Rating: Summary: Emily series is better Review: These books about Anne are just too wholesome to be true. Without some semblance of truth, a story loses something. And I didn't like the way Anne could be broken down so easily. She made me sick. She did what ever the people around her told her to, just so they would like her and keep her. And she didn't aspire to be anything more than a simple school teacher. The book is depressing and so are the ones that follow it. If you really want to read something by L.M. Montgomery read the Emily books. Emily Star is tougher and much wilder than Anne, and so much more believeable.
Rating: Summary: To be Anne Review: That's Anne with an 'E'. Yes, I LOVE all of the tales of Anne. I have read and re-read these books many, many times. Everytime I finish one I long to start over again. In this the first book of the series we are introduced to Anne. We have the privilage of sharing in her love, her triumph, her trials. This book is truly a must read of all young (or not so young) woman.
Rating: Summary: A great growing up story. Review: I believe that this story is great for young and old alike. I grew up with Anne and I still love her. She is real. She makes you laugh, cry, and just about any other emotion comes to mind when I read about her escapades. I encourage everyone to read not only the first in the series, but every single book. Don't miss a moment in Anne's life. You will laugh when she laughs. You'll cry when she cries. When she gets mad at Gilbert Blythe; well, you get the picture. I am now 24 years old, and I still wouldn't trade in my Anne books or any of Lucy Maud Montgomery's books. So, in all, read them for yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Anne Shirley Goodness Will Follow Me All the Days... Review: I'm stealing the wordplay of my review title from The Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All, but it fits. The reading of Anne of Green Gables will cause you to inherit a patch of happiness which may be taxed but can't ever be taken away.I came to the series as an adult. I was a bookworm as a child and had a good friend who was the same, so imagine her surprise when she found out at this late age that I'd never met the redheaded wonder that is Anne Shirley. She pestered me to remedy this problem, and so I dutifully obeyed, secretly thinking the books couldn't be *that* good or I'd have read them way back when. Wrong! Scooch over Little House on the Prairie, we're making room for another classic! The characters are diverse, the situations comical and moving, and the scenery out and out gorgeous. (And if you're weak on your Canadian Maritimes geography, here's the cure.) I was 30 when I read AoGG, and as I reluctantly closed the covers I still couldn't help wishing I could BE Anne Shirley. I want to move to Prince Edward Island, sign my name Cordelia, and take on the world with feist and freckles. Like all "girls novels" written in bygone eras, there is sweetness and light by the tablespoonful. But it's very natural and innocent, not preachy and unbelievable. All of the characters have their faults, their very real emotions of doubt, worry, and even crabbiness. But unlike many modern literary creations, they can be as deep as that and still show genuine to-the-bone peace and happiness. Don't wait until you're 30 to read these books. And if you know a young girl with a stubborn streak, an interest in writing, and the desire to improve the world, these are a must-buy for her next birthday. (And if she likes them, she has another half dozen or so in the series to keep her busy!)
Rating: Summary: The most loving, poignant book ever written. Review: The entire Anne of Green Gables series is absolutely fantastic. From the first time that I read this book and its siblings , I held the series in reverence. I have reread every book at least twenty times and have gotton something wonderful out of it each time. The imaginative Anne Shirley is so easy to relate to, and you grow to love all the characters as you get to know them- from the stern, but loving Marilla... to Mrs. Lyde who is always poking and prying, but has a good heart... to quiet Mathew who saw Anne for who she was from the first- sweet and innocent. If you read no other book, read this one. It will warm you to your toes and make you wish you hadn't read it...just so you could have the pleasure of reading it again!
Rating: Summary: Read it at least dozen times Review: When I was in sixth grade, I was in love with this book. I read the entire Anne series, but the first was my favorite. Anne is such a likable character, and reminded me a little of myself with her many accidents. Matthew, sweet and quiet, reminded me of my grandfather. This book made me cry every time I read it. L.M.Montgomery was a great author, and I reccomend any of her books highly.
Rating: Summary: A classic, must-read for all ages and generations. Review: Anne of Green Gables is a wonderful series that everyone should read. Written in 1908, it is still relevant today because the rich charactierizatioins and descriptions are wonderful. Fall into the book and be prepared to be swept away. Anne is a wonderful, winsome character loved by many all over the world. Read the other editorials written by other readers and you will be amazed at how widespread admiration is for the Anne series.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful story Review: I have always loved the Anne of Green Gables series but if I were you I would buy one of the unillustrated versions. Fernandez did not do justice to the story with her illustrations. Anne of Green Gables is a timeless story even though it is set in a very specific era--a must read for all.
Rating: Summary: A memorable classic that touches your heart! Review: This is one of the best books ever written and the credit goes to spirited Anne (make sure it's spelled with an "e"!) Shirley. It's not often you find such a charming heroine as Anne. ANNE OF GREEN GABLES is the first of a series on this lovable orphan, and it begins with Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, a respectable brother and sister, living at Green Gables. They are both growing old and need a boy to help out on the farm. But they got a talkative redhead girl instead. Before they can send her back to the orphanage, Anne has managed to win the hearts of Prince Edward Island with her wit and imagination. She seems to affect everyone around her - from busybody Mrs. Rachel Lynde to handsome Gilbert Blythe. And now, Green Gables will never be the same! . . . It's not often you find such a spirited and lovable heroine as Anne. Captivating and captivatED, Anne is full of enthusiasm and fun, which gets her into all sorts of scrapes. This book is one that you are guaranteed to laugh over, cry over, and never want to put down! It is an ideal novel that you won't want to pass up! (Even if you don't read the rest of the Anne books, read this!)
Rating: Summary: My fourth grade teacher had me read this. Review: My fourth grade teacher had me read this. I was not excited to start it. But by chapter 2 I loved it already. I have re-read it 3 1/2 times and plan on reading it more still. My daughter will read this when she can read. It is that good of a book.
