Rating: Summary: Great start to a great series Review: Loved this book one of the best of the series.A great start right from the begging we fell for Harry and get lost in his world.
Rating: Summary: A new hero for the ingenious ones Review: Lured away from "grown-up" reading by Grandpre's cover illustration, I stayed up until 2:30am to follow Harry's exploits. Rowling has captured the adventure necessary to entice younger and older readers. Her depiction of a parallel world brings back memories of Madeline L'Engle and will appeal to the reader who enjoys an escape from the daily grind. Tight, fresh writing made it easy to visualize the creepiness of dark hallways and the excitement of the chase. Good chapter lengths mean this is an ideal choice for reading aloud at story time for children aged 6-96, just make sure to reassure the younger ones. Strong cast of characters added to the richness of the story. Let's hope book two is just as fascinating.
Rating: Summary: It was, well, MAGICAL! Review: Lush with new words, funny pranks, and exciting adventures, this book is full of thrills. I love the consept of his aunt/uncle despising him and I was scared to death when he met Voldermort. If you haven't read this book, READ IT!!!! Get your teacher to read it to your class! They'll all love it! (It may get you out of tests too!)
Rating: Summary: magical Review: mabee i'm just one in a million but this book was so enthralling. It should be complusery reading in all schools and colledges.although i am 15 years old i really enjoyed this book. You Americans are strange why don't you call it "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" as we do in England.
Rating: Summary: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Review: Magic, adventure, and a wide range of mystery all of which is composed in this peice of literature. If I were to rate this book on a scale from one to ten I would have to give it a nine point five. Why you ask? Well, besides the fact that I don't like giving a perfect ten it was great. The characters were lively and the consistent suspense was enormously good. "Petrificus Totalus!" she cried, pointing it at Neville... he stood and then fell flat on his face, stiff as a board."(Rowling 273). Now don't you wish you could just make that happen to some people in particular in your life, but its just too good to be true right? Well, J.K. Rowling has a powerful way to reach out to your senses and make you want to read more. She creates these detailed pictures and images in your mind that make you think "Wow, how could that be?". This book would clearly be my first choice if you like witchery and wizardry. There is nothing that could make me feel better than to sit back and relax with this book in my hands and read it next to the fire on a snowy winter night.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining, especially for those with short memories Review: Magic, children who are magic belatedly being discovered, alternate worlds, worlds coexisting within others, enchanted beings, weirdly fascinating schools to teach these kids about magic, British countryside & manners...Sound familiar? You might think J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter books, but you'd be revealing a woeful ignorance of Diana Wynne Jones' work of the last 25 years. Don't get me wrong - the book has much to offer, & young people in particular will enjoy it. But they have in their favor a lack of experience and a lack of experienced children's bookstore personnel and/or parents to advise them. Better they might check with a children's librarian, these days! For those with less excuse, permit me to introduce them to a "contemporary" of Rowling's, namely Diana Wynne Jones. The similarity of these two British authors' works is, to my mind, suspicious and unforgiveable. (To be sure, I am agrieved in part because, as a bookseller and librarian myself, I have been kids on to DWJ work now for over 20 years, & also dismayed when I encounter other professionals who are unaware of her work. Unconscionable, I say.) DWJ is still writing exciting, witty, intelligent fiction for young minds (age indiscriminate). Back in 1974, she began publishing her work in Great Britain through Greenwillow Books, & here in the States through Alfred A. Knopf & Bullseye. Such novels as *Witch Week*, *Charmed Life*, and *The Lives of Christopher Chant* (especially!) are so similar as to make it appear Rowling (or esecially her Johnny-Come-Lately admirers) are ripping off Jones' work. It's almost as if "The Muggles" who are always scheming & yet bumbling to keep certain things hidden are at work here in the world of (children's) books. Jones' books are far more hilariously funny, inventive, charming & gripping, exciting & involving excursions into fantasy... Read them, if you want to see how it's really been done by a master wordsmith. Better yet, just read them & do yourself a favor.
Rating: Summary: What is there not to like? Review: Magic. fantasy, excitement. suspense. Makes me feel like a kid again! a 52-year old Mom!
Rating: Summary: Many suprises, suspensful plot.Hagrid is hilarious. Review: Many of the elemants of these books remind me of Madline L'engle, and yes,Roahld Dahl.I am a very good reader, for a 11 year old[Animal Farm, anyone? Harrys aunt and uncle remind me of Matildas parents. My first book I received while begging my mom for Marlfox,a Redwall book[and a very worthy series in itself]She bought me Harry Potter. That night,I read two long books, and nearlly finished Harry Potter.I'm rereading it.Much childrens humoreus books fall rather flat, and have very shalow humor.Harry Potter is intelligent, and funny.Look,I diden't just hear something, and jump on the bandwagon.I enjoyed this book. A warning to [How shall I put this?]people with heavy christen morals:this is not your book. The fantsy is light hearted, but, sadly many people have no imagnation, sense of humor,or accepabilty. I reccomend this book whole heartdly.
Rating: Summary: Be not afraid...this is a Super Fiction! Review: Many of these reviews are concerned with the supernatural content of this series. Our family loves fiction and that is what this is. A well written FICTION! Many of Harry's "issues" are difficult to swallow but like all children he discovers a coping mechanism. It is filled with excitment and challenges to overcome. Harry finds strength of character. I will continue to read these sories in during our Family time and encourage others to do the same.
Rating: Summary: A Fantastic Book of Magic and Friendship Review: Many people have said things about Harry Potter that would make adults discourage their children from reading them. I disagree with this. The Harry Potter books are books of magic, friendship and loyalty. They made me want to sit down and read them over and over again. I would highly recommend reading the Harry Potter books.
