Rating: Summary: A story which spans any age gap Review: I had heard so much about the Harry Potter books before I actually picked up the first one, and the raves I had heard were not wrong! As an avid fantasy reader, I had missed the books from my youth which introduced me to the genre. Harry Potter, the character, brings back all the magic that I had been missing. While I am not in the age group for which the book is recommended, I am in the age group which this book satisfies. I plan on owning the whole series and sharing the wonder of the stories with my kids when I have them. Until then, I will read for my own pleasure, reveling in the intrigue, magic, and fantasy as I follow Harry through his adventures.
Rating: Summary: not deeply imaginative Review: I had hoped, given the reviews I read, that this would be a book great for bedtime reading to my two sons. I bought the book and started to read at night. I had a hard time keeping interested. And my sons lost interest shortly into the book. Just not a lot of new characters or story line to speak of. Seems to be a lot of rehashing of other better written books. Dialog of characters very elementary. And I know this is a kids book, but not too much stimulating converstation. I am sorry that I seem to be an outsider in my opinion of this book, but I think my standard for "great book" might be a tad bit different than prior reviewers.
Rating: Summary: It's for all ages Review: I had made a deal with my younger sister Tina (age 11) to read the Harry Potter books together. I never considered that I would enjoy this task as much as I did! I have always been a fan of fantasy/fiction. This book has it all. From the start to finish this book keeps you interested. This could very well be the Lord of the Ring for her time. Adults as well as children will love this fantastic tale written by J.K. Rowling. Long Live Harry Potter!
Rating: Summary: Decent fantasy...? Review: I had mixed fellings while reading "Harry Potter". On one hand I felt that this is decent fantasy book with exciting action and shallow meaning. On the other hand it felt like some kind of unhealthy mix of C.S. Lewis' "Chronicles of Narnia" and Le Guin's "A Wizard of Earthsea". If you are familiar with those books i would not recomend "Harry Potter" to you, it will feel all too familiar. If you are unfamiliar with the genre of fantasy -- "Harry Potter" books will give you a nice intoduction.
Rating: Summary: One Of The Best Books EVER! Review: I had never heard of the Harry Potter series until my mom brought it up one day, and asked me if I would like to read this book. I said yes, thinking I wouldn't like it very much, but I read it anyway. I was so surprised at how good it was, I had to have the next one. All in all, I would say that this is one of the best books ever written, and no collection is complete without it.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic, fun, a great story Review: I had no idea how many reviews there were for this book, and I'm not going to re-iterate everything others have said. However, I read this book as an adult, and I think it's absolutely fantastic. I remember what fun it was to read kid's books, and I applaud J.K. Rowling for an amazing mind, and a wonderful sense of creativity. Simply outstanding!
Rating: Summary: Harry Potter is a rare delight! Review: I had no idea that books this good were still being written. Original and extremely fun. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. Restore some magic to your life.
Rating: Summary: Undescribable! Review: I had not heard of JK Rowling before this book landed upon my desk. I had recently bought the Silmarillion and I was wondering which book to read first. It was late at night and I decided to take the one which looked easiest to read: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I started reading... "Looks like a good book" I thought. After the first 50 pages, I wasn't Pablo any more, my imagination had taken me to Hogwarts, this new world full of magic I had discovered. I stayed up all night just because I couldn't stop reading. On the next day, I slept through one of my lessons! But it was worth it, Harry Potter books are, without any doubt, the best ones I have ever read. If you are fed up with everyday life, or even if you aren't, buy this book, it is absolutely amazing.
Rating: Summary: I Can't remember when I've enjoyed reading more. Review: I had seen this book on the shelves for months and after "Chamber of Secrets" came out I thought I'd give "Harry Potter" a try. I knew after the first chapter that this was going to be a fantastic journey. I know it's supposed to be for children, and I wish I had some to read it to, but adults will be as captivated with Harry (and Ron and Hermoinne) as they would any adult character in any of todays popular novels If you read for sheer pleasure, the excitement of seeing in your mind's eye what's written so simply on these pages, take your child's heart and imagination through one of the best books I've read in my 38 yrs. of living.(After I read "Chamber of Secrets", I started "Sorcerer's Stone" again.) I could be perfectly content to journey with Harry Potter through his years, without opening any other book.
Rating: Summary: The Book that Started the Harry Potter Phenomenon Review: I had some apprehensions about reading this series, despite all the hoopla surrounding it. I had never even heard of Harry Potter until Book 4 was coming out in the summer of 2000 and practically every magazine in American was doing a feature article on it. Unlike many others, I hesitated in just splurging and buying all four books. I was afraid that with all the hype encasing the series, I would be let down. I was worried that I would be one of just a few people who wouldn't like them and that I would be out of a lot of money.Boy was I wrong. I love this series. I have read each book twice since buying them during the summer of 2000. The first book in the series, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" gets the bandwagon rolling. We learn that Lord Voldemort is a wizard gone bad, responsible for the mass killings of innocent Muggles (non-wizard people) and wizards, including the deaths of the parents of the main character, Harry Potter. He is so frightening, that people only refer to him as He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. We also learn that Lord Voldemort attempted to remove Harry when he did away with Harry's parents, but it didn't work. Harry was able to fend off his attacker because, as we discover later in the book, his mother died in the attempt to save him. She unwittingly provided him with the protection of her love, she left upon him the traces of her sacrifice. Lord Voldemort is so evil that touching someone who is loved so much very nearly destroyed him. It left him completely powerless, but he still managed to escape. The Lord of Darkness doesn't let this deter him, though. By the end of the first book, he has gained just enough energy to possess one of the teachers, Professor Quirrell, at the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. His attempts to get his hands on the Sorcerer's Stone are thwarted by Harry, however, and Lord Voldemort is left even less alive than he was before. These books are very engaging, and readers of all ages will enjoy them. I am glad that I decided to throw caution to the wind and buy them all at once. And what I told you above is only scratching the surface of what all goes on in the first book. I didn't tell you about Ron, Hermione, all the different teachers, Quidditch, Harry's adoptive parents, and so much more. This is a series that has turned kids away from shoot'em up video games and converted them into reading fanatics. No matter what some people may think of these books, they will always have a permanent resting place on my bookshelf. Thank you, J.K. Rowling, for creating such an inspiring and heart-warming series.
