Rating: Summary: Creative and interesting story Review: The author's imagination runs wild in this fantastic story about a little boy and his insect friends. In typical Dahlian fashion, the child wins over the mean and nasty adults. The insect world inside a peach is truly fascinating.
Rating: Summary: My Son Loved It! Review: There is nothing more fulfilling than watching your toddler completely engaged at storytime. With every turn of the page he would announce the title headers "James and the Giant Peach" and "James and the Giant Peach", read me chapter numbers and page numbers as well. He's only four, but he really enjoyed the story about James and his adventures with the Old Green Grasshopper, Earthworm, Ladybug, Spider and especially the Centipede with his corny songs. As an adult I like Roald Dahl because he writes with a little EDGE, he doesn't put a sugar-coating on the world and its flaws. We'll be reading another one of his books soon. Now we are going to watch the movie.

Rating: Summary: Loved it as a kid Review: James Henry Trotter, the loneliest boy in the world, escapes from his sad life when he encounters a giant peach inhabited by magically transformed insects. Together, they set off on a journey across the Atlantic Ocean. I remember being enchanted by this story as a child. Upon rereading it recently, however, it struck me as a somewhat cold exercise in storytelling for children. The only character that really shows any personality is the nasty Centipede, and all of them seem to be rather class-conscious--even the saintly Ladybug, who looks down on ladybugs with two dots as being ill-mannered. This is, however, still a book that I would read to my own children. My changed opinion of it probably has more to do with the evolution of my tastes as a reader than it does with the merits of the book itself.
Rating: Summary: a childhood favorite! Review: Roald Dahl displays more of his magic that everyone has seen in "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" in "James and the Giant Peach." Poor orphaned James Henry Trotter lives with his mean Aunt Sponge and Aunt Spiker who make him do all sorts of awful chores and treat him like a slave. The boy's situation is straight out of a Charles Dickens' novel. Then one day, the tree in their backyard grows an enormous peach -- and with this odd fruit, James makes his escape and finds friends in the form of ... GIANT BUGS! What's highly amusing is how all the bugs (and even the nasty aunts) all make up songs about their lives and/or each other. Dahl demonstrates a wonderful wit as he makes up the rhymes. This is a cute quick read for people of all ages!
