Rating: Summary: Great for kids... Review: After enjoying book 3 in The Harry Potter series, I decided to read the beginning book in the series.I believe that my initial appeal to the series was owing to the fact that in the 3rd book, I was forced to learn about the characters, while starting at the beginning I was already familiar with the characters. In my opinion I found the story to be rather drawn-out. The book is exactly what the cover professed it to be, a children's novel. I definitely recommend this book to kids.
Rating: Summary: Yes it's for adults too! Review: After having read all four Harry Potter books three times each I am going through withdrawal. I wish I didn't have to wait a year or more for the next book so I bought the two schoolbooks. Of all the books I have read as an adult I have found some of the greatest reading joy in Harry Potter. Those of us who grew up as nerds, unathletic, and/or non-cliquey people will feel at home at Hogwarts. Those readers who haven't will still love reading these books. As each book unfolded I saw parallels between the Hogwarts world and the Star Wars films. Both promote a sense of a loner learning to thrive in a world where you are just a little bit (or maybe more than a little) different from everyone else. Harry is creative, intelligent, and interesting You will find yourself rooting him on as each book finds him confronting evil and I'm not going to spoil anything by saying any details! Don't skip these books because you consider yourself a "grown-up" and too adult to read them.
Rating: Summary: Great! Review: After hearing a lot about this series, I thought I'd check it out. I originally went into reading the book, thinking that I wouldn't like it because I don't like science fiction books and I thought it would be too childish for me. Although the book was a bit too easy to read, everything flowed together and somehow contributed to the ending of the book. It was a very imaginative book, with diverse characters. I would definitely recommend the book, especially to skeptics of the series because it's completely different than I thought it would be when I first picked it up.
Rating: Summary: A book that lives up to, and then exceeds, its hype. Review: After hearing about that "children's book on the NY Times Bestsellers list" for quite some time, I turned on the television one night to find 60 Minutes doing a report on Ms. Rowling. Enthralled by her rags to riches story, I decided to try the book out. What can I say? I couldn't put it down. As a law student who reads hours every day already, I found myself rushing through the assigned cases so that I would have time to read the Potter adventure. What a remarkable book. My only reservation is this: it's too short! I'm waiting for the next book in the mail!
Rating: Summary: This book was a disappointment. Review: After hearing all of the rave reviews, I was expecting a book on a par with the Chronicles of Narnia, A Wrinkle in Time, the E. Nesitt books, etc. It was a nice enough story but I found it disjointed and full of distracting cliches.
Rating: Summary: An instant classic Review: After hearing all the hoopla, I decided to read Harry Potter myself. It is a truly, wonderful awe inspiring book, one of those that I think will be around for a long time. Hopefully it will soon be required reading. Harry Potter is an admirable and interesting main character. The story has elements of classic well-loved movies and novels, and many important themes, like not to give up when obstacles come your way, or the fact that there's always going to be mean, nasty and/or annoying people wherever you go, but you can learn to live with that. As for people who think the book is Satanic--I have three things to tell them. 1. The book is a work of fiction--fiction is a story that's NOT REAL. 2. It's in the fantasy genre--fantasy is a genre of fiction that deals with magical or supernatural elements. 3. There's no mention of Satan worship or the Bible being bad anywhere in the book. (It actually promotes what could be termed 'good Christian morals') I think people who pronounce the book Satanic or whatever are overreacting and haven't read the book. Who ever thought in this age of the internet and 100 plus TV channels that kids would read a 300 plus page book and actually enjoy it? Not only that, their parents would read it and enjoy it too! I can remember being in the 9-12 age bracket and never in a million years could I imagine myself reading a book as long as "Harry Potter"--and I was voted the most avid reader in my school! Obviously, today's kids are a lot smarter than we give them credit for, and this book is a testament to that.
