Summary: Not as good as the Alex Cross series
Review: I enjoy Patterson's Alex Cross series, but this first in what I believe is a "women's murder club" series left me cold. The characters were not fully realized, and not likable enough for me to wish they were more so. Their relationships were unrealistic and inexplicable. The story was interesting, but the execution poor.

Summary: Enough twists and turns to classify as a roller coaster ride
Review: This is a thrilling mystery, that begins as almost no mystery at all. A killer is on the loose, one who stalks and kills newlyweds on their honeymoons, a horrible stealer of innocence and hope. Lindsay Boxer, homicide detective, has her hands full at first trying to figure out the puzzle pieces left behind at the crime scenes. Then, all at once, the story falls into place, the identity of the murderer so cut and dried in the first part of the book you wonder why James Patterson bothered to write the rest of the book. All is not as it seems as James Patterson takes you into the seamy underside of a writer's mind, the sick, twisted avenues of a psychopathic sex fiend, and a story that will keep you guessing until the very end. Lindsay forms a "Murder Club" of sorts, just herself and three very talented girlfriends. Together they sift through evidence and sort through clues until what is left of the crimes is a map that leads them places they never wanted to go. Throughout, our heroine homicide detective faces a life threatening illness that will not go away, and the certain knowledge that this will be her very last crime to solve.

Summary: Not his best but good
Review: I don't know if this is a helpful description, but the story had a made for a TV series, or maybe a B movie feel at first. It seemed a bit too formula and predictable, but the interesting twists in the formula certainly did appear late in the story, and not all things were as obvious as they first appeared. Initially, I did feel connection with his main character homicide detective Lindsay Boxer, and the girls "Murder club" was a nice sideline. It kept me going along until the plot finally thickened. However, if you are just starting with the Patterson escape crime novels, would suggest starting with 'Kiss The Girls' and 'Along Came A Spider'. If you like, certainly add '1st to die' 3rd. ronald reed jackson

Summary: Not his best work!
Review: Although the plot is engaging, with one decent twist at the end (the other "twist" was obvious), the characters were very underdeveloped. I like to walk away from a book still thinking about the characters and, in this one, I didn't even get to know them! Overall, I felt like I was reading the outline of a book and not the 'fleshed-out' version I would expect. It felt like the author was under pressure to deliver a book to his publisher and did not take the time to make this what could have been a great book.

Summary: Fast-paced thriller
Review: If I want a fast=paced cannot put down thriller, Patterson never lets me down. This book was not as good as his Alex Cross novels, but nonetheless, it was fast paced and kept me guessing until the end. Patterson is a great writer, and really knows how to keep the pages turning. I look forward to more "Women's Murder Club" books. The main characters are good ones -- very real people.

Summary: Great Book!
Review: I have been a long-time fan of James Patterson, as well as a huge fan of his character Alex Cross.

That said, "1st to Die" is a great book. I was hooked from the very first page and continued to be hooked "straight to the very end". For those of you who like twists and turns, this is the book for you.

One of the best things about "1st to Die" is the introduction of four new characters - all strong women who have risen to the top of their fields which have normally been dominated by men. I fell in love with each one of them as they were introduced to the plot.

I understand that Mr. Patterson is at work on another book with these characters (apparently it is going to be a series), and I really can't wait.

Summary: Why? Why? WHY?
Review: Do I continue to read this author's books? Cardboard characters, cardboard suspense, totally predictable "TWIST" ending....at least I'm getting them from a friend and I don't have to pay!

Summary: It Ain't Over Until It's Over
Review: "What is the worst thing anyone has ever done?" James Patterson takes a respite from the Alex Cross series to answer this question and its penetrating follw up - "Could you do it again?" Patterson introduces us to a new investigative team, the Women's Muder Club. These ladies are not the North Street Irregulars or Charlie's Angels. They are tough, level-headed women who use their brains and think outside of the box. A homocide detective (Lindsey), a reporter (Cindy), a medical examiner (Claire), and a D.A. (Jill) join forces to track down one of the worst serial killers this side of Hannibal Lector: someone who murders newlyweds. And I mean brand new newlyweds, for one couple is murdered in the bridal suite of a posh San Francisco hotel, another in the men's room (that's right) at their wedding reception at the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame.

These ladies, each successful in a male-dominated profession, gather together at a San Francisco watering hole and play ideas off of one another in an attempt to catch this fiend. They, literally, start with nothing but piece together snippets of details all the way through the case until an arrest is made. But - bingo! - we know Patterson and suddenly nothing is as it seems. Or is it? Do they have the right person or don't they? Patterson, using his trademark short, quick chapters, has us hopping this way and that. He also mixes first person narratives (Lindsey) with third person narratives (the killer). Patterson is a master at this and the pace really flies. But, who is the killer? Is everything that they have run down devastatingly wrong? There's the pleasure in this game, leading to a mystery that really moves. Also, I have to say that Patterson, himself, does an outstanding job of writing from a woman's perspective in the first person of Lindsey.

The back flap of the book says that this will be a new series. Good. However, I have to wonder if all of the original ladies will be back for the sequels. You see, this book opens with one of them holding a gun to the side of her own head. If there is one weakness in this book, in my opinion, it is Patterson's attempt to make the main characters a little too sympathetic to the reader. Still, it is a good read. So, what's the worse thing anyone has ever done? Believe me, in Patterson's excellent hands, you don't want to know.
