Summary: Magic Anyone?
Review: As many kids and adults before me I thorouly enjoyed reading this book. I couldn't put it down. Every plot line led to something else interesting and you just had to read on. J.K. Rowling did an excellent job writing the plot lines.

The story starts when Harry's parents are killed by You-Know-Who and Harry is made to live with his uncle, aunt, and the unbearable cousin Dudley. Harry lives a boring and horrible life as he is mistreated by his relatives. Everything however gets much more interesting on Harry's 11th birthday as everthing seems to be out of ordinary. Harry begins to find out the truth about his past and before he knows it is wisked off to Hogwarts itch and Wizardry School with the giant gameskeeper of Hogwarts named Hagrid.

Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione have many adventures as they survive the sorting hat, battle a mountain troll, survive Professor Snape's Potions class, befriend Hagrids Dragon, survive Draco Malfroy and his 2 buddies, and find out the truth about the sorcerer's stone. Sometimes it is very frustrating reading this book because you want the kids so much to tell the teachers what thy have discovered so they don't get into danger but it is impossible. I thourouly enjoyed this book and there wasn't one point in the 3 hours that I was reading it was I bored.

Hope I'd helped!

Summary: I only read it to please my nephew
Review: As my title indicates I originally bought the "Harry Potter" book so that my 10 year old nephew and I could discuss "literature". Imagine my surprise when I couldn't put it down. Childhood memories of Roald Dahl came flooding back to me and put a big smile on my face.

Now I've read 2 & 3 and am hungrily waiting for Book 4, and have recommended them to everyone I know.

My only concern is what will happen after Harry graduates from Hogwarts?

Review: As soon as i opened the book i couldnt stop reading. It is the best book i have ever read. I think that J.K. Rowling is a very good writer. As the books go on you figure out that everything fits and makes sense at the end.

Summary: I Couldn't Put It Down!
Review: As soon as I started to read this book, I was hooked. All day long, all I could think about is what would happen next. The plot was great and the characters were terrific!

Summary: It actually lives up to the hype
Review: As the editor of the children's section in our local newspaper, I had heard a lot about the Harry Potter phenomenon. I never even considered reading the books for myself until one of my co-workers recommended I read 'The Sorcerer's Stone.' He had just finished reading it and was impressed with it. A few days later I saw the book in the store and bought it on impulse. Three weeks later, I've read all four Harry Potter books and can't wait for the next one. As an adult reader, I was impressed with the thought Rowling put into her characters and their world. She takes the time to create a magical world so vivid it's hard to believe it exists only in the books. Her use of word roots is amazing. Above all, she seems to honestly respect the kids who read her books - she never talks down to them or oversimplifies her stories. I can't say enough good things about the Harry Potter books and J.K. Rowling. These are the best new books I've read in a long time.

Summary: For skeptics of the Harry Potter Series...
Review: As the Harry Potter hype mounted over the past few years, so too did my anti-Potter sentiments; I refused to partake in the latest trend of what was sure to be pointless drivel. Now I can safely say I was mistaken.

I finally gave in when Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone came to HBO. The acting wasn't great, but the story seemed compelling enough to warrant reading the book. There were a few significant holes in the overall plot, but that didn't diminish the fact that it was a very entertaining read. Shortly after completing Sorceror's Stone, I moved on to the remaining books, which I think get better.

Some say the second book (Chamber of Secrets) is the weakest of the series, but it builds on the story and is just as entertaining as the first one, if a little more contrived. The third book (Prisoner of Azkaban) is really good. I've just started the fourth book, but it already has a much better opening than the others. For those skeptics out there, read the first book, and if you're still not convinced, give the series a second chance and try the second book...by that point you'll figure out whether you like the series or not. Keep in mind that the series is directed at children, and is generally less air-tight than other Fantasy books like the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. (I'm still annoyed that the film version of The Sorceror's Stone grossed more money than The Fellowship of the Ring, but whatever...)

Having said all of that, there are problems I have with the story. [Note: SPOILERS AHEAD - Don't read unless you've read the books]

* If Dumbledore & others at Hogwarts or the Ministry of Magic keep an eye on Harry while he's with the Dursleys, why do they allow Harry to live under such deleterious conditions? There are serious human rights violations going on there.

* The "points system" at Hogwarts encounters real conflict-of-interest issues. If a teacher doesn't like you, he/she can dock 5 points from your house for little more than a smirk.

* If Slytherin has such a foul reputation of churning out bad wizards, why isn't there some kind of internal audit of that house by Dumbledore or others at Hogwarts? And if Salazar Slytherin was such a punk when the four wizards started the school, why did the other three keep his legacy in their school?

I can rationalize the answers to these and other problems I have with the books (several more which I'll omit in this forum), but it would be nice if they were addressed in subsequent books.

Summary: The books are just as magical as Harry Potter himself....
Review: As the Harry Potter mania is sweeping across the world faster than you can say "Hogwarts", I feel there is no need to explain the storyline of the book. When Harry Potter first came out and ALL my friends were raving about it, I couldn't have cared less and reminded myself this was probably another "Pokemon" craze. However, when the movie was released, I thought I would see what made everyone glassy-eyed over an 11-year-old wizard boy. All I have to say is that the movie DID inspire me enough to read the book. The book is amazing, or should I say "wicked"! The plot was so captivating that I couldn't even put the book down until I realized it was 2AM! The characters, Harry Potter, Ron Weasly, Hermoine Granger etc. are so absorbing that you just want to know more about everything! Heck, even my sister (11 years old) who HATES books (She thinks Enid Blyton stories give her a headache) loved the book! My sister has NEVER read a book longer than 100 pages. She, however, is hooked onto these books and is even willing to read the 4th book that she referred to as a dictionary! Harry Potter gave us, kids and teens, something. Something for us muggles to dream about. To bring us into the magical world of Harry Potter and explore it with the help of the brilliant J.K. Rowling.

Summary: All right, all right...
Review: As the Harry Potter mania went around, I, the sophisticated 16-year-old that I am, swore that I wouldn't get sucked into it. I clung to my classic literature roots, claiming I'd read Dostoyevsky for fun before Harry Potter. However, recently I was required to read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone for an academic(!) event at school. I was stunned. Read Harry Potter for a Literary Criticism assignment- that's crazy talk! But sadly yes, I too found this book completely engaging. The plot is entertaining, the characters amusing, and the dialogue humorous. I hesitate to call it a modern classic, but all those who think that they are above Harry Potter, think again!

Summary: I'm the mom and I read the book first...
Review: As the mother of a precocious 9yo girl, I was amused to read in the news about parents wanting this series of books banned in schools. Being the mother that I am, that was pretty much enough to make me run right out and buy all three books for my daughter. I don't agree with the parents/readers that commented that the books are much to 'violent' for children to read. I would much rather my child read this book than watch the evening news anyday of the week. As her parent, I thought it was my job to discuss the world around us with her, not sheild her from it and have her be shocked by it when she reaches adulthood.

I'll continue to read each book before her to ensure that it's something I am comfortable with her reading, because really, it should be MY choice, not the choice of a bunch of closed-minded people.

Summary: Thank-you J.K. Rowling!
Review: As the mother of an 11 year old boy who truely "hates" to read, I will be forever greatful to J.K. Rowling for grabbing my sons attention. Each night we lay down together and take turns reading. He begs me to keep reading Harry Potter! That is the first time he has EVER done that. He usually says, "Ok are we done yet?" Not with this book. He just can't get enough of it. I am forever in your debt J.K. Rowling! Thank-you, Thank-you!
