Summary: A review by Mandy for English first period.
Review: Harry Potter by J.K.Rowling, was by far the most imaginitive book I've ever read. It starts off with a wizard, Albus Dumbledore, who is the Headmaster at Hogwarts, a wizard school, he drops a baby off infront of the Dursley's doorstep. The baby was Harry Potter, and he needed someone to look after him because his parents were killed by an evil wizard, Voldemort. The only family he had left were the Dursley's and the absolutley hated wizards and Harry! He grew up not knowing who he was or where he came from, all he thought he knew was that his parents died in a car accident and he was the only survivor, left with a lightning bolt shaped scar on his forehead. Harry grew living in a cupboard under the stairs, and he always looked really skinny, it was from the big hand-me-down from the Duresley's son, Dudley. He was the same age as Harry but about ten times the size. The Dursley's often sent Harry to his cupboard without any dinner, if anything bad that happened, because they knew what he was, but poor HArry had no power over it. Well Harry started to receive mail, with no return address. Harry went to get the mail one day and saw a letter addressed to him, so he started to open it, but then Mr. Dursley took it away. Well, he received MANY more letters but still, they kept them from him, eventually they were forced to drive away to stay away from all the letter. On Harry's eleventh birthday, a wizard named Hagrid found Harry and told him he was a wizard and explain everything that happened with his parents. He happened to go off to Hogwarts Wizard School, and at the end of the year he has to battle a man named Quirrell, who in the end turns out to be the wizard that killed his parent, Voldemort. Voldemort lost the battle but is still alive and waiting for his next attempt to kill Harry Potter. This book was full of imagination and fantasy. I liked it to a point, but I'm not into fantasy books. It was also full of suspense, which kept me going in the book, or else I would have had to put the book down, but over all I really liked it, but I recommend this book to younger readers, for example, eight year old to about eleven. I know I won't be reading the books that follow but maybe another book by the same author.

Summary: Not just a book for kids!
Review: Harry Potter came to my attention when a group of 10 year olds I work with told me it was their favorite book. I read it and went on to read book 2,3, & 4.

Harry Potter is so well written that I would never consider it just a children's book. This is a rare book that both children and adults can enjoy together. The imagery and imagination of J.K. Rowling shines through on every page. A must-read for anyone who has a bit of kid left in them!

Summary: Superb!
Review: Harry Potter got my 10-year-old son interested in reading again. Hurrah! He went from top in his class in Accelerated Reading in second grade to total apathy in third grade. I really believe it was due to peer pressure. Since I started reading the Harry Potter books, he really got into it. He even acted out the different characters in the book. I am looking forward to him starting fourth grade, maybe he will be top in his class again. Thank you, Ms. Rowling.

Summary: Harry Potter
Review: Harry Potter had a horrible childhood being bossed around by his slave driving Aunt Petunia and Uncle Vernon. His Uncle and Aunt forced him to live in a cupboard under the stairs which he has lived in for nearly 11 years. Just when he believes that there is no more hope of being treated with respect magical things start happening. For instance, letters start being sent to Harry's house addressed specifically to the cupboard under the stairs.

The letters state that Harry is not a muggle (none magical folk) but a wizard who is to attend a wizarding school at Hogwarts. The day Harry arrives at Hogwarts is the point of the story where all the fun and excitement happened. He meets two friends Ron and Hermione who become best friends. Harry also meets an enemy almost instantly, Draco Malfoy. Harry gets into a lot of sticky situations and meets new people. At one part Harry even comes in contact with the most powerful wizard of all times, Lord Voldermort.

This book not only expands the imagination but it's a real treat for people of all ages. I truly enjoy this book and I strongly think that you will find this book a once in a lifetime experience.

Summary: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Review: Harry Potter had never worn a magic cloak or played a game on broom sticks in the air. All her had ever known was his horrible life living with his mothers dead sister, her husband and their fat son Dudley who looks remarkably like a pig. Until one day, when a mysterious letter arrived in the mail for Harry, inviting him to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry had no idea he had and magic in him, he didn't even know a magic world existed.
Hogwarts was like a dream come true for Harry. For the first time he had friends, food, and a place were he belonged. ...

Summary: It's not a children's book
Review: Harry Potter has been around for a while now, but it is only recently that he has been elevated to a worldwide phenomenon. I can remember first hearing about these books when book three was about to come out. I remember seeing people line up to get it.

I know how people can sometimes get freakish with children's books, and I know that typically it is women that fall into that category. Perhaps it is maternal instinct that causes women to latch onto this genre. Perhaps that is why I can make no sense of it.

Back then I would have never thought I would be a fan of Harry Potter books. Their just kids' books, I would think, or at best young adult. But their not.

I finally decided I was going to read the first book before the movie came out. I had bought the book for my girlfriend on a hunch that she would like it some time before that. It of course goes without saying that I ended up buying the rest for her as she plowed through each one in record time. She would talk about the books claiming each one just got better than the last, and she would strongly urge me to read them. I had to admit at that point that I was becoming more interested, and I did want to read the book before seeing the movie.

Unfortunately, the movie came out before I got a chance to read the book, but that didn't stop me. It's the first time I've ever read a novel after seeing the movie it was based on, and surprisingly it didn't detract much from the experience.

Harry Potter is about children. It's a story told in a manner making it suitable for children, but it is not a children's book. When I was a kid, I always felt insulted at the garbage thrown at me, always being dumbed down because I was a kid and wasn't expected to appreciate anything deep and meaningful or intelligently written. I suppose it is these experiences that held me back from reading these books. But this book is neither garbage or dumbed down for little people.

J.K. Rowling writes a story about three kids and their first year at a prestigious british school. In many ways the story is as classic as it is unique. What sets the story apart is that this is no ordinary school and the kids are no ordinary kids. They are wizards and they take part in a world invisible to the rest of us muggles. The story itself is a very human one. All the wizarding and magic is interesting and fun, but the story would probably still work even if set in the normal world. The story isn't wonderful because Harry is a wizard or because there are trolls and magic in it. The story is wonderful because it really is a great story. Rowling does a fantastic job creating fascinating characters that you really want to keep reading about. She is amazing at keeping the story flowing and not getting bogged down in too much description yet still not leaving you confused. But what I am most impressed about is the plot. She is so masterful at the use of misdirection, that you simply will not guess the outcome (the movie is not a good example of this), yet you will be able to look back and it will all make sense.

The best thing about this book (and probably why it is so popular) is that it literally appeals to everyone, as a good story should. We only dumb down children's books because we're stupid, not because kids are. In the same way Mark Twain was able to write contemporary stories about kids, reach a mass audience, and be hailed as a great author, J.K. Rowling does the same thing for a new generation. And just as Mark Twain's stories about some kids named Huckleberry Finn and Tom Sawyer are as classic as they are timeless, so too are J.K. Rowling's stories about some kids named Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and Harry Potter destined to be.

Summary: Impressed Despite Misgivings
Review: Harry Potter has been the rave for some time, and I tend to avoid top sellers, because the few times I have broken down and tried to read one, I have been burned.
Harry Potter has blown me away.
They are not a difficult read, but they are a good read. It is a simple story, and reads in a similar style to such books as, "BFG", "Matilda" and "James and the Giant Peach".
It is a rare childrens book that does not over simplify it's language or ideas for children. And this is one such book.
I think it is very appropriate for children of all ages, (including us over sized ones). It is Ideal for a bedtime story, because the parents should get as much enjoyment as the children.
So I say, Harry Potter impressed me, despite my misgivings.
