Summary: Well written; tragic, but.... so what?
Review: Granted, it's well written, for the most part. And, yes, it's hard not to feel empathy for those who lost their lives and [moreover] for their friends and family, but.......... that empathy is tempered by the realization that these people decided to put themselves in deadly peril, NOT to explore new paths, NOR to accomplish something of benefit to humankind, but merely for RECREATION. To me, it seems terribly hubristic and self-centered, not to mention costly. In a way, this is a paean to death as the ultimate "thrill". A note to educators: PLEASE do not ask your students to post reviews of books you have assigned them! I'm sure I speak for many in saying that most people read these reviews for the opinions of people who have actually chosen to read these books, however much they may eventually regret the choice. Finding a review along the lines of "this book sucked because my teacher made me read it" rather defeats the purpose.

Summary: An X-treme and amazing journey!
Review: Wow! This book blew me away. I was obsessed with reading it and even finding out more about it after I read it. It seemed like fiction, but to realize that this was a true story just popped my lid! Jon tells the story from his perspective. He has a great way of story telling. Buy it, you won't regret it.

Summary: Wonderful book
Review: I can't understand the yo-yo's on this review page only giving this book 2 or 3 stars. Just because it is a factual account of a tragedy on Everest and isn't jam packed full of fictional action doesn't mean it's a bad book. In reality, this book is wonderful and amazing. John did a great job writing the book, especially after all he's gone through. I would recommend this book to anyone who found the tragedy unbelievable.

Review: Into Thin Air was a great example on how to follow your dreams. Each of the climbers seem to show great dedication and motivation when climbing Mount Everest. Even though they went through many struggles, in the end they were happy dying.

Summary: An action packed adventure
Review: Into Thin Air is a realistic, tragic account of what happened to very respected leaders and the rest of their expedition when they tried to climb the worlds highest peak, Mt. Everest, it is told by Jon Krakauer. Krakauer is writer for a magazine in Corvallis, Oregon who was asked to be a part of the expedition. It is a very detailed account of what happened and very enjoyable book for those who like action and adventurous books that keep you by the seat of your pants. If you have read the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen and enjoyed it you will surely enjoy Into Thin Air. They both turned into survival stories and that's why I think I found it so interesting. This book shows that Tibet and the Himilayas are not only a pretty sight but very dangerous. Dangerous because people don't know when to quit, since the drive is so great to climb the mountain. People suffering from insomnia and swollen brains still didn't quit, they kept trying to aquire their life-long dream of reaching the summit.

Summary: This book has it all!
Review: Into Thin Air is a very good book. I have read other books about Mtn. climbing and this ranks at the top. The story is so exciting that it's hard to believe that this is a true story. I have read one of Jon Krakauer's other books and I really like his writing style. I think the fact that he was actually there greatly increased the detail of the tragedy that struck on Everest. This brings a realism that cannot be imitated or reproduced. Overall I found the book to be exciting and realistic. I would recommend this book to just about anyone.

Summary: Into Thin Air was a confusing book!
Review: I read the boo Into thin Air. It was an o.k. book that I probably would'nt reccomend to other readers. THis book was about a man that climbed Mt. everest. It is in some parts thrilling and other parts are extremly boring. tHe main difficulty I faced while I was reading this book was that it was really confusing. It is always switching places times and locations between chapters. tHe only people I would reccomend this book to are people who are really into mountain climbing and would understand what the author is trying to say.

Summary: I could have been there
Review: Krakauer is an excellent writer; blending the history, the present emotions, personalities, and also information specific to climbing all into a single volume which is hard to put down. Each aspect of the book is fascinating and he interweaves into narrative that unravals at a steady pace. His ability to express how climbing, the mountain, and the other climbers impacted him places the reader right there in his shoes. As I read this, I found myself driven to reach the summit and yet I longed to return to someplace more comfortable. What a powerful way Krakauer has of recounting a true story. Excellent research and excellent story telling. And you leave the book knowing a little more history, a little more about Everest and a little more about mountaineering.

Review: This was the first book I had read on the topic of Mt. Everest. I found it absolutely impossible to put down. Jon Krakauer describes in vivid detail not only the accounts of May 10, 1996, but he also brings alive the sights and sounds that one experiences living in extreme places. I felt he did a good job of not blaming any one person or one event for the tradgedy. He showed how, at that altitude, a few minor mistakes and deviations from plan can result in serious consequences. This is a must-read for anyone who is at all interested in high-altitude climbing.

Review: Rarely does a book come along that takes you on an adventure such as this. The author keeps you turning the pages and hungering for more. People who aren't even fans of Everst or climbing will still love this book. Impossible to put down. First book I've read in a long time that really had an impact on me.
