Rating: Summary: There's more to the story! Review: I was fascinated by this story. Jon Krakauer wrote a vey interesting tale. When I discussed this book with someone else, she told me that I HAD to read The Climb (written by Anatoli Boukreev and G. Weston DeWalt). This book is co-written by the Russian guide who was on the mountain working as a guide in Scott Fischer's group. Mr. Krakauer leads the reader to believe that Boukreev left the group to save himself, only to later emerge and singlehandedly save a number of people. Even though, Into Thin Air, is fascinating there are a number of FACTS that Mr. Krakauer leaves out (that have been substantiated by other people on the mountain and in Mountain Madness) that tell the whole story. Anatoli Boukreev is a true hero and it infuriates me that he isn't portrayed that way. If you liked Into Thin Air (don't get me wrong it was a great book) please read The Climb to get a complete picture of what happened.
Rating: Summary: AMAZING! It was phat! Review: This book, Into Thin Air is one teriffic book!! i LOVED IT AND IT WAS So filled with suspense and stuff like that. And it was fat. I t was phat! Go for it and read it!
Rating: Summary: haunting Review: A fascinating account of ourselves. I was haunted by this book, and wondered what I would have done. I thought Jon Krakauer showed guts in telling his version of the story, knowing that many readers may condemn some of his actions or lack there of. I felt like I knew the members of Rob Hall's team and I climbed that mountain with them. I enjoyed this book, it was a good adventure but mostly it defined what it means to be human.
Rating: Summary: WELL WRITTEN, VERY UNDERSTANDABLE, FAIR Review: This is one of the best all around adventure books I have read. Jon Krakauer is an excellent writer in many ways. He explains equipment and technique that is strange to the reader in very clear terms without being tedious at all. In my estimation he was fair and sympathetic to his fellow climbers and the guides. He makes the reader feel the difficulties and the reasons for being there.
Rating: Summary: A terrific story that touches you in a very emotional way. Review: My husband and I both could not put this book down once we started. We felt we were on the mountain with that climbing group. It was a beautiful story but very disturbing. Being on Mt. Everest seems to be everyman for himself in the end.
Rating: Summary: Chillingly real Review: Gives you the Everest you never knew. The writing is so excellent, you feel as though you were there. Incredible book.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Review: This story is an absolute page-turner. I couldn't put it down. I gave it to my husband to read and he couldn't put it down either. Even though its fact, it reads like fiction. It left me with an excellent overview of mountain climbing. The IMAX movie "Mount Everest", which was based on the same climb, did not come close to describing the experience.
Rating: Summary: "Sheer Heartpounding Excitement" Review: This book, is excellant, and a tough one to put down. It's perfect in almost every way. If there's one book that you pick to read this summer, make it this one!!
Rating: Summary: Factual, haunting account of hubris and disaster on Everest Review: I completely agree with reviewers who say this book lived on with them long after they finished it. Perhaps the timeless and pitiless majesty of the setting has a part in it but so does the courage and humanity of those involved, most particularly that of the experts and the guides. As an exercise in hubris, the 1996 expeditions to Everest can scarcely be matched. That said, the punishment meted out is of an exquisite cruelty. Any lingering desire I might have had to climb any really high mountain, let alone Everest, is safely and permanently extinguished. The author's spare style allows this astonishing story to speak for itself - it needs no embellishment and gets none. Indeed, the author is almost crushed by his own tale. A must for all those who relish Greek tragedy - it is all here and written in English as crisp as the environment in which it is set.
Rating: Summary: A must read for outdoor enthusiasts Review: A first hand account of an ascent on Everest, this book was crisply written and riveting in its' details. Each person that decides to climb this mountain knows the risk he/she is taking. One man can not save an entire expedition and the tragedy of this expedition is no exception. Numerous persons have died attempting this life long goal but few have documented their thoughts as well as Jon.
