Rating: Summary: Wow... what a book! Review: "Into Thin Air" is one of the best books I have read in some time. Jon Krakauer's book was moving, suspenseful and full of twists and turns that marks a great author. The unfortunate experience he had on Everest in 1996 was conveyed to the reader almost as if you were sitting over his shoulder. He gets you involved in a big way; its like you are there with him as he climbs in the stinging, thin air of the apex of the world. It's hard to read this book without being emotional. Most climbing books convey the romance of reaching the peak of a mountain. But Jon's book conveys the pure hell that climbing the world's tallest peak offers. He explains in great detail how he got to the mountain. In fact, for the first third of the book, he isn't even on the mountain (except Chapter 1). He explains how to get from Kathmandu to Base camp, something that most authors don't explain. This part of the book can be kind of monotonous, but he never really looses the reader. Then he describes in great detail the practices of climbing the mountain. I don't want to give the story away, but once again, he makes it seem as if you there with him, fearing a fall into a massive crevasse or a fall from a 4,000-foot ledge. My recommendation to you is basically to get this book and read it. There has never been a book that has captivated me as much as "Into Thin Air" has. To Jon - If you read this, you did an awesome job on your book. My prayers are to you, your family, Rob, Scott, Doug, Andy, Yasuko, Ngawang, Chen, Bruce, Lopsang, and everybody on Everest in 1996. Nobody should ever experience what you did so high on the apex of the world.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding, a great account of th 1996 Mt. Everest Disaster Review: I absolutly loved the book. It kept me at the edge of my seat, as I am a 15 year old highschool student that is an incredible feat. Jon Krakauer's description of the storms and personal anguish each climber endured was astounding. This is a great story of courage and the never ending will to survive.
Rating: Summary: Home Sweet Home Review: Krakauer makes one dread the thought of climbing Mount Everest. A very interesting book that can be followed up with internet research to confirm or discredit the author. Krakauer's arrogance makes the book that much more interesting.
Rating: Summary: excelente Review: this book is awsome, all that horor that people went throw i feel sorro
Rating: Summary: A must read book Review: This book tops all of Jon Krakauer's books. This book tells about Jon Krakauer's ascent from Nepal to the summit and all the way back down. This book gives intense detail about the climb of Mt. Everest. If you haven't read this book I suggest you should read it. The pictures are great!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: The Best Book in the history of personal accounts ! Review: Into thin air is the most comprehensive, intresting and fascinating book i have ever read. I am currently in high school, and I found myself reading it through every class !
Rating: Summary: The best book I have ever read. Review: Into Thin Air, by Jon Krakauer is a remarkable look at the hardships of mountain climbers, specifically those who climbed Mount Everest in May, 1996. This book's concentration on emotion rather than action sets it apart from most other books of this kind. Jon Krakauer explains to the reader the foolishness involved in deciding to climg Everest, yet the reader realizes it is just one of those things that has to be done. After reading this book I find myself more aware of the carnage and sacrifice that is Everest, yet I now have this strange longing, despite what I know, to go and to climb. Into Thin Air is an incredible book that MUST BE READ!!!
Rating: Summary: Totally absorbing -- riveting! Review: Few books have ever captivated me the way "Into Thin Air" did. There's not much I can add to the praise of other reviewers except to say that reading it while flying to the Rockies (to ski, not climb) made it even more incredible. No doubt the runaway success of this book is largely to blame for the fact that my wife and I drove two hours to see the IMAX movie "Everest" at the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum, only to be told that it had sold out FOUR HOURS IN ADVANCE. And this from a movie that's been out as long as the book has. We chipped in and bought the video with our friends for the same collective price we would've paid to get into the IMAX version. Bottom line -- read the book! (Unless you're a mountain-climbing fanatic like a friend of mine, who got partway into the book and threw it down in disgust at the irresponsible decisions that were made by many of the doomed climbers of "Into Thin Air.")
Rating: Summary: Amazing!!! Review: What an adventure!!! Proving the point, we are responsible for our own destiny. I found it very hard to set this book down, only to anticipate how soon I could continue. Only those that have been at those altitudes can fathom what it does to ones mind, and the desire for survival.
Rating: Summary: Can't put this down! it is breathtaking and heartfelt. Review: In my opinion Number one: Into Thin Air. Read it before you think of seeing the making of the IMAX film. And of course before you see the IMAX film itself. This is the whole story!! I could not put it down, Jon builds the characters until we know them so well. When they are lost you cry. We feel his heartbreak and the hurt of all involved. If you are a fan or have a fear of extreme sports dont miss this book!! All I can say is WOW!
