Summary: It captured my heart 45 years ago, and it still has it.
Review: Apparently, I am one of the fortunate few who still has his Weekly Reader Children's Book Club copy of the original of this. I thought I was the only one who knew about it! Goodness, how silly of me! Now, on the Internet, I discover that it was loved by more people than I can count. I'm thrilled to hear that there's a movie in the works. Please, whoever publishes, bring it back! JGT

Summary: The only stand-out book I remember from elementary school!
Review: I found this book in the school library when I was in second grade. I liked it so much that I read the sequel. Thereafter, I recommended the book to anyone who would listen. Even as an adult, I find that I still discuss, with anyone who will listen, how much I enjoyed that book as a child--even if I can no longer remember most of the story details. My family moved when I was in third grade, and I have never since seen a copy of the book. But I'd pay handsomely for a copy. Please, please reprint this book. I'd send copies to all my nieces and nephews.

Summary: Just 5 stars?!
Review: This work of art needed at least 10 stars as a rating. Come on people, when you read that book, you knew it was special. How can I find another copy? Like so many of you, I purchased the book through an at school reading club. Where are you finding info on a movie about it? Please respond! We should demand a re-print of this classic.

Summary: A Hand-Me-Down world of pure fantasy!
Review: My mother used to sit between the two bedrooms that my brothers and sister and I shared, and read to us by the hall light until we all fell asleep...we never did. "David and the Phoenix" is the first book I remember, and I've already decided that it will be the first book that my daughter will remember. It is not only light-hearted and fun, but it is also poignant enough to make you cry. It is the best of EVERY world!

Summary: One of those books that give you the greatest feeling!
Review: The first time I read this book was when I was around seven. The cover was ratty, the spine was broken, the pages were yellow and fragile, and it was literally falling apart. At first I didn't want to read it. I did though. I still am enhanced by the flutter brained Phoenix, the annoying scientist, the Griffens, Griffons, and Griffins, and all David's adventures. The Phoenix is on my mom's and my list of hilarious and creatures-who-like-to-make-long-speeches list. (For instance, that list has the "old cob" from The Trumpet of the Swan in it.) I am THRILLED that they are making a movie out of it (although I'm afraid that they might change the story.) I wish I could get a more in shape copy of David and the Phoenix. I sometimes think about typing it up on the computer so MY kids can read it.

Summary: This is the book that made me fall in love with reading.
Review: I too received "David & the Phoenix" from the weekly reader book club. Like a first true-love, it is a book that I will never forget. How can a 50 year old man still remember a chlidren's book so well? I have spoken to several others my age who also fell in love with this book. I have a copy and searched for many years before I found a second copy, which I gave to a friend. It has always been my secret desire to write a screenplay of the book. I glad that someone finally has. Who is making the movie?

Several years ago I tracked down Edvard Ormondroyd and spoke with him on the telephone. He is a librarian in New England. I just wanted to thank him. He told me about his other books. I read them all. They were excellent. I especially liked the series with the time travel. They too would make an excellent movie.

Summary: Terrific story, full of imagination, great read
Review: I first read this book over the summer of 1957. I got it through the Weekly Reader book club. I was interested in the classics at the time and David and the Phoenix fit right in. The author made the characters so true to life that I wished for a long time that I could stumble upon a bird like the Phoenix and make it my friend.

This was just a great story and I read it at exactly the right time of my life. When my son was smaller I looked in every used book store and library I could find for a copy. I wanted him to read it so much. Unfortunately time has marched on and he is now 16 and probably will not be interested in reading it. But, I am going to get a copy any way.

I heartily recommend this wonderful book for the preteen set.

Summary: This book grabbed my imagination as a child and never let go
Review: In 1958 my third grade teacher read this book to the entire class, one chapter (maybe two on a rainy day) at a time. It was the highlight of my elementary education and I remember to this day the way we would gather round our teacher, hurridly hushing each other into quiet so she would start. The feeling of magic has stayed with me. We were transported with David and filled with emotion at the books end. A wonderful book

Summary: I put the book down and dreamed it continued. . .
Review: I must have been nine or ten when I first read this book, which was, I believe, first published in 1954? This book took me on a journey every night as I read it with the transistor radio turned on so my mother would think I was asleep. It stood out for me so much, that in 1991, I painted a Phoenix on a huge 54" by 54" bedsheet spread over a two-by-four frame to honor it and our library here, which had burned down in 1987 and had since "risen from the ashes," with the Phoenix as its symbol. As that child of nine, I took many night-time journeys after reading different chapters and couldn't tell where the book ended and my dreams began. It wasn't until 1991 that I re-read the book, after finding it in that very same library, that my dreams were what I remembered more of than the book. Thank you, Mr. Ormondroyd, for helping to kindle the imagination of a young girl! =)

Summary: Wonderful fantasy adventure. One of the Best!
Review: I bought this book in Utah as a child about 1965 through my elem. school's book club service. It's one of my all time favorite books. I have kept it and have read it to my children. It is their favorite children's book. Amazon: How can we contact the publisher and request a reprinting so future generations can enjoy it too? If you want to read another book that will leave a lasting impression, read "The Little White Indian Boy." Superb and a true story! Recently reprinted after many years of being out of print. So it seems we can talk publishers into reprinting!
