Rating: Summary: Enjoyment for anyone Review: No matter what age you are or where you are from, this is a book that you can enjoy. It is excellent reading: I couldn't put it down once I started it. There are enough characters that you could relate to at least one of them. If you can't afford to stay up all night to finish the book, then don't worry, because the chapters are not too long, so you always have the choice to read it a little at a time. This is also a book to read over and over again, because you will notice different aspects of the characters and the story each time you read it.
Rating: Summary: A good read Review: No matter what the setting of a tale is, be it fantasy by Tolkien, science fiction by Lucas, historical, contemporary, early 20th century by Christie etc, the most important element in the tale is the people, the thoughts, actions and interactions of the human beings. Thus it was with Star Wars, it is the same with Harry Potter.I read the book with great relish, having been a fan of Enid Blyton in my younger days, I recognised many of the characters appearing in the story having parallels to other such school days stories written nearly a century before. There would be bullies, there would be those who lack confidence, there would be the smug, the wastrel, the showoff etc., and almost as many varieties of the faculty. The magic was merely a tool, a decor, a setting, and another of making the readers to cease taking things for granted. Rowling had probably borrowed ideas not only from Blyton's stories, but also from R Dahl, notice the various goody treats the students can get and compare them with Charlie and the chocolate factory. Being able to cast spells is no big deal if every other person can learn to do so too. Pranksters in the real world learnt to do the same using knowledge gained from chemistry classes, physics class and just a lot of imagination. In fact, in Enid Blyton's school stories, the students had access to devices not available to their teachers, which is not the same in Hogswart. There are dark elements in the story, instances of bloodiness etc, but these serve to warn that magic, even in fiction, is not without terrible consequences. Ultimately, the book is just pure fun to read. It is certainly not meant to be a Christian message, but it does not deserve more blame for leading children astray any more than superhero comics or star wars movies.
Rating: Summary: THE BEST Review: No words! Harry Potter is the best book that I read. I don't no why, but is magnific!
Rating: Summary: A delightful romp of a novel for a boring weekend Review: Normally, I wouldn't have much good to say about this book. The writing is very boring, with no particular style or emphasis on emotions, the story line moves at the same drab pace all the way through, and there is nothing really deep or interesting about any of the characters. Yet Rowling presents us with such an imaginative twist that this book is difficult to resist. This book's world is one of pictures whose subjects don't like to stay put, chess pieces that shout out suggestions to the player, and a game played high in the air on broomsticks with flying balls. The world the author creates is one of great originality and delights, with inventions and characters somewhat reminiscent of Roald Dahl. Curl up with this book on a boring day and enjoy yourself.
Rating: Summary: An Amazing Story - Opened up a whole new world! Review: Not as much as a suspense story, but a magical one, not in a childish way, but in a way that opens up the potential of the whole universe to you. I wish the author had developed this story a bit more, had it longer, versus making 8 sequals! If this story was 5,000 pages, no one would be able to put it down
Rating: Summary: Not since Tolkien Review: Not since I finished the Lord of the Rings many years ago have I read a fantasy that could entertain both young and old readers at the same time.
Rating: Summary: A New Favorite! Review: Not since reading Madeleine L'Engle's A Wrinkle In Time as a kid in fifth grade have I ever been so entranced by a book. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone kept me riveted with joy on my couch most of the day. So fascinated was I that I immediately searched the net looking for more Harry Potter books by J. K. Rowling and promptly handed the book over to my 12 year old daughter, the real reader in the family. I first heard about this book on National Public Radio - Ms. Rowling was on doing an interview. I was making the commute home from work. She read the passage about the trip to the zoo and the snake and the disappearing glass and she chortled on about muggles and such. I stopped by our local bookstore only to find the last few copies of the book had been snatched up by other listeners just minutes before I arrived. What an agonizing two weeks followed....
Rating: Summary: Not just for kids! Review: Not to sound arrogant, but I'm an avid reader with hundreds of books behind me. I found "The Sorcerer's Stone" one of the most wonderfully entertaining ones I've come accross. When I started reading it, I didn't know it was primarily a children's book. . . After reading it, I still wouldn't know it if someone hadn't told me. It's a shame it has a reputation as a children's book, for I fear that will keep many adults from a wondrous experience! I most highly recommend it!
Rating: Summary: This changed me! Review: Not too long ago, only last year, I hate reading books. But it all changed... In one of my classes we had to read Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone. I thought this book is going to be very, very boring. But being a good student I took the book home to read the first chapter, and I'll say "never judge a book by its cover." That night I couldn't put the book down. My family thought I went ill because I was actually reading a book. The first night I got to page 200. I finished the book in only two days. If I wanted I could have finished that one day but I was getting really tired. After reading the book I went out bought the Sorcerer's Stone and also Chamber of Secrets, lets not stop there I bought year three and year four. I also went out to buy the collector's edition of the Sorcerer's Stone. J.K. Rowling changed my perspectives on books, I love her Harry Potter books! And I can't wait for year 5 and the movie to come out.
Rating: Summary: I snuggled as a wuggle to this novel Review: Nothing bad can be said about htis first time novel -- and nothing shall be. Get it. Read it. Give it to another. Demand that they give it to another. And, before you know it, you can converse about things that are created and detailed in this book. Don't hold back. Read it as soon as you can. Then, see if you can away from the second and the third. You won't be able to. Before you know it, you'll be as hooked to this as you or your child were to such things as beanie babies and pokeman.
