Rating: Summary: Mystery at its best Review: I loved this book; highly recommend for mystery readers who also enjoy some humor thrown in. If you've read the Mrs. Pollifax mysteries, I think you'd enjoy this. I'm a huge fan of Mrs. Pollifax but enjoyed this even more. I apologize if this is inappropriate but I'd love to read the rest of this series, in the order they were written, but can't find an accurate chronological listing. Would any reviewer be willing to list them?
Rating: Summary: Great Book! Review: Elizabeth Peters Crocodile on the Sandbank is a good selection for action, adventure, suspense, and just plain out a good mystery title.
Rating: Summary: Great book, fabulous story, wonderous adventure!!! Review: This is a great book and it deals with egypt! When I read this book it reminded me of the movie THE MUMMY (1999)!!! It has many surprises and action that you won't want to put it down for one moment!!!!! I recommend it and like to thank Mrs. Peters for sharing a wonderful adventure with the readers(others and myself) and it is a series! I've read another of her books, the sequel to this book and it was alright,(I give it 3 stars)but this one is way better and it compels you in a way that you will enjoy!!!!!!! So read it why don't you?!!!!! Why are you still here?! Go purchase it through Amazon.com and read it before you forget or has the Mummy from this story impaled you already??!!! AHHHHHH!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable archaeology Review: This is the first in a series of entertaining suspense novels about a feminist-archaeologist adventuring through Egypt in the dawn of modern Egyptology, at the end of the nineteenth century during the transition from amateur collectors of looted objects to the professional investigation of ruins in their original context. The stories are crisply written by an expert on Egyptology (as well as an accomplished author of many romance-suspense novels under other pseudonyms). Protagonists Emerson and Amelia incorporate as their own the original scientific advances of Sir Flinders Petrie who first developed a chronology of everyday pottery (written dates are never found on everything one might wish to date, whereas potsherds are pretty much ubiquitous). Effervescent Amelia can be tiresomely obstreperous, very prickly concerning her opinionated independence, but the fascination of authentic locale and plot win out. Only if you believe in curses, ghosts, and zombies could this story scare you, and lead you to miss the villain. This story is also marred slightly by that cliche of romance novels, the WILLFUL ignorance ("misunderstanding") of the heroine's own feelings (arrrgh!), blind to the two faces of a single overwhelming emotion: hate and love. This should not be the case for an enlightened heroine, unless feminism systematically represses emotion in favour of intellectual competition? These Amelia Peabody confections really should be read in chronological order, as they are of a "biographical" nature (but the publisher shamefully fails to provide any hint of their sequence).
Rating: Summary: Amelia and Emerson are unforgettable ! Review: I discovered Elizabeth Peter's Amelia Peabody a year ago. Thank you Ms. Peters for hours and hours of wonderful reading. Romantic ! Educational! Suspenful! I have read Crocodile on the Sandbank many times over.
Rating: Summary: Interesting setting but predictable plot. Review: The Peabody character is indeed interesting and the romantic overtones are fun, however the same things keep happening over and over again. And yes it is a trifle to easy to predict the end. I will not as the other reviewers have, read it again.
Rating: Summary: Such language; Such vocabulary; Such FUN. Review: "Good God, A woman with an inquiring mind? Is it possible?" Little did Emerson know he had met his match. A truly fast, fun and intelligent read. Amelia is a "pip" and Emerson is completely enthralled.
Rating: Summary: Adventure, romance, and excitement, all in one! Review: After reading the first chapter, I was hooked! Amelia Peabody and her sidekicks create a wonderful story line. Amelia's attitude, strength, and determination give this book a well-rounded leading lady. The adventures and experiences she encounters in this book are pure enjoyment. I was just looking for something to read in the car, and I found a delightful new series.
Rating: Summary: This book was exceptional. Review: This book had me hooked after I read the first page. It kept getting better and better! You can count on Elizabeth Peters to really write a great mystery that coaxes you to read the other nine books in the series.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful =o) Review: I started this series a year ago and have recently completed The Falcon at the Portal. This book opened a new world for me, it is a new experence with every book. EXCELENT MS.PETERS!!!
