At first, i was very impressed. Then, i couldn't put the book down untill i had finished it and I was wanting to read another one. I hope that Harry will turn Dudly into a dreadful thing that summer. Let's hear some more of this excelent writing. Somehow, please release the newest book, as soon as possible.
Rating: Summary: A great book. I love it. Review: Last fall, when one of my friends told me about this book, I wasn't sure if I would like it. So, I got it from our classroom library, and I loved it! A friend's aunt lives in the UK, and she sent him the Chamber of Secrets and I begged him to let me read it. All of those people who say this book is bad for children because it talks about witchcraft and wizardry are overre-acting. I'm a Catholic, and my mom thinks this is a great book. there's nothing wrong about some magic. I also like this book because it is so exciting. you have to read it!
Rating: Summary: Harry Potter: A New Hero is In Town! Review: Last summer, I saw Oprah show this book on TV and I thought, "Oh look, another Kiddy Book." Guess what; I was wrong. When i ordered the book off of Amazon, I put it on rush delivery so I could take it on vacation with me. I started in the car at around 5:00 at night, and then, but 8:00, i had it finished. It was THAT GOOD. I couldn't believe it! Harry and his relatives, Vernon, Petunia, and Dudley Dursley, are the worst bunch of people you would meet. Harry learns of a world, that he never knew existed. It includes witches, wizards, giants and Quidditch; a wizard sport. With Lord Voldemort out of power, nothing cam go wrong, right? Wrong again. To learn more about what happens, read the very 1st HARRY POTTER book in the Series of 7. After that, read the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th books! trust me, watch out Batman and Superman, a new hero named Harry Potter is in town!
Rating: Summary: Unbelieveable! Review: Let me say this: I did not want to read this book because of it being a kids book. I thought it would be silly. Well when the 4th book in the series came out it was unbelieveable the attantion it got. so I thought maybe I'll read the first one and see what its like. It was great, I couldent believe it. The story line, the characters, the plot. All of it was great. Everyone should read this book even if you dont think you will like it.
Rating: Summary: Whoa!!!!!!!! Review: Let me start this out by saying I don't like Fantasy books. I also don't read children's literature much at all. However I got interested in this series because of the phenomenon of the author going from welfare (in Britain they call it the dole) to richer than the Queen in five years. Really, she did. Also, I'm an advocate of teaching children to read, and was a childhood bookworm and congenital nerd myself. When I saw a boy about 10 sitting in his mom's grocery cart reading a Harry Potter book, I knew I had to find out what all the fuss was about, and so I read the first book in the series. I suspect I'll be reading more.OK, for those who've been on the dark side of the moon for the last half-decade, Harry Potter is the orphaned nephew who lives with the Dursleys, residing under their stairs in a cupboard, constantly pursued by their stupid bully son Dudley. One day he recieves an invitation to go to school, and the school is no ordinary one, it's one for wizards. Harry of course is completely dumfounded (there are wizards?!?) but it's an escape from Dudley, so he goes. When he leaves on his journey, everything changes, and he turns out to have magical powers. The school is set up like a normal one, except the courses are in things like potions and flying. There is of course an adventure, part mystery, to darken the plot and give it suspense. It's amazing how good this book is, given that there's nothing that original here. The Dursleys are stereotypically mean to Harry and spoil Dudley shamelessly, no surprises here. They're fun to read about, however, and the rest of the book is the same. The mystery isn't that complex or involved, and there's nothing that surprising about it, but it's well-done and wonderfully contrived, and you enjoy it in spite of yourself. I think this book pretty much draws you to the sequel, and frankly I think J.K. Rowling deserves every penny, even if she is richer than the Queen.
Rating: Summary: Not my cup of tea.... Review: Let me tell you about why I DON'T like Harry Potter. I'll start off by saying that the books themselves are actually OK. I'm glad to see that it gets kids reading and I have tremendous respect for JK Rowling, who used as much of her God given talent that she had, to write herself out of poverty to being the riches author in the history of literature. Good for her. But I think coporate america has had a lot to do with why I don't like this series. 1. First of all I'm just plain sick of hearing about Harry Potter. I am sick of all the TV commercials, the merchandise, the fact that no matter where I go or what I do, I can't stop hearing about him. I'm sick of seeing Harry Potter spin offs, rip offs and knock offs. In short, I'm sick of the medias neverending attempt to promote him and am sick of seeing his face on mugs, T shirts and so forth whereever I go. I wish they would just lay off a bit so that the fans who like him could get what they want and those who aren't quite as interested wouldn't feel overwhelmed by the need to join the mayhem. 2. Secondly ,and my most strongest point, is that I'm not too proud of the fact that so many kids look up to him as a 'role model'. Now don't misunderstand, I can see WHY kids like him. They like him because he was an orphan child who overcame a bad childhood, awful step parents and so forth and ended up becoming a hero in the very end. Plus they like the adventure too. What's so sad about that is that they are hailing a fictional character as their hero and role model and not somebody in real life, like their parents, relatives or anybody else who could not only inspire them to be something in this world but help them to. Alas, it's sad that most people in this world don't fit the definition of a hero. So instead of believing in themselves they have a fictional boy wizard to do it for them, instead of growing up to be somebody special in life we have millions of people who want to grow up to become 'wizards' and go around casting 'spells' in hopes that their problems will 'magically' go away. I'm sick of seeing kids fight over Harry Potter toys and dressing up in glasses and a dark robe and making fake scars on their faces or standing out in the freezing cold to get the latest book, when you know they'll never run out. You see, Harry Potter to me is nothing more than a Cinderella story. We forget that the moral of Cinderella is that people can love us just the way we are. So please corporate america, give it a rest will ya!.
