Summary: Self-aggrandizing, irrelevant
Review: The real shame in "Faith of My Fathers" is that McCain was involved at all; Salter's efforts clearly demonstrate the ghostwriter's skill, whereas J.M. has merely phoned in his oft-championed 'trials and tribulations.' It's flat, for one, and so overtly self-congratulatory that one cannot help but think that McCain might as well taken the little time he spent on this and just petitioned to have his face carved on Mt. Rushmore. A waste of time.

Summary: A book that shows the true character of a candidate
Review: At last, a new dynastry of which Ameriacans can truly be proud. John McCain tells the story of his father and grandfather during their years at sea as they came four star admirals. He also recounts his own experience as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. His history and experiences are told in a manner in which the reader gains a new perspective in what "public service" means to this unique American. Faith of My Fathers belongs on the same shelf as Profiles in Courage.

Summary: AN OUTSTANDING BOOK !
Review: This wonderful book is filled with incredibly inspiring stories of courage and hope written flawlessly by a true American hero, Senator John McCain. The hardships that he fought with such grace and ease should be a great lesson to all that there is indeed true honor and valor still left in America today. This book should be required reading in our national schools to demonstrate the true qualities of honesty, integrity, and character that will be necessary to keep this country great, well into the next century.

Summary: DEEPLY INSPIRING !
Review: Senator McCain's incredibly moving portrayal of his fascinating upbringing and experiences throughout life deeply moved me. The hardships and the pain that he endured throughout his captivity created a man of complete integrity and loyalty who shares with us some of life's most important lessons. I cherish this book and what it taught me about morality and the importance of honesty. I would love to have Senator McCain become our next President, he is the answer to what this country needs, and after you finish this book you will understand why.

Summary: A superb tale about honor, duty and love of country.
Review: This is an extraordinary work about the meaning of duty, honor, and love of country. It is a treat to read a book by a Presidential candidate that is devoid of politics in every respect.

The auhtors'attention to detail and family history, a well as John McCain's family history make the book a joy to read. The griping tale of John McCain's over five years in a North Vietnamese prison provide excellent lessons on the meaning of fortitude, courage, friendship, and perseverance. An exciting read that makes one proud to be an American.

The authors'rich writing brings the McCains to life and leaves the reader yearning for more. This is a compelling book that is bound to become a classic.

Summary: the genuine article
Review: This book should be required reading for every American. Its affirmation of faith, family, honor and country -- even in the face of truly horrific experiences -- is an inspiration.

What most impresses is McCain's total lack of rancor torward his captors. Their actions would have earned the eternal wrath of lesser men, including myself. In an era littered with ersatz heros and false icons, McCain is the genuine article.

Summary: A must-read book for all Americans
Review: I laughed and cried and was so inspired by this book. Faith of My Fathers is the story of a family who has given so much to America. Three generations of McCain men honorably served their country in the United States Navy. The McCain's witnessed much of the important military events of the last half century. From the surrender of Japan in WWII, to submarine cat-and-mouse-games that are so vivid that you can smell the fear and courage, to John McCain's tough yet inspiring experiences with torture as a POW in North Vietnam.

This is a book about family, honor, and love of one's country. It is the first book I've ever read by a presidential hopeful that never even mentions politics. It is an extraordinary book and one of the best stories I've ever read. --Paul Hickman

Summary: Interesting, if a bit abbreviated
Review: Faith of My Fathers is John McCain's memoir of his service in the Vietnam war, with an extended prologue in which he introduces you to his father and grandfather, their deeds, and what these acts mean to him. It's interesting, but the memoir half of the book isn't that long and so it's somewhat less satisfying than it could be.

McCain's grandfather and father were both admirals (the first father and son to both reach four star rank in the Navy's history). McCain the elder commanded aircraft carriers during WW2, under Admiral Halsey. Halsey is quoted as saying that McCain was "not much more than my right arm." McCain served during the last year of the war in command of Halsey's carriers or a large portion of them, and did so ably.

The second McCain was a submarine commander during the same conflict, and was Commander in Chief of the Pacific during the Viet Nam War. He held this latter position when his son, the author of the book, was shot down over North Viet Nam and captured by the Vietnamese. Both father and grandfather appear to have been loyal, skilfull sailors who fought hard and lived harder, something that McCain apparently has done also.

The faith of the title is less religious than it sounds, though the author makes it clear that he's Christian. Instead, the faith turns out to be an abiding attachment to the core values that officers in the armed services once held: being honorable, faithful to the flag and the uniform, loyal to their country, and of course conventionally rowdy (drinking and gambling too much, chiefly) but never anything that would raise anyone's eyebrows, really. There is a strong religious element to it, but it's not overwhelming.

I enjoyed this book. McCain is an interesting and at times infuriating Republican, but he's also very up front abou what he considers his core beliefs and how he tries to hold on to them. The best parts of the book are the passages where he tells of the Vietnamese attempts to torture him and other prisoners into confessing to war crimes. He makes it clear that the war criminals weren't the captives. I would recommend this book, especially for those who wish to learn more about John McCain.