Rating: Summary: A Book You Just Cannot Put Down Review: After hearing how awesome the Harry Potter books are from my dad, brother, several friends, and even one of my friend's mom's I had to read Harry Potter to see for myself. I did not know what to expect because I never really had read a fantasy book. As soon as I started the book, I was attached. I could not put it down. I never found a good place to put the book down because I always wanted to know what would happen next. The first Harry Potter book definitely lived up to all of the praises I had heard about it. Harry Potter lives with the Dorsey's on Privet Drive. Harry has so far lived a miserable life with his aunt and uncle and their son, Dudley, a spoiled bully. Harry cannot help but notice the odd occurrences that always seem to happen. For example when he wishes for something to happen and somehow it does without him knowing how. Finally, Harry is offered some answers for all these weird "powers". On his twelfth birthday, Hagrid comes to pick Harry up for his first year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry has many questions for Hagrid. Hagrid manages to explain most of what Harry needs to know. Harry finds friends, sports, and magic in everything from classes to meals at Hogwarts. He cannot believe that he is really in the presence of all this greatness. Harry has many adventures during his first year. He often finds himself in trouble, but always seems to be able to make up for it. Harry has found his destiny, but must find a way to survive the testing experiences. Rowling uses many colors throughout the book, almost creating a picture in the readers mind. She also uses many metaphors, comparing two things to help the reader relate to what she creates in her fantasy story. Many of the names she creates in her stories have meanings. One example is "slytherin" referring to "slither" because the mascot of the house group is a snake. I enjoyed every part of the book and would not change any part of it. The book is not hard to read or understand. Any person who is in the fourth grade or above could read this book. I hope that everyone reads Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone so he/she can experience the amazing and adventurous story.
Rating: Summary: The Best book I ever read Review: After hearing how good Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone was by J.K Rowling, I began to read this novel. I could never put it down. It was like glued to my hands. It was one of the best books I ever read. This book is like a 10 out of 5 stars. One day Harry finds out that he is a wizard. Harry learns that he can be what ever he would like to be. Harry has a real enemy even worst then some of the teachers. Lord Voldemont, he killed Harry parents when he was a little boy and tried to kill Harry but he couldn't. Voldemont still tries to kill Harry but harry is always more powerful. Like I said Icould never put the book down my mom needed a crow bar just for me to let go of the novel. How can a novel be so amzaning? You have to read the novel before you watch it. After read the novel you have to read them all including the one coming out in june. I know I am going to be then first one in line. The author is good at making people come to life. She is also good at making you feel as it you were there.
Rating: Summary: Potter can be enjoyed by all ages! Review: After hearing my 48-year-old father rave about the Harry Potter books for months (he had originally bought it for my little brother but ended up reading it himself), I finally broke down and started the first one. I am a 22-year-old college student and I have not been so entranced by a book in a long time. While I am sure children would love this book too, I highly recommend it for all adults. You won't be able to put it down. I'm already halfway through the Chamber of Secrets and can't wait for my dad's father's day gift to arrive: the 3rd book- which is published in England in early July!
Rating: Summary: Be cautioned Review: After hearing of the Harry Potter craze for a while, I finally decided to check out the books. I was able to get all four form the public library. I whizzed through the first three, and was in the middle of the fourth when my parents decided that I had read enough fantasy for a while, and I had to put the books down. My dad recently fowarded me an article on the Harry Potter books, and after reading it, I could see that my parents were right to have me stop reading the books. In the article, the author points out that, although the Harry Potter book may seem harmless at first sight, their message is more subtle and twisted. The books uphold the philosophy of revenge (Harry wants revenge against his mean foster family and a rival at school) and the witch craft in the book, while unique, has taken a darker turn. Harry finds that he has certain characteristics that compare with Voldemort, his mortal enemy and the murderer of his parents. Later on in the series, the books seem to hint that your best friend may be your worst enemy, instilling a sense of distrust into children and teens alike. Although the Harry Potter books claim to be children's books, I think that it takes somene more mature than a child to perceive and deal with the underlying message of J.K. Rowling's books.
