Rating: Summary: Great Read Review: J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is a wonderful read. Fun for all ages, it is easy enough for my 12 year-old sister and her friends to read, yet fun for my 36 year-old cousin to read as well. Much like the TV shows we watch as children, Harry Potter can be enjoyed by all, for the content as well as for the simplicity. Another reviewer, burcuka from Greenbelt, MD, said, "...that one of the great things about this book is that everyone can read and enjoy it." As an avid reader, some people might think that knowing that younger kids can read and understand this, might cause me to not read this novel, however, I find that being able to discuss books, this one in especially, to be a wonderfully rewarding thing. This book has given my sister and I a little common ground, which for us is hard to find. Harry is the perfect example of how you can overcome any background, be it poverty, abuse, or just being teased on the play ground as a child. Harry encounters trouble from the time he is born; yet he works with his friends to overcome each problem that arises. This helps to teach all of us that no matter how hard we may think our life is, we can still overcome all the problems and adversity that arise in normal life.
Rating: Summary: Harry Potter - interesting, exciting, and very clever! Review: J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is about a young boy who discovers he is a wizard and the responsibilities and adventures that come along with it. This exciting fantasy will take you back to your childhood memories and keep you enthralled in its words. For nearly ten years Harry had been living an ordinary life with his Aunt, Uncle, and spoiled cousin. His parents died when he was very young and he has only recently found out his history. Harry's life starts to change when he is invited to a wonderful place that he could only dream of, Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry, being the only wizard to survive the evil powers of Voldemort, is marked with a lightning scar on his forehead. He is known by all wizards and possesses extraordinary gifts. At Hogwarts he discovers not only his amazing magical powers, but also the power of friendship. He is encountered with a challenge that has been waiting for him in this strange and exciting place. The vivid way J.K. Rowling tells the story and how she makes the characters come to life made me feel like I knew them personally. Rowling expresses a continuous theme of good overcoming evil with many other literary elements intertwined throughout the novel. She includes imagery, personification, and similes to make her writing more exciting and imaginative. Rowling's clever writing style was very appealing and brought humor to the story. I disagree with the belief of some "religious" people who condone this novel because of its use of magic. There is no talk of Satan or use of magic for evil doings. I find nothing wrong in letting children read harmless fantasies. If anything it will improve their imagination. This was one of the most exciting, clever, and imaginative books I've ever read and I enjoyed every second of it. I would recommend this book to anyone. Rowling's interesting writing style makes the book even more interesting and I plan to look into other novels writing by J.K. Rowling
Rating: Summary: The Return of the GREAT Children's Novel Review: J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series combines the best elements of classical children's literature--fun, fantasy, a gripping storyline, colorful characters, and school-time drama--with a MODERN, witty flair. Her wry sense of humor and deep understanding of peer dynamics also makes these stories relevant to a wide age range. Open the book and embark on an adventure that never seems to end!
Rating: Summary: Rowling Hits It Big Review: J.K. Rowling's, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone is a funny and mysterious fantasy book. The New York Times has it on their best seller list. It's about a young boy named Harry Potter, growing up with his horrible relatives the Dursleys. On his eleventh birthday, Harry Potter finds out he is a wizard and goes off to Hogwart's School of Witchcraft and Wizardry to become a wizard. Harry Potter is a great book for all ages, because J.K. Rowling uses language that is easy to understand. It's a super book to read.
Rating: Summary: A Gift for Readers of All Ages Review: J.K. Rowlings has revived the printed word for children with her Harry Potter series of books. Based on an eleven year-old orphan, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" hearkens back to the days of Madeleine L'Engle's "Wrinkle in Time" series. Fundamentalists have sporadically criticized the Harry Potter series of books, claiming that details of witchcraft and fantasy will corrupt our children. Such criticisms are nonsense. Harry Potter, and all stories surrounding this character, are as crystal clear in their metaphors of the values of Good vs. the downfall of Evil as any of C.S. Lewis' more "religiously accepted" tales. Religious fundamentalists and non-fundamentalists alike should breathe a sigh of relief when their child shows an interest in reading one of J.K. Rowling's books about young Harry Potter. The alternatives - violent games, destructive movies and cheap television shows - are much less agreeable. And adults who worry that this book may not be appropriate for their child are highly encouraged to read it themselves. Like many great young adult writers before her, Rowling writes with a quality that is also gripping for an older audience.
Rating: Summary: Cleverly written book Review: J.K. Rowlings has written a clever mix of all my favourite school girl stories ( The St.Clare's/Mallory Towers series of Enid Blyton), hints of Tolkien, C.S.Lewis, and even Roald Dahl. It's a pity that not many kids seem to read these authors in these days, but better that they fall for Harry Potter than not live in a book-induced haze of sorts at all.( What a wonderful feeling, at any age!) She has effectively replaced some of the more dated concepts with a veneer of modern references and even political correctness ( boy with dreadlocks, Parvati Patil(! ) etc., etc.) But the basic appeal of the story remains the same as many great stories -- The triumph of the under-dog.
Rating: Summary: An Instant Classic Review: J.K.Rowlings has done it. She made an entire society that co-exists with the one that we live in without the people of the "mugle" society not knowing. It makes you wonder whether this is fiction !
Rating: Summary: This book is incredibily AWESOME Review: Jack thinks that Dudley is quite a character because he is such a snob. On the other hand, Harry Potter, Hermione and Ron are much better...They have more adventures. Harry is incredibly adventurous. Hermione is one heck of a smarty-pants. Ron is the runt of his family and doesn't get the credit he deserves. This book is full of adventures...and gives all the characters a chance to star. AT the end of every chapter there was always something that puzzled you and made you want to keep reading. Our brother GRant liked Harrybecause he was the star of all the adventures. Grant liked Ron because he was always explaining what everything could do. Hermione is pretty smart about magic. Grant found the book very exciting. It was my favorite book I ever read.
