Summary: A wonderful book!
Review: I just loved this book. I have now read it three times and I am encouraging everyone I know to read it. The story is engaging and the characters come alive. Wonderful for all ages!

Summary: Why older than most muggles, yet intriguided by it!
Review: I just might be the oldest to enjoy this recently yet I just couldn't seem to put it down considering I had to see what all the hype was about. But who doesn't find the fun in a game of Quidditch and make believe? Great book and I now understand the HP addiction and can't wait untit 6/20th!

Summary: Try these other British authors too
Review: I just ordered the latest book for my Grandkids. They also love two other British writers: Terry Pratchett who writes the Discworld books (until being unseated by JK Rowling he was the best selling fantasy author in Britain, Rowling calls Pratchett 'her idol') and Philip Pullman, the author of the The Golden Compass, the 'childrens' book that Grandpa liked the best

Summary: this is not only worth two stars!!!
Review: i just read a review from a supposed 12 year old. this revieve could not have been written by a 12 year old. the writing was amazing, and i find it not near the level of a english major in college. i know that my grammer, may not be the best, but i do disagree with any person that believes this to be a horrible book. when i read this book, i could not put it down. i put the book down only when my family would pull it away. i am not the type of person to like fantasy books, i love the mystery novels. i have tried to read other fantasy books, but this is the only one i have truly enjoyed, and longed for the following book to come.

Summary: Certainly enjoyable but not worthy of the hype...
Review: I just recently completed this first volume of the Harry Potter "saga" for the second time and unfortunately my original opinion must still be maintained--though it is an enjoyable read I don't see why it garners the massive amount of praise that is heaped on it.
At the heart of the story is a whimsical tale of a boy living in the most dismal of conditions only to be swept away into an entirely new life full of wonders. A tried and true story indeed and unfortunately, that is where Rowling falls short--she is dealing with a story that has been told hundreds of times and doesn't do it masterfully. Certainly her imagination is apparent throughout but at the core of the story is an idea that has permeated literature for decades. One only has to look at the works of C.S. Lewis or Roald Dahl (fellow British authors of old) to realize what can truly be done with this story archetype.
Each chapter feels like its own seperate story causing a jumpiness that I felt to be rather jarring. It's almost perfect that the book is being converted to a movie because it feels like a scene-by-scene screenplay, not a flowing work of children's literature. Her representation of the awful Dursleys (Harry's guardians) almost reads like Dahl's "Matilda" or "James and the Giant Peach"--except it isn't as well-written.
It is obvious that Rowling is trying to capture a magical feeling and present it to the reader, but falls painfully short. Is that to say Harry Potter is not worth reading? Certainly not. I enjoyed the book, but I saw how much more amazing it could have been. It doesn't lack in heart and that is probably what attaches people to it. One can't help but cheer the ill-fated Harry Potter as he romps along with his friends. It's a wonderful story in the hands of a less than able storyteller. If you enjoy the adventures of Potter, I would highly recommend checking out Lewis or Dahl if you want a book told by the true "wizards" of children's literature. You'll realize what you've been missing all along.

Summary: This was a "horrible" book? Not REALLY!
Review: I just said it was a horrible book to get your attention! It was an amazingly beautiful book, with the suspense in the right places. A boy named Harry Potter (DUH) has been living with the horrible Dursleys for years now. His mother and father were killed in a "car accident". THe Dursleys are horrible and hate Harry. One day, a letter addressed to Harry arrives on their front steps. And then just like that, Harry meets Hagrid and learns all about the wizarding world, and also that he is a wizard. His parents were killed by a horrible wizard named Voldemort He is off to the wizarding school, Hogwarts, and there he comes across a frightening and suspenseful mystery.

Summary: Best seller in Brazil
Review: I just saw it everywhere, in every store, on the net, people from all over the world talking about it. When I saw something about it on Entertainment Tonight, I tought "ok, that's it, I'm going to check this one out". Fantasious books are usually not interesting to me, they're extremely boring, but this one has logic, and a foot on the reality, and tough there are fantastic creatures and magic everywhere, it's written in such a real way, mixing real elements with fantastic ones, that it becomes not absurd, but extremely interesting. And there's the humour, the scary parts, the misteries that are revealed slowly along the way. I was a total muggle, but J.K. Rowling made me change my mind. P.S.: The book is first place in every brazilian store I know. The hype is spreading.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Long intro, short plot, but interesting
Review: I just want to mention that I counted 192 pages before the story actually got to the business of solving what you-know-who was up to. In other words it was a 192 page long intro to Hogwarts followed by a short story.

If you look at the other Potter books written, this book is simply the intro book, kindof like a pre-algebra course. As a stand-alone book, it kinda sucks. Don't get me wrong, it has remarkable immersion qualities. This book has the magic stuff that all writers aspire to achieve. The book is uniquely inspired at a level not seen since Walt Disney did Fantasia!

But the plot is hazy, the conflict is short and the primary characters are stereotypical. This may be an enjoyable context for kids, but unenjoyable for adults looking for more personal involvement in the story. For instance, the wizest most powerful wizard at Hogwarts is an old grey wizard with a long white silvery beard. As you may guess: he's good, he's wise, he's powerful, he's rarely seen, and he's unexplicbly omnipotent. Talk about your stereotypical wizard! There's nary a Tolkien (Gandalf), Camelot (Merlin), Dragonlance (Fistandauntilis), Forgotten Realms (Elminster) or other popular fantasy setting in existance that hasn't done the old grey wizard thing to death! Stop with the old grey wizard thing already!!!
