Summary: If you are a Rush Fan read THIS
Review: This is the inspiration for one of the greatest songs I have ever heard!! It is 2112, written by Neil Peart. He is not only veiwed as one of the worlds greatest drummer, but he is good with the english language too. If you know of Peart, read his book, "The Masked Rider," which is a fictionalzed version of his bike ride accross Africa. If you want to know about Neilon a perfessional level associated with his impecable drumming skills, check out his Limited Edition/Series videos "A Work in Progress." If you are too ignorant to try to understand Rand and what she is saying, you obviously don't like her writings. If you don't and are at least interested, try learning about her philosophy, then think about what is being said in Anthem, and you will understand what she really means.

Summary: Anthem was okay. It wasn't good, but I read it.
Review: Rand definitely has an "ego problem." Why was ego such a special word? The book was pretty good - not a strong plot(at all), but readable - up to that point. Then she went on and on about ego! Where's the plot in that? Anthem is on our Required Reading List for high school, but I absolutely cannot understand why. I would rather read 1984 or The Giver any day.

Summary: Plato's "Republic" seen from the inside
Review: It is a book containing some quite controversial ideas, and so it is easy to judge it more by one's degree of agreement with said ideas than by the actual merits of the book itself. Which is a shame, since the book in itself is actually a rather interesting piece of work. Set in a world which bears an uncanny number of resemblances to the state in the "Republic", the hero of the book is in search of something he feels strongly is missing, but which he cannot put his finger on. This something is at the end of the book found in a word, "I".

The book is recommendable not so much because of its realism - for the book does not seem intended to be in a realist tradition - but for its ability to isolate the problem of personal identity in a story believable enough to get away with it. So no matter what one's opinion on Rand's opinions: The book offers a thought experiment around the theme of "personal identity in relation to the collective" that! would be of benefit to the reader to partake in.

Summary: Why does so many misunderstand
Review: I read the reviews, and no this is not the best book I have ever read, but it is a good book. I will never understand how people will tear apart a book just because they do not agree with the philosophy behind it. And by comparing Anthem to 1984 it is obvious that these people are missing the point. The ideals of objectivism does not promote a cult like group, rather it would produce a large group of individual. I

Summary: One of the greatest books ever!!
Review: It shows the story of breaking the chains of a communist society. I am upset that this is not a longer book. This should be manditory reading for everyone. The "WE" is over come to show that individuality is the root of all society.

Summary: It's given me a fire inside that I cannot put out..
Review: I have read over many reviews for this book and I have to honestly say that I can agree with many of opinions that have been passed along on the Web...both good and bad. I was required to read Anthem four years ago when I was in high school, and even then, it didn't get many rave reviews from my classmates. But what impressed me so much wasn't my initial reaction upon reading this short novel, but the lasting impression it has had upon me since. This impression has left a warming fire in me that cannot be extinquished. And this feeling has lead me to read the book twice since and write three indepth papers on it. Each time I've read it (since my first time), whether it be for recreation or research, I have been able to understand the book more fully and the whole idea of my individual self has been more strongly enhanced. Since early childhood, I have been an avid book reader. And, as I am sure you all know, each book captures you in a different way. But there have been very few books that I can say afterwords actually left a piece inside of me. Anthem did this in a very strong way. Ayn Rand may not be the best writer in that she can capture everyone who happens to come across a few words that have escaped her head, but her writings have captured a piece of my heart, since giving me an understanding of a small portion of her philosophy. This feeling in me is open enough to keep working on, what is to become someday, my own philosophy. And, in my eyes, any writer that can influence one person alone, not to mention the millions already captured, in this way is as awesome as you can come by.

Summary: EGO in a time of teen suicide is a bad thing?
Review: Okay, so political extremism from both ends aside; doesn't this say YOU have value in this world, regardless of the WE pressures of adolescence? Regarding social structure, the book offers a wonderful starting point for further discussion.

Summary: This book owes me stars! (It's not even worth one.)
Review: I agree with Mr. Topp.

In _Anthem_ Rand preaches selfishness and disregard of others. For her efforts she has been rewarded with a following that calls her a "visionary" when she is obviously doing nothing more than following the current trend in America to bash communism, socialism and any political theory that does not promote capitalism and competition.

In this novel Rand presents a Utopian society as fundamentally evil because it suppresses technology. What Rand forgets is that a society's worth should NOT be judged solely on its technological advances. If so, what would life be? A game to collect the best and most numerous quantity of robots?

_Anthem_ is weak philosophically and written with mediocre literary finesse. I am still regretting having wasted my money on it. But it's your choice... I hope the book store will let me return it. I think I'll buy some Faulkner.

Summary: This was really bad...
Review: Always say something positive first...hmm...let's see...well, it was short. Really short, 105 pages. Other then that, I hated it. It had no plot, no story, no characters. the main character was totally uneduring, flat as a board. She can't write at all. Anyone wanting to read this should try 1984, a true masterpiece, or The Giver, along the same lines and nice as well.
