Rating: Summary: EASILY THE WORST BOOK I HAVE EVER READ Review: Everyone seems to think that Maya Angelou is a great author. In my opinion, there has never been a worse book written. Even the style of writing put me to sleep. If I were reading a good story, written in her style, I wouldn't enjoy it. Usually I only use these reviews to say how good many books are, but I felt that this one was bad enough to warrant warning the world about what an awful piece of literature it is.
Rating: Summary: Extraordinary Review: This book is...What can I say? Extraordinary in the naked honesty she uses. When I read it, I lost myself in the story, I knew exactly what she was talking about. And due to that book, I know why the caged bird sings now. It is a marvelous book that I highly recommend to everyone. It shows you a survivor, a real survivor who despite her difficult background, could still rise up to become respected and reknowned in the literary world.
Rating: Summary: Something for everyone!!!! Review: I was given the idea to read this book for part of my coursework at college.I really enjoyed the way Maya and Baliey had a great relationship and didn't have to talk to each other to communicate with each other. Maya grew up quick when she moved to live with her mother in a rape situation with her mothers boyfreind. She also had the incident with her father in which she had to drive the car home after her father had had a drinking binge. The book was really enjoyable and shows how female characters can just be as strong as any males!!!!
Rating: Summary: i love this book Review: I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings was assigned to me for a summer reading assignment. I was forced to read it, but i can't beleive now that i would actually think it would be bad. It taught me so much about life in general, I love this book and it is for anyone and everyone who wants something to read, that is fun. I have read it three more times since June, and it's only August.
Rating: Summary: Maya deserves a Nobel Prize for Literature Review: This was not the first book by Maya Angelou that I read and it is not my favourite but it is extraordinary! I have to confess that I have only become aware of Maya Angelou through Oprah Winfrey's talk show/book club. I had remembered seeing Maya interviewed on Oprah several years ago and am embarrassed (now) to say that I didn't watch the interview because I found she talked so slow. I cannot believe my own ignorance!!! When I read The Heart of a Woman because it was part of Oprah's book club I could not put it down and was immediately uplifted and mesmerized not only by Maya's 'life story' but also her writing style. I immediately went out to buy all of the other 4 books that comprise her memoir. Because I started with The Heart of a Woman I proceeded to Gather Together in My Name (my favorite). I Know why the Caged Bird Sings was the third book that I read and I can see why when it was published it created such a stir. Wow. I recommend this book to anyone and I hope that you will be as uplifted as I was by this incredible woman.
Rating: Summary: Eloquent Piece of Work! Review: I am in my 2nd year of college and I read this book my 1st year for a research paper. For the next month and a half, Angelou was my life. I spent much of my time in the library reading this book and depicting myself in Stamps. I sniffled silently as the tears rolled down my face when she was raped. Maya Angelou is also a comical writer, saying subtle phrases that make you chuckle. All in all, this is a riveting tale of her struggles in society and her private life.
Rating: Summary: Wow. I love this woman. Review: Maya Angelou is one of the best authors I have ever read. I read this book when I was ten, and again this year at age 17. Her life story is more fascinating than most fictional books I've read, and it just gets more complex in her next book, "Gather Together in My Name" (which I'd also highly recommend). Her poetic use of language, interesting storytelling, and scattered insights into life are all amazing. I love this book, and as an avid reader, I would say that this is truly one of the best books I've ever read.
Rating: Summary: The struggles of a young girl and how she overcame them. Review: A quick review by Michelle A. Bejar.......I first read this book in my English class in the University I am currently attending. It became one of my favorites, that I will have in my own library of books. I know why the caged bird sings, is the biography about Maya Angelou herself, a book that helps understand the struggles of a little girl and her brother Bailey. They both had a hard life, living between Arkansas and California, but both overcame those issues in such a young age. Both children in their young age were not living with their parents due to the divorce, but rather were staying with their grandmother in Arkansas. The grandmother took on the father and mother figure for them, they later had begun to call her Mama too. After moving with their grandmother, the children were facing racial discrimination against them. I think that we can all learn from these issues to make life itself easier. Some readers might not realize this, but I feel that this book teaches us the hard facts about racial issues in life. In Maya's life racism was not the only issue she had to deal with. Once she moved back with her mother, she was raped by her mothers boyfriend at a young age. This is another way she shows the reader how she dealt with hard situations in her young life. I personally recommend this book to adolescent readers, it deals with issues that need to be learned at a young age. I feel that the book will help the majority of the readers to cross giant walls of cultures, race and people. It will help us to learn how to treat and learn about others who might not be the same way as we are. At the end, I think that it will strengthen the race relations between people for the better. In conclusion I would like to add that this book can be funny at time, but also heart breaking at other times. It is the genuine story of a girl, where at times we can relate too.
Rating: Summary: Marvelous Review: Ms. Angelou's series of memoirs is a masterpiece of the human experience. Beautifully written, her books are prose but read like poetry. Her story is at once painfully individual and universal. Angelou speaks to the woman in me, to the immigrant in me, to the human being, but I believe her writing would echo inside everyone. The frankness with which portrays her often troubled, but how amazingly rich in experience existence, is what makes me admire this beautiful, brilliant, strong woman.
Rating: Summary: A HARD REALITY STORY!!! Review: I KNOW WHY THE BIRD SINGS IS AN INDEPTH BOOK ABOUT MAYA'S LIFE AT A YOUNG AGE AND THE BAD DECISIONS SHE MADE. THIS BOOK WILL HAVE YOU FEELING LIKE YOU ARE WITH MAYA THROUGH THESE HARD TIMES. YOU FEEL HER PAIN AND ANGUISH AND REALIZE ANYONE CAN MAKE IT NO MATTER WHAT OBSTACLES LIFE HAS THROWN IN YOUR WAY.
