Rating: Summary: Changed my mindset Review: I had come to believe that the best books that could've been written were all written, and there was not much imagination left for humankind to explore in the field of creative writing, that was until I read Harry Potter and Philosopher's Stone. A classic, for all ages, invigorating my faith in the fertility of human imagination, reaffirming that there's still a lot left for mankind to look forward to, from this and other worlds that exist just beyond the realms of our senses. This book brought my childhood back, along with a desperate urge to acquire some magical skills so that I could accompany Harry in his exploits, not wanting to believe that for this life (at least) I'll remain a wretched 'muggle' waiting for the sequels to keep myself abreast of the future adventures of my dear friend, Harry Potter. If you want to know more about the book then you may read the other 3659 reviews (at the time I am writing mine, and am sure this no. will swell some more), but my advice is forget the reviews, just start on with the book, and ENJOY.
Rating: Summary: Definitely up to expectation Review: I had heard a lot about Harry Potter , and finished reading '..the Sorcerer's Stone' today . It was definitely up to expectation ,and made me realize why it is so popular . Also , the style of writing and the build-up of the story reminds me of an author ( in Bengali ) , whose writings have a similar flavor . For Bengali readers , who have read and liked Shirshendu Mukhopadhdhay : This reminds me of 'Monoj'der adbhut bari ' , 'Gonsai baganer bhut' , and a few more . If you have liked those , you would definitely like Harry Potter .
Rating: Summary: A Spellbinding Book For The Whole Family Review: I had heard a lot about the Harry Potter series everywhere, but it wasn't until my mother bought it to read with my 12 and 8 year old brothers that my interest really became peaked. To have a book that is able to connect families of all sorts into the world of reading is a fantastic tribute to J.K. Rowling. Who can resist the adventures and magic behind Harry's journey into the world of Hogwarts? It's a non-stop rollercoaster from start to finish that no one, no matter what age they are, should miss. I recomend this book to anyone who loves a great story, one that makes you fall in love with a great little boy named Harry Potter.
Rating: Summary: I have another author to worship... Review: I had heard about the Harry Potter books (who hasn't, by now?) on the news, in bookstores...but I really didn't pay much attention at first. Another fantasy series. @whee. You know how it is. Besides, I was a Jordan fanatic, and the latest book was occupying my time. Then just yesterday, I came upon a paperback copy of _Sorcerer's Stone_. Much cheaper than the hardback, so why not? Do you know that once I opened this book when i got home, I didn't put it down until the last page? I'm twenty-six, but I have never outgrown my love for a good fantasy novel. However, I've become disappointed with a fair amount of what's come out in the past few years, and I've found myself going back to the old standbys--The Lord of the Rings series, Chronicles of Narnia--they have a power to enchant that many writers of fantasy have lost. Fantasy writing is nothing if you can't enchant the reader. But with Harry Potter, I've found that enchantment that I've been missing. It's just such a remarkable little book. I absolutely love it. The writing is spectacular, the plot is nice and tight, and the characterization is beautiful. I've not read a children's story this good in quite a while. Rand al'Thor's fight with Lews Therin and the Dark One can wait. There's a whole slew of adventures in House Gryffindor waiting for me. :)
Rating: Summary: Not just a children's book Review: I had heard about these books, but have just now read the first one. What a wonderful story! I read the book in one night. The character development and plot are solid. I think this book would appeal to adults who enjoy a magical and mystical tale. I've bought the second in the series and can't wait to read it.
Rating: Summary: Best for Children and Adults Alike Review: I had heard about this book from people that I worked with and decided to see what was so intriguing. What I found was a refreshing and exciting surprise. The Harry Potter series is much more than I could have ever anticipated. I first started reading the book to my 3 young sons, then found myself being drawn into the world of Muggles vs the Wizardry. For those that say that the series is encouraging the occult are missing the general premise behind the scenes. Mainly, you find yourself cheering for a boy who knows no loving family, but finds not only love but a heritage of magic. The book propels the young and old alike to a place of great imagination and possibilities. It also teachs the lesson that even though areas of life may be harsh, there is moments of great hope. You, as the reader follow Harry Potter from his miserable existance as the child in the closet of his Aunt's and Uncle's home to a school of magic where his destiny lies. You find yourself caught up in the day to day life of boy who was treated like dirt to one who is respected as every child should be. So, give yourself and your family a treat and try the Harry Potter series. You might find yourself caught up in the Great Magic as Harry is.
Rating: Summary: "Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone" Magnificent! Review: I had heard all of the hype about this book, and decided to ask for it ... From the very beginning, Harry Potter tugs on your heart strings and you feel nothing but sympathy for him. He's like a classic Charlie Brown character--picked on by everyone and treated injustly. Nevertheless, Harry overcomes this when his past is uprooted by a strange magical being, and the reader's feelings toward him quickly turn from pity to admiration. "Harry Potter" is a pefect mix of three worlds--Narnia, Legend of Zelda, and Lord of the Rings. I stayed up til 2 in the morning reading this book...I just couldn't put it down! I recommend it to anyone who is fascinated by the magical and whimsical ways of the world.
Rating: Summary: AWESOME! Review: I had heard all the hype about the Harry Potter series and decided to read them. I couldn't put them down once I started! The story line is really great and it makes me feel like a kid again. I would definitely recommend these books to both the young and old. If you are looking for a series that you will treasure for the rest of your life, this is definitely the one! I can't wait for the 4th book.
Rating: Summary: Excellent all around book Review: I had heard all the hype surrounding the Harry Potter books, but I wasn't really interested enough to want to read them at first. However, I went to the library to get some books and couldn't find all that many that I really wanted to read. I finally borrowed "Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone" from somebody because there wasn't anything else to read. I found out that it's a great book in every way. It's about a young boy, Harry Potter, whose parents get killed, so he is delivered to a Muggle (humans) family. He isn't paid much attention even after 11 years of living there and he isn't satisfied with his life. One day, a huge man named Hagrid sends him a bunch of letters telling him that he has been accepted to a famous school of wizards and witches. From that point on, his life takes a major facelift. Harry also finds out that he's real famous in the world of wizards and witches for something. He goes to Hogwarts School where he makes a lot of friends, and even some new enemies. He learns to become a wizard, helps save a dragon and even finds out he has an enormous talent as a Quidditch sport player. The book makes an even bigger change in plot once he finds out about a mysterious stone called the Sorcerer's Stone."Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone" is an unbelievably compelling and captivating book. Once you start reading it and understanding it, you won't want to put the book down. The author, J.K. Rowling, really knows how to put words and use imagery so you can see the story happening while you read it. There are so many different and captivating sides to this story, which is what makes it a modern classic. The whole book is compelling and thought provoking, and some parts of the book even have a touch of comedy and mystery to them. This really is a book that you'll never forget once you read it and if you like fantasy books with a story that never gets boring, I recommend getting it. But I'll warn you right now, once you finish this book, you'll want to read all the books in the series, I know I do, and I will.
Rating: Summary: Not Just for Kids! Review: I had heard so much about Harry Potter and seen the books piled in every book store I visited, that I finally caved and said "why not". Hey, I loved Lord of the Rings! I started with book 1, of course, The Sorcerers Stone and I'm hooked. Going to buy all the rest of them. The story is enchanting, the teachers and Harry's fellow students at Hogwarts are well developed characters and the life situations encountered by Harry and his friends are believable and touching. I generally read murder mystery books but I found J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter absolutely wonderful and as good as any murder mystery I've read. I highly recommend this book to anyone with or without children, for the child in all of us! :)
