Summary: A well-written, vivid look at a very serious topic.
Review: Into Thin Air takes an up-front look at the perils one faces by climbing Everest. Author Jon Krakauer, a frequent contributor to renowned magazines such as Outside, Rolling Stone and yes, Playboy, was only taking the journey up the mountain for an article, but it turned out to be one of the saddest, and unforgettable times of his life. Just as he got to know his companions, the storm took nearly all of them.

This book is so well written -- I can't believe Krakauer has such vivid memories of it all. You don't need to be a wilderness buff to enjoy this book, I would recommend it to just about anybody who enjoys good literature. Into Thin Air also taught me a very important lesson -- I'm never going to climb Mount Everest.

Summary: Gripping and Addicting
Review: Krakauer tells a true to life tale of the 1996 Mt Everest disaster. The story is almost too gripping to be real. Krakauer writes with a scary authenticity that makes you unaware of his presense in the book as writer. The book THE CLIMB is a good read that tells another's side of the Everest accident, but Krakauer's is by far the best.

Summary: Oh my god! I stayed up until 2 a.m. to finish this book.
Review: And I get up at six. You would think that knowing the ending would spoil the reading experience. But it wasn't true in this case. I couldn't read fast enough to find out HOW each climber fared.

Summary: AWESOME!
Review: This is one amazing ride. You feel as if you were there. You will laugh and you will cry. You will feel the pain Krakauer has to live with every day. It makes you feel like a fool for thinking your life is too hard or too stressed. Bravo, Krakauer. Bravo.

Summary: Read The Climb too, co authored by Anatoli Boukreev
Review: When I first read Krak's article in Outside, my wife and I were totally engrossed with all of the tragic events. I kept my eye out for his book and bought it while living in Hawaii.

I thought the book was well written and I didn't put it down. After I finished I needed to know more. Then I heard that Anatoli Boukreev came out with his own version of the Everest tragedy. Krakauer had severely criticised Boukreev for failing to be a good guide. So I was eager to read Boukreev's account.

Well, I just finished The Climb, and firmly believe Krakauer made some mistakes in his book about Boukreev. And apparently Krakauer knew that his accusations of Boukreev might be untrue. According to Boukreev's account and several Mountain Madness personnel, Krakauer was informed of Anatoli's official statement about the events, but he still printed his own version which blasted boukreev for racing down the mountain, dressing lightly, ascending without O's, etc. After the tragedy, and the Outside article Krakauer wrote, Boukreev responded to the editors of Outside magazine with several letters that contradicted Krakauer's opinions, which in Anatoli's and other people's minds were completely false. This is all described in detail in the final pages of The Climb. The Outside editors refused to print theBoulreev's rebuttal because it was too long for printing.

So after reading both, I would question the authenticity of Krakauer's opinions. Read The Climb, too.

I felt as if I was one of the scientists/climbers, seeking the impossible. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves to read, this is for you Sarah.

Summary: Haunting.
Review: This book is entertaining in the beginning where we follow the happy group of individuals up to the base camps of Everest. But, soon the book becomes haunting and mesmorizing as we get drawn into the situation where people are dying.
