Rating: Summary: An Inspiring Story Review: This book put us (a high school book group) in the shoes of a young african-american girl growing up in the south during the depression. Our group of five people only marginally enjoyed the book. This autobiography contained adventure, and sadness. An example is when Maya had to live in a junkyard for a month and survive. We couldn't relate to the time peiod or southern living, but the book still appealed to each of us in our own way. Mrs. Angelou did a great job making the characters come alive and become the people that they are. We sympathized for Maya because of her tragic childhood. These misfourtunes in her life made her a wonderful writer, and an interesting person. The book was a page turner because all the group members couldn't wait to see what happened next. It was a real history lesson about things that we will hopefully never experience. For example, racism, murder, rape, leaving home, and growing up. For one member of this group reading this book made him depressed, because the entire book had a gloomy undertone. We all agreed the ending came suddenly and left something to be desired.
Rating: Summary: A sad story that ends good! Review: This Book was very good, Maya had an interesting life. Well to bad it wasn't all. The think about it is why does it have to have embrassing parts making you think all white people will do something like that!
Rating: Summary: Great reading, eye opening and touching. Review: Maya writes with true honesty. It is very easy to relate to her feelings and emotions. The use of her words and real life experiences are surprising and unexpected. I suggest reading all of her autobiographies. It is really an eye opening experience. The honesty in her work is what makes her reading so interesting. She tells it how it was and like it is. The use of her words to send across her message is quite phenomonal. So is she.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic !!! Review: This book was amazing! It makes you feel great inside and her emotional stories warm your heart up. In the book Ms. Angelou tells us about some of the most horriffying and emotional times in her life. I usually son't enjoy autobiographies but this one was great.
Rating: Summary: This book is valuable educationally. Review: I feel that this book is a great educational tool for high school students. It shows another aspect of life that most students know nothing about and could help students to understand an experience unlike their own. I feel Angelou is a strong woman to face her pains so publically by writing this book.
Rating: Summary: Bet You had to Read this for School Review: The frank narrative makes this book more interesting, but it didn't leave me caring that much. I respected Maya Angelou because of her extremely difficult life, but that didn't mean I wanted to hear about it.
Rating: Summary: Her experience w/ poetry make her books "beautiful" to read. Review: Having read lots of the classics, especially Dickens, it was a real pleasure to experience the special "flow" of words in this first book by Maya I have read. Being a musician, I was pleased with the "rhythms" also. I bought 3 other books by her and look forward to reading them also.
Rating: Summary: Had to read it for school, good overall Review: In my county there has been talk of banning this book, and it actually was last year. This year, however, they put it back in the curriculum. I wasn't overly crazy about the book, but I have to say Mrs. Angelou is a wonderful writer. I agree with the themes in this book, and share Maya's ideals, but the book didn't really catch my interest. It's not like I don't like to read or anything (cause I love to) but for some reason it didn't enthral me. Its probably more of a womans book. l also find it a funny choice for a bunch of white, upper middle class suburbian teens to have read, and then act suprised when they hate the book. I also find no reason to ban the book. The rape scene wasn't at all handled bad. Also, the whole book has a rather sour taste to it now after having to take a million pages of notes on it.
Rating: Summary: she is one of a kind... i wish i knew her as a friend... Review: i was asenior in high-scchool when some one gave me this book... i read it for all that it was worth, and came out a much more rounded human being. you can't help but fall in love with this awkward girl... because no matter what race, we have all been in situations that we can't comprehend why... but as we grow older we are expected to look beyond that question...still not knowing why. hopefully this story can help fill in that gap .
