Summary: Why are the reviews of this book so bipolar?
Review: In perusing the comments made by others about this book, I was reminded of "The Jungle" by Upton Sinclair, so I looked at those reviews. Both sets of readers found these books to be very graphic, have poor endings, have a suffering main character, and questionable writing styles. Yet, "Caged Bird" readers either absolutely loved the book or hated the paper it was printed on, while "The Jungle" received milder reactions. I cannot figure out why this is; therefore, I ask the question: Are the stronger reactions for "Caged Bird" in either direction a direct function of Maya Angelou's race?

Summary: This is an inspiring book
Review: Ok to all those people who said this book was just crap think again this is a marvelous book for people who like to read and she is not talking about racisim she is talking about her childhood and how it influenced her to write books and poems she has out now She (Marguerite aka Maya)is a beautiful and courageous woman She was molested or (raped) by her father and she didnt say a thing for two years cause she thought that she had something to do with the death of her father but she is not racist Maya Angelou is my role model and she is a great one at that so people read the book over and get more deep in to it The reason you said it was boring was because you probably wasnt reading it Please give her credit though

--Much Love--

Summary: This book is beneficial to black, white, old, or young.
Review: I picked up this book and then couldn't put it down! No wonder they make so many kids in school read this book...it is enlightening and humorous, but serious. You find yourself comparing your life experiences to hers, and no matter who you are, you can relate! Easy to read, but not TOO easy. I'm going to order the second one!

Summary: A book with no point
Review: This book to me a waste of time. It had no significant ending. Why is having the baby a happy ending to this book. In my point of views it just made her life go downhill. And how is ruuning away to the junkyard a good idea. If I were to do that I would be dead. Maya does a good job writing this book but there is no point. She tries to get acroos themes but it fails. She grew up in tough times with much racism. She only sees whie hating blacks. She fails to see that she has a racist point of view of whites. Some details in the scene from St. Louis did not needed to be added. I don't think this is an appropriate book for kids to be forced to read. Kids can't watch some P.G. 13 movies in school. I consider this writing to be rated P.G. 16. My main problem is the book has no ending or point.

Summary: Was well written, mature audience
Review: This book is very well written. The author describes what her life was like during the time period in great detail. The way the author describes the events going on in her life at that time is very descriptive and accurate. This book jumps between present and past tense very often. The author presents some pretty drastic stuff in this book. When reading this book, I found it to be very informative of what life was like for blacks during the time period of the 1930's and 1940's. This book really gives a different perspective on what life was like. It also really touches your heart. Overall I would recommend this book. There are a few rought parts in the book, but overall the book is well written and has a good story line.

Summary: An absolutely abysmal piece of trash.
Review: This is one of the most over rated "books" of modern times. It deserves no more than to have the pages ripped out and put in the bottom of a hamster cage. It has no real plot and no literary value. It is the written equivalent of the "art" exhibit "Sensations." It was written for one reason and one reason only, to shock. Were it written by anyone but a black woman it would not been published, must less sold even one copy.

Summary: Truely a great book on her life.
Review: I remember reading this book when I was 10 on my own, and have never forgot it. I felt so many emotions while reading the: from sorrow to joy, from horror to surprise. It really and truely is a great book. It is understandable that a number of students will find it boring. Any book can seem boring when it is being read for homework. This book may also seem to jump around, and have no plot to some people; but it is about her life. It is non-fiction. It let's people see what went on while she was growing up. A vivid collecton of her memories. I highley recommend the book for anyone over 14. Younger than that, you need to have a high school level of reading comprehesion.

Summary: Bore Me
Review: Please tell me what happened. This bok stank. Do not read this book unless you have to for school because I almost fell asleep reading because I had too. Also, there is too much un needed info in there. For the sake of your sanity, skip this book and keep your money. I wish I could have given this book a rating of 0 stars but Amazon.com wouldn't let me.r

Summary: ITS A SAD AND REALLY GOOD AUTOBIOGRAPHY
Review: I REALLY LIKED IT AND WOULD RECOMMEND IT TO ANYBODY THAT ENJOYS A GOOD BOOK.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: This is an eye opening book!
Review: I was surprised after reading this book at how much i enjoyed it. This autobiography on Maya's life really opened up emotions and memories of growing up. The way she described things in her book, were absolutely amazing. I really felt a closeness with Maya and an understanding with her after reading this book. I think it showed me how even people with very different backgrounds have so many things in common, that we all can relate to something that happened to her in her childhood. I think that anyone who did not like this book, is probably someone who is really young in common sense. Even though i am still only a college student, i think i can appreciate the way that Maya can look back at her past question why things happened, and also what should be learned from it. Anyone who is young at common sense would not understand the book because they do not know what it means to grow as a person after realizing how our past has made us who we are.
