Rating: Summary: Both Thumbs Up! Review: I was pleasantly surprised when I started devouring this masterpiece. I am 46yrs. old and I loved this wonderland of fantasy. It really wasn't something I would choice for myself, but a clerk at the bookstore talked me into buying it. I could say so much about this book, but I don't want to give too much away. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series. I predict a classic in the making. I wish I had as much imagination as this author does. Harry is one of those characters that touches just about every emotion, we as humans possess. It is an excellent read.
Rating: Summary: Truly a wonderful book - for kids or adults Review: I was pretty skeptical about the whole Harry Potter thing. The fact that it had become such a popular fad was a big turn off for me, and as a student about to finish college through the University of Wisconsin, I wasn't planning on reading these "children's books" any time soon. After continuous nagging from my younger sister, (and recommendations from my parents and a friend who happened to be an English teacher), though, I finally agreed to read them. Well, I was instantly hooked. Rowling's characters are interesting and believable (contrary to what some other reviewers have said), her story interesting, her writing captivating and her attention to detail spectacular. The reader gets pulled in - immersed in a fantasy that is close enough to reality to hold some kind of truth. Before long, one can't help but to get to know the characters, and respect them, cheer them on at the edge of one's seat, and feel for them, too. The book is filled with a wondrous magic, plenty of suspense, and a fair bit of humor as well. Sometimes I found Rowlings writing to become somewhat predictable (after I'd gotten to know her style, by the middle of the second book - but I do have a knack for guessing endings), but no less exciting. Despite my predictions, there were still plenty of surprises, and I still was unable to put the books down. The books are not perfect, (as nothing ever is) but they are every bit worth the read. I highly, highly recommend this book, and the following three (all that was written at the time of this review). Don't let the hype and popularity of the series cause you to miss this these books. They are instant classics, and all the hype is because they are just that good! (Today, anything really good can make a lot of money, and therefore will get its own movie and toys, after all.) Don't forget, they ARE children's books, but I have yet to meet even an adult who doesn't like these books - except those who aren't willing to give them a try and actually read them.
Rating: Summary: Excellent ! Review: I was pulled in to Harry's world on the first page. J.K. Rowlings has a wonderful imagination. I love her clever twists and turns. This book is not just for children.. I am 38. I just ordered the sequel and can't wait. Every parent should encourage your children to read this story, they will thank you for it...
Rating: Summary: THE BEST BOOK EVER!! Review: I was pulled into reading this book because of all the hipe. Soon I figured out what they were all talking about! As soon as I started I became engrossed into it. I couldn't put it down, I finished it at one sit down! I have already ordered the rest of the books from Amazon. I HIGHLY recommend this book to any other people. If you are reading this to make a decision to buy this book, two words for you, BUY IT!!!!!
Rating: Summary: Good for all ages Review: I was pushed into this book by my wife, a 4th grade teacher, who wanted me to get into the series before going to see the movie. While used to reading mostly history and adult fiction, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the story. Although I am not head-over-heels pumped to read the next volumes, I see how kids and adults alike can lose themselves in this fantasy, far-fecthed as it may be. I disagree with those who discount Potter on religious reasons because it supposedly sensationalizes occultism. There is more than just magic in this book. Kids can learn the lessons of trust and friendship, among others, Rowling weaves into this adventure.
Rating: Summary: A fantastic book for everyone! Review: I was reading the paper when I read a review of Harry Potter and how popular it is now among children and adults. Naturally I got very intrigued and bought it right away. Once I began reading this book i couldn't stop. It's amazing!!! It is a "kids" kind of subject matter BUT that doesn't mean that adults shouldn't read it. It is very interesting and the story line pulls you into the adventure. A great book for people how enjoy reading. This is no "Pride and Prejudice" but it is certainly a fun read and should be read. And OF COURSE it is an amazing book for kids!
Rating: Summary: AWESOME! Review: I was recently recommnded by my friends to read this book so i did. And i was surprised to find ir totally awesome! It has the best plot and the characters are so cool too. hehe, but i think that they Harry and Ron should be a BIT nicer to Hermoine...
Rating: Summary: Vastly overrated for adults....for young only Review: I was recommended this book by the myriads of devoted fans. I approached this book from the standpoint that it is essentially written for younger folk. I am 34, but so many adults swore that this was a great work of fantasy that I decided to give it a try. I have a rule. If, after the first 100 pages, Im not interested enough to go on, I just stop right then and there. This book sadly falls into that category. I am very surprised that so many adults feel that this is a major work of fantasy. It pales in comparison to most writers. The writing is not all that good. The story is comical to an extent and has moments of imagination, but not nearly enough to recommend. From the youth standpoint, I can somewhat see that an interesting and comical story is developing and I am always for youth reading more and more books. It will lead to reading better and more thought provoking books eventually. For adults, however, this book has nothing to offer.
Rating: Summary: This book makes you want to keep flipping the pages... Review: I was reluctant to read one of these books at first, for I anticipated them to be at a much easier reading level than mine (I'm in 9th grade, you see) and the teacher wanted us reading books at our level. However, it seemed like everybody else in class was reading these books. I was still skeptical on reading one of them. Wizards, witches, and flying brooms weren't the sort of thing that caught my interest. Finally, on the second day of my winter break, I picked up this book and began to read it. I found the first two chapters or so to be extremely vapid, but by the third chapter, the book was taking off. As I expected, the book was at a much easier reading level than mine, but it was all for the better, as I finished it in two days (I finished it today.) The characters are well described and by the time the ninth chapter rolls along, it makes you want to keep on flipping the pages... you can't stop. You can really sympathize with Harry in the first few chapters. He lives in a cupboard under the stairs of his aunt and uncles place. Uncle Vernon is a laconic, obdurate fellow. Aunt Petunia is, well... nuts, and porky old Dudley is a callow, obsequious brat who gets whatever he pleases. Sounds like a perfect family, right? (Actually, it's more like a semi-dysfunctional family, if you ask me) I'd recommend this book to any reader who can read fluently. It's not full of grandiloquent words, the plot is far from facile, the characters seem real enough to reach right out and pull you into the book, and the use of foreshadowing is excellent. For those of you who have not read the book and are still skeptical after over 1,000 reviews, pick up a copy and read it. You'll post your own five star review soon after.
Rating: Summary: Astoundingly well written Review: I was shocked when I read the first pages of this book. I got it for Christmas and I thought about giving it to my brother because I thought it was below my reading level. I skimmed it first to see what it was like and I was blown away. I couldn't put it down! I recommend it for all ages.
