Rating: Summary: flawed but has good pace Review: I'll have to say that i read "Into Thin Air" quite a while before i picked up Dewalt's " The Climb" . A cursory look at the online comments for these two books shows that the debate still rages . At the risk of taking sides , I'll have to say that Krakauer's book had better pace and had the vivacious clip of a fiction novel whereas Dewalt's book suffered from being almost academic in it's delivery . But therein , I suppose , lies Messrs Krakauer's shortcoming , ie. a lot of his comments were unsubstantiated and bordered on the fictitious . Having summitted several 7000+ and 8000+ peaks myself , I share Messrs Boukreev's views on the matter . In the final telling , no one can dispute the fact that it was Boukreev who despite his exhaustion , braved the elements to mount a rescue attempt . You can't take that away from him and Krakauer's whimpering complaints will hardly marr the former's very sizeable reputation in the high altitude climbing community . If you're looking for a book that reads like a novel ( with all its attendant factual fallacies ) , be sure to pick up a copy of Krakauer's " Into Thin Air " . You won't be disappointed .
Rating: Summary: Wonderful Review: This book is a great story just to read when ever you can. I am a VERY PICKY reader and I enjoyed this so much that I read it in 1 week!
Rating: Summary: Excellent read! Review: This is a book you can't put down. It's a gripping tale of how fragile life is and how nature can destroy it in a matter of hours. Krakauer gives an excellent first hand account of what went wrong on the roof of the world.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Awesome Awesome!!!! Review: The Book Into Thin Air is a clencher. I have read it twice and loved it both times. I love all the true acounts and the personal stories that Jon Krakauer shares with us. Another this that I like is the fact that he isn't afraid to admit that he was wrong and that he had made mistakes on the mountain. I really think that this book is one to read. If you like a thrilling non-stop aduenture read it. (Plus it is really educational!! just what you like hu?????)
Rating: Summary: Excelent book. Remember to respect Mother Nature/beauty. Review: Excelent book. The first coupe chapters of this book are kinda slow and it takes a while to get into it. But once you get into the book it goes alot smoother. For me the book did not got interesting till tree or four chapters befor the middle(after the introductions of ALL of the expaditions). I like this book for it gives the beauty of the Earth and also gives a shocking realty check for our lives. The turn around time should have been inforced and the Sheapa's that were on rescue effort and passed out in their tent from carbonmonoxide posining should have known that that could happen and not have done it. Some people say that the book is what the author felt and saw. This is true but in a way the book was a way to pay his respects to the peaople that died that day. He was not a guide and did not have to do some of the things that he did but he did. Even though his efforts were fruitless, so were many other adtemts to go out and find survivors. A small reminder that we must respect Mother Nature. When we lose that respect for even an instands Nature will strick back at us to remind us. Show her the respect and admire her beauty. You will be safe and profit from your climes that way.
Rating: Summary: You Must Read This Book Review: I never new. I'll never look at Everest the same. Thank you Jon Krakauer.
Rating: Summary: Edge of your seat reading experience!! Review: A great book!! Extremely thought-provoking. It makes you wonder what possesses individuals to have such a strong desire to climb Everest. I have a new admiration for those adventure-seeking enthusiasts, but as for myself, I'll just stay on level ground at the bottom. Krakauer does an excellent job of telling the heart-wrenching tale. I like his sytle of writing. For the climbing-impaired, he does a great job explaining everything.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely Brilliant. Just don't see the movie. Review: This book is amazing. The drama, power, and excitement of Everest are wonderfully crafted onto each page. Krakauer draws you in and never lets go. Don't listen to those who say it is a waste of money. This book is worth more than you could ever spend on it. Do yourself a favor and read his other books, Eiger Dreams, and Into the Wild.
Rating: Summary: Like "Into the Wild," "Into Thin Air" was way too long. Review: As I was reading each, I couldn't help but think I was reading an elongated version of his "Outside" magazine articles, painfully stretched out into a book version. Both books he claims he "had to write" -- "Into the Wild" for the family's sake, and "Into Thin Air" to get it off his chest. I think maybe he had to write them for the money -- and/or fame. Both books would make fairly good reading if 50% shorter (like forget the first half). It made me angry that I had to waste my time reading the fluff before I could get to what the book, its reviews and its cover promised it would tell me. Shame on Jon Krakauer! Next time I'll happily settle for the "Outside" articles!
Rating: Summary: Believe the hype Review: The second half of the book is one of the most detailed and exciting accounts that I have ever read. The account of what goes into the climb drags on, but the adventure up the mountain definetly makes up for it. Krakauer does not seem to hold anything back. Having been my first Krakauer book, his imagery is incredible, especially during the storm. My appreciation for Everest has definitely grown
