Rating: Summary: A 'Harry' Review Review: In J.K. Rowling's, Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone, Rowling creates such as story that it will make readers everywhere applaud such a wonderful adventure. Rowling uses irony in many places throughout the book. Irony is the discrepancy between appearances and reality. Also, Rowling makes the story contain so many different dilemmas, adventures, and much more. Rowling also paints a clear picture of the story without even going into much detail. This book should be read by anyone, no matter how old or how young you are. Rowling has produced a novel that will leave the reader wanting more. Throughout the book Rowling uses different forms of irony to intrigue the reader. Situational irony is used nearly every time the page is turned. Harry and his friends do the exact opposite of what the reader would expect in almost all situations. For instance, Harry and his friends get in trouble countless numbers of times for breaking many of Hogwarts' (School of Wizards and Witches) rules, but they still go on adventuring as they please after nearly being expelled. Dramatic irony is used throughout the book too. In his first year at school, Harry attempts to meet an unknown visitor on top of a tower at midnight to give this person a dragon that is not allowed at school. Obviously, the reader knows how risky the situation is and would never think about doing anything like that. Rowling uses irony constantly in her story, both dramatic and situational. Rowling creates her story pleasing the reader with adventure and suspense. It starts out with Harry living with his aunt, uncle, and cousin. Then, all of a sudden he is receiving letters telling him to go to Hogwarts and learn magic. The adventure of Harry and his life, from one moment living in the Muggle world (ordinary life), to studying self-defense spells against the Dark Arts and other types of magic. The story also contains suspense in nearly every situation. Each time the reader opens the book, (s)he starts to read and starts to learn many things about Harry's life and wonders what will he do next. For these reasons, Rowling generates a wonderful book filled with suspense and adventure. Rowling has imagined a story that charms all. Rowling does this through her various uses of irony in its many different forms. Rowling also satisfies the reader through the adventure and suspense she uses in her story. All in all, J.K. Rowling's, Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone, is one of the best stories you will ever read in your life.
Rating: Summary: we love Harry Review: In J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone, Harry is a boy that has been abused for all of his life, and who soon finds out that he is someone special. He is famous in another world, a world of magic. When Harry is eleven years old he recieves a letter from Hogwarts, a school where children learn to become wizards, and so begins his first year at Hogwarts. But Harry is haunted by his horrible past, and so his first year is full of surprises. J.K. Rowlings writes with fun and satifactory in mind. She creates very addictive reading, and very creative well thought out events and characters. Adults and children will all love reading this book. It truly brings the fantasy world to life as well as the kid inside us all.
Rating: Summary: Surprisingly original Review: In most cases, five stars are given to fantasy and sci-fi books because the reader is unfamilar to this new world and is completely immersed into a world unknown to them, and they like it! Experienced fantasy readers are always looking with hungry eyes for another series that is completely new. Tolkien-being the father of fantasy-brought readers into a world of humor, remorse, frightening wizards, and adventure that sets the reader's heart to a new pace. Although many new "original" fantasy series have been wrought since then, none have strayed to far from Father Tree. But, Rowling has given a rather new perspective to fantasy. A look through magic and wizardary and witchary through the eyes of preteens. A wonderful and humor-filled look into the world of fantasy. There isn't much I can say that wouldn't give away this compelling story. I wasn't expecting much from J.K. Rowling, so I guess an average story would have blown me away; but she gives you a wonderful read, that most anyone can enjoy. I plan on reading the others, but not right yet. It was refreshing to get back to some fantasy. Enjoy your reading.
Rating: Summary: a sevbenth grader speaks Review: In my opinion and the opinion of must of the other people in my seventh grade class the book "Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone" was a very good book. I was on the edge of my seat when I was reading it and during the climax I could have sworn my hair stood on end! Besides the suspense I also enjoyed how interesting it was with the made-up words and interesting twists. Over all, I love the book and would recommend it to anyone that wants to be intrigued to read a great book.
Rating: Summary: He gives us the big dream. Review: In my opinion, this is the most impressive, and also unforgettable book that I have read this semester, here at International School Bangkok. I think this book is the story for all people from little kids to old people. This story is about a boy who is a son of a really famous wizard and his wife, and his adventure in the magic world. Although it is Fantasy, it gives you very realistic feelings of the characters. In my opinion, Harry is really strong and patient and has a pure heart and always tells people the truth for everything. I guess everyone who read Harry Potterfs story respects him, and may also be interested in him with envy because everyone wants to be like Harry Potter. As you may know, the theme of this story is that you can do anything if you really want to do it or have to do it, so donft give up and try your best until your dream becomes true. I chose this story to read this semester because the story of Harry Potter is really famous, and also translated in a lot of different languages. If you cannot understand in English, you would be able to read in your native language, and I suppose that this is a really big reason why Harry Potter is so well known. I want everyone to read this story, have a good time with a very incredible dream of being a wizard or a witch!
