Rating: Summary: Why the hype? It's sometimes enchanting but never ingenious Review: I'm a 29 year-old who was somewhat disappointed in the book. I had hoped it would rekindle the magic that the Chronicles of Narnia had made when I was in junior high. The story starts out a little disjointed, setting up the Cinderella-like premise of the early life of the protagonist, Harry Potter. A coherent story finally begins about a third of the way through. We enter J. K. Rowling's world of wizards, witches, trolls, unicorns, ghosts, gobblins, centaurs etc. It is an enchanting world indeed, but the story does not enfold neatly and logically. Loose ends are tied up a little sloppily in the end as subplots never seem to find their place in the scheme of things. We were also introduced to two or three more characters than necessary. It seemed that the story could have been trimmed to its essentials. I did not get the sense that J. K. Rowling is the genius implied by the hype of the series. Despite its faults, I found the story to be entertaining and will consisder reading the other books in the series. Perhaps I should also re-read the Chronicles of Narnia as a reference to gage how I think a young adult will view the Potter series. The book is 309 pages long with print slightly larger than in novels.
Rating: Summary: A muggle's five-star review Review: I'm a 31-year-old woman with no children and initially had no interest in reading the Harry Potter series. My sister, however, read this book and finally persuaded me to read it as well. I'm so glad that I did! True, the basic Cinderella-storyline has been done before, but never quite like this. J.K. Rowling is gifted with an imagination that transports the reader, whether 15 or 50, to a fantasyland called Hogwarts. The whimsy that Rowling conveys in the smallest detail (like trading cards with moving photographs) makes this an outstanding read. And the common theme of good over evil, with the underdog prevailing, is a great message for kids. Makes me wish I weren't a muggle!
Rating: Summary: FANTASTIC! Review: I'm a 34-year-old kid at heart, and I absolutely loved this book! Readers of all ages will enjoy the entire series. I am sad to hear about parents who won't let their children read these books because of the supernatural nature. The genre is fantasy, not reality, so get over it! I taught high school English, and even teenagers told me how their parents wouldn't allow them to read it! What a way to dash children's desire to read, and no wonder our students' reading scores are dropping! Reading this book gave me hours of pleasure and kept me wanting more! Kudos to J.K. Rowling!
Rating: Summary: Make that 50 stars Review: I'm a 34-yr old reader who is a terrible snob about adult fiction - I picked this up on a business trip and fell in love. Rowling's magic world is wonderfully invented and her characters are delightful. I can't wait until my children are old enough for this series. Easily the best book I've read this year, leaving Shreve, Roth, Pirsig, etc. in the dust.
Rating: Summary: Great fun! Review: I'm a 38 year old Mom, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and also the sequel, ...Chamber of Secrets. They are imaginative, funny, pleasant stories, with very little seriously frightening or unpleasant content, which in my opinion, makes them great books, especially for children. I read quite a number of the other reviews, especially those who gave less than 5 stars -- those reviewers generally wanted more serious content. I for one am glad that there is actually something on the market for kids that doesn't include a lot of fear, violence, etc. I look forward to reading the next book, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkhaban.
Rating: Summary: Harry Potter and the Sourcerer's Stone Review: I'm a 52 year old who has a passion for reading, a passion for children and now an inescapable passion for Harry Potter. Rowling's successful series is proof that character and imagination coupled with wit and inspirational wisdom can capture the child in all of us. Yes,Yes, I too, am "Wild about Harry!"
Rating: Summary: A marvelous fantasy! Review: I'm a 75-yr. old grandmother who's interested in children's books. I just read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and was captivated by it. What a wonderfully imaginative story! I think it will be a classic down through the years, on a par with Alice in Wonderland and on a more juvenile level with Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.
Rating: Summary: Superb audio adaptation Review: I'm a big fan of audio books and this is probably one of the best. Jim Dale's ability to bring to life the many characters in this book is amazing. This recording was nominated for a Grammy award. I have given this audio book to my nephews and they love it. Do not miss the opportunity to hear this story read aloud.
Rating: Summary: Am I the only person who DIDN'T like this book? Review: I'm a big fan of science fiction and fantasy but this book doesn't hold a candle to "The Hobbit" or Anne McCaffrey's series. It's written like a Saturday morning adventure show. I can really imagine the movie....but literature, it's not.
