Rating: Summary: don't buy this book, especially if you're a clark fan! Review: I was so disappointed with this book! I feel like I've been cheated! the authors have made a collage of snippets of their earlier novels and put them into this very bad novel! no suspense, no romance! nothing! I'm so disappointed! I was actually looking forward to this book! it's sad to learn that these two authors had nothing new to offer!
Rating: Summary: Interesting light read... Review: However, I had it figured out too soon~ The characters from past novels were a mystery to me, so my grasp of their importance was nil. I really liked the new characters introduced and found the antics of the "injured" novelist amusing as she tried to function from her hospital bed. Include the Christmas season and a kidnapping by amateurs and you've got a story with mild intrigue and danger. Enjoyable yet predictable ending.
Rating: Summary: Don't waste your money. Review: I never thought I'd give a book one star, but the only reason this rates that high is because the authors used complete, grammatically correct sentences. They are obviously writing for an established audience and for the fun of a mother-daughter collaboration and the book suffers as a result. They casually gloss over descriptions of their characters, telling us that one is a writer, one a PI and one a gifted amateur sleuth who won a lottery way back when. Not having read the other books where they were introduced, I never got to know them at all or feel why I should possibly care what happened to them next. The kidnappers are revealed at the very beginning, so there is absolutely no mystery, and the book fails equally in the areas of romance, comedy and suspense. Each step of the case is telegraphed in advance and fails to surprise or satisfy. I suppose a die-hard fan might add this to their collections, but if you are looking for a good mystery, good thriller, good crime novel, or good suspenseful romance, just walk away.
Rating: Summary: Iffy Review: This book was okay... It would have been better if written by only one person because I could tell when the writing seemed to change significantly and that tends to bother me. The story overall was good though. It's worth a chance.
Rating: Summary: Something's missing. Review: I love Mary Higgins Clarke and I read every book she writes from cover to cover. However, I was a little disappointed by this Christmas story. This book seemes to lack the usual suspense in Clarke's books. Usually, I feel the familiar shiver of anticipation when I get to towards the end of her books. This time I knew what was going to happen so I wasn't surprised. The case was solved a little too easily. This book just didn't hold my attention very well. Although, I would recommend it for a Mary Higgins Clarke fan as long as your expectations are low.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining Review: This was pretty good, plot-wise. At times the plot would get a little far-fetched or silly, but otherwise it was very entertaining for a short holiday-time read. It featured Carol Higgins Clark's fabulous female sleuth, Regan Reilly, in a case involving the kidnapping of her father and his friend. Mary Higgins Clark contributed by having a (rather irriating--all right, downright irritating) amateur sleuth from one of her books help her on the case. Other than that annoying addition, I really recommend this book.
Rating: Summary: A commercial gimmick Review: Both Carol Higgins Clark and her mother, Mary Higgins Clark are excellent writers and I have enjoyed their books in the past. But this book that combines their detectives into one story is contrived. The characters are interesting and humorous. But the plot never builds. I never felt the danger or the tension that should have been present in a kidnapping thriller.I recommend it to fans of the Clarks but the general public might find it slow and predictable.
Rating: Summary: Horrible Book - Not worth a penny Review: I have read many Carol Higgins and Mary Higgins Clark books and found them very superb, but this was a major dissapointment to me. When my dad got me this book for Christmas I was overjoyed, because I have started a collection of their books. From the first page that I started to read, my yawns got bigger and bigger. This book is full to the brim of zany characters, and has no real plot. Unlike most of their stories, this book lets you know who the kidnappers are right from the start. The clues that the detectives find could not possibly be found in real life unless these guys had a Sherlock type brain. In short I want to let Mary and Carol know that I am dissapointed in them and want to let them know that if they were not already famous and reknown that this book wouldn't have sold one copy. The book starts from the beginning with Nora Reilly breaking her leg, which in no way relates to the story, except to betray her as hopeless. When the kidnappers kidnap her husband Regan Reilly rushes to the rescue, but in the mean time falls in love with the head police officer Jack Reilly. The kidnappers could not, in real life hope to carry out their plan and the plot is very weak. These guys would of had to be stupid to use a plot from Nora Reilly's own books to let Regan drop off the money. And then the guy drops the money in the river, which had me rolling of my seat in laughter instead of the touch of suspense that they had hoped. Listen, all potential buyers out there. This book is not worth it. By my rating I am in no way saying that the rest of their books are just as bad, I am just advising them to think twice before they write a book together again. The characters in both of their books put together create something that would provoke a Higgins Clark fanatic!! - Christine Staik
Rating: Summary: Deck the bookshelf Review: It was with reluctance that I started to read this book. I had read reviews and had decided not to buy this book even though I don't miss a MHC book that is released. I borrowed Deck the Halls from a relative and sat down one afternoon to read it. And boy was I surprised! This wasn't the horrible book it was made out to be. In fact, I quite enjoyed it. Yes, you do find out the whodunit part quite early in the story but I found myself reading a breakneck speed to see if Luke and Rosita would be saved. I liked the comedy aspect of this book. It added a new dimension to the story. I found myself laughing at Petey all the way through If you are looking for a light, quick read pick up this book. You'll definitely enjoy it. (And now it's time for me to go buy my own copy)
Rating: Summary: A good read for the train Review: I've always like Mary Higgins Clarks books. This one in no exception.