Rating: Summary: Crazy book, crazy review Review: Let me tell you one thing about Harry potter he's a crazy dude. his adventures are insane and out of control he breaks all the rules, and never gets in trouble. thats cool i mean if i never got in trouble. overall it was a god book.
Rating: Summary: Not Just For Kids Review: Like another reviewer I'm upset that this book is geared towards kids. This book is amazing. Derivitive yes. But nonetheless it stands on its own merit. For everyone who's ever felt that they didn't fit in this book inspires hope. Not only that it upholds that eternal addage that if you have faith in yourself you can succeed. The last children's book that was this creative was "Alice in Wonderland". Cheers to you Ms. Rowling.
Rating: Summary: Startling a book can sweep you off your feet, isn't it? Review: Like great authors of old like J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S Lewis, and Susan Cooper, J.K Rowling has the gift of creating a world that can startle you, amaze you, and just simply sweep you off your feet and into that other world. A gift that not many writers (beginning writers, for that matter) can accomplish. Yet, through many years in the process, she has definitely come off a triumphant road: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is one thrilling and enchanting fairy tale. Young orphan Harry Potter has been living with his horrible aunt, uncle, and cousin for ten miserable years. He has never gotten a birthday party and his room is a tiny cupboard under the stairs. When his eleventh birthday nears, Harry isn't expecting much. What he gets is something spectacular. He finds out that he is the son of a witch and wizard, and after being saved by a warm-hearted giant called Hagrid, Harry is invited to attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to tap into his inner magic skills. At wizard school, Harry finds out that from classes to meals, that magic is around every corner. There he meets Ron Weasley, a freckle-faced boy from a whole family of wizards, and clever-witch Hermione Granger. As the three of them try to succeed at Hogwarts, they also must save the school from a secret plot possibly from the killer of Harry's parents. Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is brewing of magical invention and carefully drawn-out characters. Title character Harry Potter is one many readers can relate to: Scared and nervous in a completely magical world full of evil and danger. I'm pretty sure many people have been in a few of Harry's situations. The initial interaction with the vivid characters is, in my opinion, the highlight of J.K Rowling's series. The ways Harry and Ron joke about many situations, and how Hermione reacts to them. Being a fantasy novel, the book is chock-full of strange inventions and many magical creatures. The books that follow this are even filled with more innovative creations, but in this first installment, J.K Rowling cleverly creates creatures and monsters. From the goblins of Gringotts Wizard Bank to the wise centuars, Rowling gives each of these beasts electrifying dialogue and plenty of character. At a mere 300 pages, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone leaves you satisfied enough and hungry for more. I definitely cannot wait for the fifth book to be released June 2003 and also cannot wait for the last installment. I completely recommend this novel to anyone of any age. It really is something where you can believe the hype.
Rating: Summary: longer than usual Review: Like most of the other comments I am going to tell you that Harry Potter is the best book ever. Everyone young and old that I've know love the series that Ms.Rowling is beginning to make. The people who don't have got to have a better reason than that she is so called prejudice of fat people, or that she is "copying" someone else. For one thing Dudley has to be fat in some parts of the book for obvious reasons, and the Fat Lady definatily does not mind being called the Fat Lady, Dumbledore(my favorite character) even calls her that. This book has such a water-tight plot that it could not possibly be copyed. SUMMARY OF FIRST BOOK: Harry Potter was just a miserable boy for 10 years straight years at his aunt, uncle, and cousins house. On Harry's 11th birthday a giant named Hagrid whisked Potter away from his horrible life and brought him to a school called Hogwarts, the best school of witchcraft and wizardry. When Harry gets there he uncovers his mysterious past, the reason why he got landed with the Dursleys(his aunt, uncle, and cousin). While he is there he plays quidditch, raises a dragon, and comes face to face with his worst enemy. Read the book and become enchanted.