Rating: Summary: This is a great book! Review: In order for kids to be hooked to Harry Potter they had to read the original and this one was great.I had not heard that much about Harry Potter until suddenly everyone stated talking about it. So, I decided to take a peek at it so I rented it from a library and I kept reading for a couple of chapters and thought it was great and interesting in the way that it was written. So I bought the book from Amazon.com. Soon, I got done with the book and I said that this book was going to be a hit and by that time it already was. So read the magic that started all the craze. Read the book that started the series. Read the book that introduced the world to a different world. Read Harry Potter and The Sorcerrer's Stone. Book 1 of 4.
Rating: Summary: Hooked on Harry/Rowlings Review: In popmusic/boyband-world we call ourselves "mature fans". I don't know if there's such a thing in Harry-Potter-world but if there is, then consider me one of them. I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone because I know I will have to watch the movie coming out in November. It's been a habit of mine to read the book version first before watching the movie (which often leads me to conclude they should have left the darn thing as a book). Anyway, by chapter two of this first book, I was hooked. In a span of two weeks, I finished three and am finishing the fourth. Sorcerer's Stone is my favorite so far, and Prisoner of Azkaban is by far, the saddest one. Parents - you should read it so you can experience the magic yourselves. The words, the story, the idea is simple and fantastic enough to hold a child's interest. But it's sophisticated enough to excite the older readers. I found myself longing for more each time I finish a book. I'm almost done with the Goblet of Fire. Can I stand the suspense of waiting for the fifth book? And when I finish that one - how long must I wait til the sixth and the sevent book? And after the seventh, what next???
Rating: Summary: Fun reading Review: In reaction to all of the hype, I had to check out this book. I was pleastantly surprised! Rowling writing keeps the interest of her readers, no matter what their age. And, in response to parents no wanting their kids reading something that is a porponant of wizardry, then why did my parents and my parents parents le us read Tolkien or C.S. Lewis Narnia books. Just read it and enjoy it for what it is, a fun adventure that opens up the imaginations of kids of all ages!
Rating: Summary: Funatastic Review: In response to Stephen from Johnston, IA USA, I completely agree with his opinions of Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone. J.K. Rowling does a magical job of making this book an enjoyable read. Harry Potter is a young boy secluded from his past and his nature of being, protected from all that had happened in his childhood days by his greedy aunt and uncle. When he received in the mail for the first time a letter addressed to him, he was surprised to see that he had been admitted to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. He was stunned to find out that he himself was a wizard. After a long explanation of the destiny of his parents, he found out that he was famous in the wizard world for defeating a great wizard gone bad. This was excellent news, except for the fact that You-Know-Who was to come back for him in his school of magic. Why and how you ask? You will have to read the book to find out! Rowling's purpose of this book is to engage his readers in words of fun and games. You aren't required to study the plot, you don't ever have to stop and look up the definition of a word, and you don't ever have to go back and re-read to fully understand what is going on. It is a relaxing book that you can just sit back and enjoy, possibly in one sitting. This definitely attracts readers of all kinds. Experienced readers who need a break from seriousness, and young readers who love simple stories. In fact I believe that the only word I had problems with were the terms he made up as part of the story, such as Muggle. Rowling's use of description of characters is just what a reader needs to enjoy a fun book. They are everywhere from magical, to greedy, to annoying to evil. There is the typical girl who protests to her friends mischief. There is the bad guy and there is the good guy. All supported by a variety of other characters. I supposed that the most popular character in the story is Voldemort, for the simple fact that you don't ever meat him until the end of the book. Until that point, you want to keep reading to find out who he is. In a summary sentence, I would give this book two thumbs up and say that it is as refreshing as a cold glass of lemonade on a hot summers day. You go Mrs. Rowling!!!
Rating: Summary: Dale's Performance Extraordinary Review: In reviewing the cassette edition earlier, I neglected to mention the incredible performance of Mr. Dale - which is what prompted me to review the edition in the first place! While encouraging kids to read is, of course, hugely important, the performance by Mr. Dale is so entertaining that it warrants purchasing BOTH the book and the cassette editions for your children. The many characters are easily identifiable with Mr. Dale's wide range of British/Scottish accents, and they are brought to life by his treatment. As well, Americans will appreciate hearing the proper pronounciation of "Her-MY-oh-nee" (not "Hermy-WON") and other British names. I'm very impressed with the quality of the performance and am anxious to purchase other cassette editions of the series.
