Rating: Summary: Regressed back to my childhood... Review: I'm a busy 34-year-old working male who used to love to read books while growing up. By the time I was 12, I had passed the Hardy Boys books and was reading adult novels. When I entered the working world after graduating high school, it seem that I could never find a book that would truly make me escape from my fast-paced world. After a little more than a decade, I heard about Harry Potter series and decided to purchase the first story in paperback. Wow! I actually read it in 2 days! Needless to say, I was thrilled when I got the trilogy hardcover books as a gift this past Christmas! Of course, I read the other 2 books in less than a week. I really felt that I was transported from the present to my childhood. It was one of the best feelings I ever had, and I am looking forward to the 4th book.
Rating: Summary: Best book I've read all summer... Review: I'm a college student and I couldn't put Harry Potter down! The worst thing about the book was that it had to end - as soon as it did I reached for the sequel and kept going. Now I'm counting days until the release of the third. I haven't been so captivated by a story in a long time...it's left me craving more, more, more!
Rating: Summary: Sheer Delight Review: I'm a good dozen years or so above the target audience, and my tastes run more to serious diplomatic and military history than fantasy, and I've been known to read Dostoyevsky for fun. Nevertheless, more out of curiosity than anything else, I bought HP and the Sorcerer's Stone and started reading it. To my surprise, I was absolutely entranced. I won't bother with a description of Hogwarts, the Dursleys, the Weasleys, Hermione, or even Quidditch. Once I started reading, I didn't want to put the book down, and finished it in a matter of hours. Not since Orson Scott Card's "Enders Game" when I was about 10 had another book captivated me so much. I'm currently working my way through the other books, anticipating Harry's next adventure and hoping this magical series doesn't turn into a forum for the exposition of Rowling's religious beliefs the way the Ender books, Narnia, and the Dune series became the way Card, Lewis, and Herbert did it.
Rating: Summary: Engaging Page-Turner, but Not a Classic Review: I'm a Johnny-Come-Lately to the Harry Potter bandwagon and began to read the opening book in the series with much anticipation. I thought the book was indeed fast-paced and had a balanced plot with all of the facets coming together in a satisfying way.
However, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone didn't blow my mind. I thought it was good, but not unbelievably good. The books I read by Lois Lenski, Cynthia Voigt, and Judy Blume were as fresh, vigorous, and funny as this Harry Potter book, and in my opinion, more so. With the remainder of the series to read, I hope I do fall in love with the series like many adults and children have. Incidentally, I would love to see Ms. Rowling feature a female protagonist in her next series.
Rating: Summary: older reader Review: I'm a parent of a 12 and 4 year old. I saw the movie listing and wanted to read the book first after years of hype about "Harry Potter", so I bought a paperback for my oldest daughter. I started the book in the morning and finished it that night. To put it simply it was like going back into childhood and just reading a good fairy tale. That's it. You shouldn't put more into it than that. Just a well written (although I had to keep the odd sounding names straight)fairy tale that opens your imagination like it should.
Rating: Summary: Picking Up This Book May Result In You Never Putting It Down Review: I'm a reader, and I've always been a reader, so I was happy to give J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series a try. My mom bought me Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone at a book fair she was volunteering at, and I picked it up and couldn't put it down until I'd finished it (much like the title of my review). Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone is an imaginative, charming, complex (but easy to follow) novel that you'll love. It has an awesome plot, believable characters, and a twist that you'll never guess. The book is about an eleven-year-boy named Harry Potter, who has lived all of his life with his mean aunt and uncle, because his parents died. He's treated like a piece of dirt at home, and he is amazed when he finds out he is really a wizard. He attends Hogwarts, a wizarding school, grateful to get away from home. He finds a magical world that he has been awaiting him all his life . . . and he finds out he is famous for something he can't even remember. As the story progresses, Harry finds out that a specieal stone is hidden somewhere inside Hogwarts. I don't want to spoil the surprise, you'll have to read the book yourself. These books are perfect for anyone for anyone. I've had friends that were allergic to books until they discovered Harry Potter. It doesn't end with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: if you like the first book half as much as I do, you'll have to read Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, and Harry Potter and the Doomspell Tournament.
Rating: Summary: Harvard Sophomore who's Addicted to the Harry Potter Books Review: I'm a sophomore at Harvard and saw this book on the Rosie O'Donnell show and thought it would be cute - I am now utterly addicted to the Harry Potter books. The book is written intelligently and humorously so that adults can enjoy it, but the basic story line is simple enough for young children. Buy this book, then buy the next two!!!!
Rating: Summary: Fabulous! Review: I'm about to turn 40 and have no children but have read many reviews on this book, and the others in the series. Hearing about children giving up some television and computer game time to read this book--well I had to see for myself what all the excitement was for! Half way into this book I rushed out and bought the other two, not wanting to miss a heartbeat of the story. The story of a little boy without parents and left with family that doesn't act like family, and is horrified with his capabilities. This book is a great adventure story to escape into and come out better for. A story about friendships, good and evil and struggles of right and wrong in all of us. This story really reminded me of C.S. Lewis' The Chronicles of Narnia series(which I also highly recommend). The difference is, as a child I adored the same fascinating imaginings and stories of adventure. As an adult I re-read that series and for the first time saw the Christian teachings I'd missed the first time. If you're not comfortable with that, you won't find it in R.J. Rawling's novels to find later! Just a wonderful adventure with characters you'll love to boo and others you take to heart! ENJOY!
Rating: Summary: Very Good Book! Review: I'm Alex. This book was confusing at first, but now I understand. J.K. Rowling is a very imaginative & also creative author. I certainly recommend this book to all! This book gives about everything you need to know about the other books! Read this first!!
Rating: Summary: New member of the club Review: I'm an adult who ordered this book to find out what all the fuss was about. Five minutes into it I ordered the next three. This is the most enjoyable, absorbing book I've read in years - and yes I read a lot. It reminds me of everything I loved when I was a kid. The characters, dialogue, settings and plots are delightful - nothing could be improved upon. These are simply the best children's books ever written.
