Rating: Summary: Terrific Fantasy for Children and Adults Review: We purchased this book in Scotland where the title is Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. The Philosopher's Stone makes more sense in overall mythology than the Sorcerer's Stone, but I suppose that the American publishers were afraid that Americans would not understand. How patronizing -- the book has legs like a centipede and wouldn't have any difficulty under the other name. I read a recent review in the Washington Post which called the book formulaic and fantastic. It is formulaic, definitely, but that does not diminish its excellence. The story is wonderful and the formula works like a charm. Part of the charm is in the details -- like the list of stuff that Harry has to take to school. Among other things, he needs a cauldron, pewter, size 2. A reader may then imagine a whole line of cauldrons, sizes 1 - 10, made from diverse materials such as cast iron, bronze, pewter, brass, and stone. The mystery gripped all of us, our 9-year-old daughter and her parents (almost 40 years old). This book was so much fun that we phoned relatives in England to ask them to purchase it for us before they come to visit -- we specified the two volume boxed set (only alternative is hardback of second volume) so that we could have volume one to give away as a gift. We can't wait to read Harry Potter and the Secret Chambers. In the meantime our daughter is reading Harry Potter (#1) for the third time.
Rating: Summary: I thought is was FANTASTIC Review: We read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in school, and we couldn't put it down. After we finished it, I got online and had my dad order it for me. I liked it just as much as the first time I had read it. J.K. Rowling is one of my favorite authors!!

Rating: Summary: Harry Potter is awsome! Review: We think that Harry Potter was a very interesting book. The words in the book may sound like they are weird but they are actually words that made the book a top hit. In the book we liked the parts about the conflict between Harry and the Dursleys. One example that we thought, that the book was good is the way that she used action to tell the story. We also liked when Hagrid broke into the houseboat and made Dudley have a tail, and when Hagrid told Harry his past. When Harry went into the "keep out" room it really touched my heart, seeing them keep a three-headed dog keep up by itself guarding a hidden trap door.Another example we thought as we read the book was, she did a good job putting all those words together to make a really good story. The End of the story gives a good beginning in the next book when Harry defeats the Two-Faced Voldamont (You-Know-Who) disappeared when Harry and Hermione defeated him. We liked it when Harry was playing chess with a life size chess pawns that talked to him in the hidden room in Hogwarts. We also liked it when Malfoy got jealous when Harry got the Nimbiss 2000 Broomstick.
Rating: Summary: We Couldn't Stop Reading It! Review: We took Sorcerer's Stone on a trip to Denver and I read it to my 9 year old and 6 year old. We couldn't put it down. The kids begged and begged for me to continue reading. I read to them while sitting in the car, in restaurants, on the plane and of course, at bedtime. I spaced it out so that we finished it on the plane ride home. This is a fantastic book. We've started Camber of Secrets and we are all completely enthralled. One of the best books I have ever read!

Rating: Summary: Introducing Harry Potter Review: Welcome to the world of Harry Potter! Book one introduces a world within our world, a world of wizzardry and wonder. J.K. Rowling has written a wonderful story about a young boy who discovers his true heritage. This well-written book is a page turner and for anyone who feels that these are merely kid's books are severely missing out on a wonderful story. Once you read this one, you will want to continue and see what else lies in store for Harry and his new life. Harry Potter was a normal child living a miserable existance with his aunt and uncle. His parents were dead and he was raised by them. One day, a letter appears at his mailbox and changes his life forever. He discovers the mystery of who he really is to become and finds a world that is more amazing than could ever be imagined.

My story is interesting. Before I read these books I HATED READING. I just COULDN'T FIND ANYTHING THAT INTERESTED ME! But this book turned me around. I loved it. It was imaginative, interesting, thoughtful, well written and heart warming. I love the characters. Harry himself is amazing. But I would have to say that my favorite charachter is HAGRID. Lord Voltmort is chilling. I just couldn't put this book down. I read it in 2 and 1/2 days. So parents, children, and anyone in general. You don't have to be 9-12 to love this book. I am sixteen and I have no problem admitting that I am a Harry Potter Junky. Peoples of all ages even adults can enjoy these books. It was fabulous. Nabil aka Harry Potter Junky
Rating: Summary: Americans?!? Review: Well for starters this book was really good as recomended by my English teacher. The thing which I am finding annoying though is the fact that the Americans have changed the title to "Sorcerer's Stone" IT'S NOT CALLED THAT! It's called "Philosopher's Stone". Can anyone out there tell me why the title was changed?
