truth and meaning of life" I think sooner or later everyone should sit down and read the Bible just to know what it has to say. For most, we don't have time and think,"I can't understand it anyway." I was looking for something like Bible interpretation for Dummies when I found this. I was not raised in a "go to church every Sunday" family. This tape set is perfect. James Earl Jones is the best for this with his distinguised voice. SO if you are a college graduate, I believe you will have no problem listening and understanding most of this without a book of intepretations. And the music is fine and does not overpower this great man's powerful voice.I wish they had it on CD!

Summary: Wait to buy til they ditch the music
Review: I had read several reviews on "James Earl Jones Reads the Bible" and most of them mentioned the music--some positive, some merely accepting, and some very negative. Because I've been searching for an unembellished, undramatized reading of the Scriptures, this should have sent up a red flag to stop me from purchasing it. However, I figured with James Earl Jones' marvelous voice, how bad could it be? I would suggest you hold off buying it until they produce another one without the loud, lame and distracting music and give us the choice.

Summary: An awesome rendition of the New Testament - worth every dime
Review: I love listening to these tapes. It brings pure, absolute peace and calm to our our home, and after a few minutes we're transported to another level and forget all about James Earl Jones. The music seems "digitized" (?) but for some reason fits perfectly and serenely into the background, and you just must play the tape to the end of every song to get it's full enjoyment. In my opinion, there is no voice on earth as mesmerizing or capturing as that of Mr. James Earl Jones. I just wish so much that he would do a combination of the Books of Proverbs and Psalms to totally make my day.

Summary: Do not operate heavy machinery while listening to this...
Review: I purchased this product to listen to during a long drive (12 hours each way). However, after only 20 minutes I had to stop playing it as it was soothing me to sleep. The narrator has a very consistent, repetitous rhythm to his reading, not quite monotone, but close. When combined with the constant 'lullaby' type background music, it is very relaxing...too relaxing. I not only felt like dozing off while driving, but found that the rhythm of the speaker occassionally made it difficult to pay attention to the actual words being read. James Earl Jones is such a powerful speaker, yet unfortunately he greatly limited his dramatic range for this reading. This would be a good product to listen to at night where dozing off to a biblical reading would be a great end to the day. Just don't take it on the road!

Summary: a recording that could change your life
Review: I've never gotten around to reading the bible so when I saw this James Earl Jones reading, I felt I should buy it. His voice is almost God like so, soon after you begin listening, you find yourself in an almost private dialogue with our saviour himself. It's true that the melodic background music is soothing and can put you to sleep, but I found that a bonus as I actually had dreams about my spirit lifting forth into the heavens and of Christ himself craddling my tired head in his arms. This reading can, and just might, change your life.

Review: It wasn't until I received the set- that I found out it was a recording of the New Testament only. The online description did not indicate the scope of the recording.
