Rating: Summary: A wonderful book for children and adults Review: OK, I admit. I wondered what all the fuss was about. Did these people think this was the first chilren's book about wizards and magic and such? I mean, come on!But finally I ordered the book thinking that at the least I'd add it to my daughter's growing library (she's only 3, but I keep adding books for when she's older). I started Harry's adventure at work when I opened the shipping box. I drove through KFC on the way home because I didn't want to stop reading to cook supper for my family. The Harry Potter books have something for anyone willing to let a little fantasy into their heart. Adults and children will identify with a character who is bullied and mistreated for being different. We are cheering for Harry when he finds out there are others like him. It's the Ugly Duckling of the Magical Realm. Chilren will benefit from the good v. evil morals of these stories. And as a plus, they get these valuable lessons without preachy overtones. I am anxious for the next book in the series to come out for my own reading pleasure. I also can't wait for my daughter to be old enough to enjoy these stories. Like The Chronicles of Narnia, Charlotte's Web, and Alice in Wonderland--this is a series that I plan to read aloud to my kid's and hope they want to read again when they are old enough.
Rating: Summary: Wow! Review: OK, I'll admit I didn't read the Harry Potter books on purpose, and I thought the lines of people waiting outside bookstores at midnight for the latest release were just clever hype. Then I thought, I might as well read the first one so I can cleverly rebut people who gush on and on about how wonderful the series is, and how much it motivated their kid to read when they've never cracked a book in their life. Now, of course, I'm hooked. The theme of the books is pretty standard: underdog hero overcomes incredible odds to achieve victory; good triumphs over evil. What I didn't expect is that the author, J.K. Rowling, has a rare talent that she shares, I believe, with such authors as Mark Twain: she brings characters to life, and she makes you want to read "just a little bit more" to see what happens next. These books are *compelling* reads! I now understand exactly why kids who are not "bookish" will wait in line all night to get the next one! Highly recommended for all ages! (...)
Rating: Summary: I love it! Review: OK, I'm 23rs old and the age group is 9-12 but I love this book. :-) It had me laughing all the way through. I adore the characters and the surprise villian! I can't wait to get the other three. Also recommended: The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkein (for an older age group). :-)
Rating: Summary: Simply one of the best books that I've ever read!!! Review: OK, I'm 28 and I absolutely LOVED this book! It's beautifully written, absolutely imaginative and it's a real page turner. Very highly recommended for both children AND adults. I'm a children's librarian and Im recommeding this to all our patrons. Brilliant!!
Rating: Summary: Love It Review: Ok, If you need to read a review to buy this book then you're not a Harry Potter fan for one, and those that want this book aren't likely to read a review to influence this decision. Its a great start to a wonderful fantasy world and a great place to lose yourself. For kids my eye!
Rating: Summary: Book, Audio Tape- what's the diff? They're both excellent!! Review: OK, let's get straight to the point- Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone ranks quite high among my list of favorite books. I first got hooked in fourth grade, when my friend INSISTED that I read this book, and wouldn't stop bugging me until I had read the last page. And it didn't take me long to do it. The story of an eleven-year-old wizard was particularly appealing to my 10-year-old Muggle self. The captivating story of Harry Potter, the nobody-turned-famous, caught my attention from the very first page. As soon as baby Harry was left on that doorstep, I left my couch behind and was suddenly transported into the world of British wizards. I felt as if I could taste those pepper-flavored Every Flavor Beans along with Harry and Ron. J. K. Rowling is a spectacular author: her action-packed books are well-written and detailed. Naturally, Harry Potter craze soon took over. I have read all 4 books that have come out so far, as well as the filler "schoolbooks"...in fact, my mother is reading Chapter 3 of this book to my younger sister as I write this review. It was not much later that I discovered the next great thing in the Harry Potter line- audio tapes. My family currently owns the audio tape sets of books 1-4. Jim Dale's voice gives this magical story a new twist. His wonderful voices for all of the characters make the story much more lively and exciting. Car rides are no longer boring (or eventful- a word of advice--audio tapes are a great distraction for otherwize carsick riders!) Both book and audio tapes are phenomenal, and I would reccomend them to readers age 6 to 136!
Rating: Summary: Fun for all ages, it's true! Review: Ok, like other reviewers, I had to get past the hype of this series before I would read it. Actually, my 40something sister read this book at the suggestion of her co-workers, and my 50something mom-in-law also read it. This got me to thinking that these are people whose opinions I respect, so I'll give it a chance (and I'm 30something). As you will find from other reviews, it is an easy read--I probably could have finished it in less than the week it took me had I not had a baby and toddler to take care of! I'm a huge fan of the Christian Left Behind series as well as authors Dean Koontz, Robin Cook, Michael Crichton, etc. and found this book to be a breath of fresh air! The character development is superb (you really get to despising his "muggle", or non-magical, family!), the elements of fantasy (the whole spells/wizardry/broomsticks aspect) wonderfully described. The fictional game of Quidditch sounds like something I'd go see! I also like that each book (of which I hear there will be 7) corresponds to Harry's seven years in secondary school, so it'll be interesting to watch the characters we've grown to love (or hate)mature, or otherwise change. I admit, I'm looking forward to the movie--but only because I read the book first. I hope others don't go to see the movie without treating themselves to creating all the wonderful scenes and actions in their minds first! And when my daughter and son are older, I'll pass these books on to them!
Rating: Summary: Enjoyable for all ages Review: Ok, so I'm not your typical Harry Potter reader. I am a 21 year old college student instead of an 11 year old 5th grader but I LOVED this book. It was all that everybody said it would be and so much more. I couldn't put it down because I was so caught up in Harry's adventures. Usually the end of a book is dissappointing but this was quite satisfying. I have started on the second book of the series and can't wait to read the rest. Buy This Book!
Rating: Summary: See the movie and you'll be happy Review: OK, so I'm the 4404th person to review this book. Anyway, It's a fast read, and if you see the movie shortly after, like I did, you'll appreciate the story even more. Oh, don't just have kids read it. I'm 25 and I've read it, and so has my dad. I know I sound like a broken record saying this, but it's fun, and a good way to pass time. And this is from one who usually doesn't read fantasies!
Rating: Summary: Great book for kids and adults Review: Ok, so this is a "kids book", but who cares? It's entertaining enough for adults too. Rowling's style reminds me of Roald Dahl, which is a very good thing. All the books in this series are highly addictive, and also a quick and easy read. A fun read.
