Rating: Summary: Harry Potter vs. Luke Skywalker Review: Although I thoroughly enjoyed the book, I did find some interesting parallels. Harry grows up not knowing of his heritage and his powers as does Luke Skywalker. Harry is taken to a school of wizardry to learn his craft and fulfill his destiny, just as Luke is taken to be schooled as a master Jedi. They are both sons of the famous and most powerful of their kind. They both form close bonds with their instructor-Obi Wan Kenobi and Professor Dumbledor. Hagrid reminds me of Chubakka. Ron is Harry's sidekick, over shadowed by his family name. Ron and Han (Solo) have similar names and similar feelings of inferiority. Both Harry and Luke find a female character that at first they do not like (Princess Leah/Hermione). And lastly, both are fighting against evil characters who were once great, but have turned to the "Dark Side" (Darth Vador/Voldemort). It's really the same story in a different setting. Instead of being set in outer space and dealing with aliens, Harry's world of wizardry is in some other parallel dimension and he must deal with odd mythical creatures. I wonder if anyone else saw the similarity.
Rating: Summary: Hagrid and Muggles and Magic...oh my! Review: Although it's probably already been said, this masterpiece perfectly captures the magic, mystery, and uncertainty of a child's world. Harry is the champion of underdogs who becomes a hero. He is loyal, humble, and honest although his early life was one of cruelty and indifference. His friends plot, scheme, and feast upon Every Flavour Beans while using their wits and magical powers to narrowly escape danger and disaster.Rowling cleverly depicts the boorish father and mother who dote upon their rather unintelligent and spiteful son Dudley but who basically deny the existence of Harry. A magical read for all ages. Although the book is currently banned in some places, at least children are putting down the controllers for their Nintendos or Segas or computers and picking up a real book--nothing virtual about that. Along with Harry children are rediscovering the magic in their everyday lives. A modern masterpiece reminiscent of Roald Dahl. 10 stars.
Rating: Summary: The Thrilling First Book Review: Although the first book in the Harry Potter series, this book is not some long, dull expositionary novel. You do find out about Harry and the wizarding world, but it is interesting in the process. If you waited to see the movie without reading the book, you're missing something spectacular. The movie leaves whole characters and events out, too, so the book will be even better.
Rating: Summary: Awesome Review: Although the first book in this wonderful series is not the best compared to the other three, it is still a marvelous read that any reader would enjoy/. The story is about young orphan Harry Potter and his life as an 11 year old boy. The book starts with a kind of confusing and slow chapter about how Harry came to live with his dreadful Aunt, Uncle, and Cousin. After Harry starts receiving mysterious letters Uncle Dursley moves everybody out to a shack in the sea. Late one night a huge giant by the name of Hagrid shows up and he takes Harry and explains that Harry is a wizard and a famous one too. He is to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he will study the art of becoming a wizard. At school he meets many new people like soon to be best friends Ron and Hermione and the horrible Draco MAlfoy. The Sorting Hat puts Harry in the Gryffindor house along with Hermione and Ron. I'll stop here. You must read this book and be in with the craze that everybody is talking about. Read this book for one of thee best Science Fiction/ Fantasy reads out there.
Rating: Summary: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone Review: Although the last two books were good, the best out of them all, the best one is the sorcerer's Stone. It was briliant of them to make a movie out of the book, first of all the graphics in the movie were alsome that is why the movie/books are the best. Rodney patterson
Rating: Summary: Back to be a child Review: Although the story is somewhat predictable, when you are reading it, you'd find yourself like a child reading a fiction ten or twenty years ago, totally escaped from the cruel "adult" world, nothing to worry about.
Rating: Summary: Magically Enchanting Review: Althought Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone began a little too much like James and the Giant Peach, with poor little baby Harry being forced to live with his abusive, aunt, uncle, and cousin, Dudley, the rest of the book makes up for what the beginning lacks in originality. I've never been quite so entertained by children's literature as I was with Harry Potter, although the question of how childlike the novel really is, remains a mystery to me. The first novel in a series of four, The Sorcerer's Stone concentrates mainly on Harry's transition from ordinary life with muggles to the extraordinary life that he lives in the magical world. Unknown to Harry, he is a herioc and mysterious entity from his birth. Harry, after long and painful years in the muggle world, is finally told that he is a key figure in a great magical victory, and he must go to Hogwarts Academy to receive proper training. On his way to the wizarding school, Harry meets his future best friends, Ron and Hermione, with whom Harry shares many a great adventures at Hogwarts. The magical adventures of Harry Potter keep the reader's attention throughout, and there is never a dull moment following the journies of the young and inexperienced Harry Potter.
