Rating: Summary: How could you possibly NOT love this book! Review: I first found out about the Harry Potter books from my obsessing friend.... Harry Potter this, Harry Potter that. that really bugged me, so i thought, "this is just another stupid book that's got people hooked." well, it's not stupid, but it'll definitely get you hooked! when my sister bought the paperback edition (i suddenly wanted to read it) i read it straight thru in 3 hours, but the bad thing was i started at 10pm and finished around 1am! i got in trouble for that but that's beside the point;) it was suspenseful and INCREDIBLY well written for a first-time author.... actually, for any author, come to think of it. she's got her own creative twist, and after having read all four current books, i want to get writing! J.K. Rowling is an inspiring author and her books have brought me many ideas for my story writing, in school and independently. Also, for you people out there who "hate" it or think its "sloppy," "a bad narrative," and "predictable," well, you try writing a book and promising more! it's not easy, and every book is better than the last, even though you sometimes need a previous book for referance. if the author ever reads this review, i admire you greatly and you have deeply inspired me to follow my passion, which just happens to be mythical writing;)
Rating: Summary: An Exciting and Humorous Adventure. Review: I first grabbed Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone desperately seeking an entertaining fantasy book that doesn't turn into a boring yawnfest at times. This book pleased me incredibly. It's very exciting and never has a dull moment. The characters are also very interesting and make you laugh with joy, cry with sadness, or clench your teeth with anger. I loved it. Plus, it's great for all ages! P.S. Dudley is hilarious!
Rating: Summary: Future educator meets Harry Potter Review: I first heard about Harry Potter in my college education classes. All of my COLLEGE AGED classmates were raving about the spell Potter cast on them. I decided that I should read the book and see what all the hype was about. From page one, I was captivated by the book. Rowling mixes wonderful plot development with a timeless tale for a book that won't let you put it down. As far as concerns go about witchcraft, etc., I think that as long as the reader has a good grasp on reality, they will not try the spells that the kids use at Hogwarts or stray into the world of the occult. If parents are concerned about this, they should read the book first themselves before they give it to their children.
Rating: Summary: Very good book, and I'm not even finished! Review: I first heard about these books a few weeks ago on the news, then proceeded to check out Amazon.com...with almost 2000 reviews, this has got to be a good book, so I bought it...it's not good, it's VERY good! It's very consistent and never takes a boring downward spiral...and I'm not even finished! Then come the reviews, which is the deciding point between customers buying it or not. I heard the good reviews and the bad...the bad reviews are probably made by prudish people who want nothing but peace...I can't agree more for peace, but it's never gonna be exactly like you want it. I'm pretty sure kids won't take it that far and try witchcraft, because most likely, it won't work. But that's beside the point. Anyone who wants to read an interesting book should pick this up...I'm sure the other 2 in the series are good, too.
Rating: Summary: This is a really great book!! Review: I first heard about this book from some friends at school. They told me that it was a really great book and that I should read it, and one day as a surprise, my mother bought it for me. Once I started to read it, I couldn't get my hands off of it. My hands were glued to it. I think that any child who loves adventure and has a big imagination would like this book a lot, and I would recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Sparked Interest in Reading Review: I first heard of Harry Potter's books from my mother. She suggested that my 14 year old son read one of them. I knew my son was more interested in computer games and skateboarding and had no interest whatsoever in reading. I did buy the Sorcerer's Stone book, hoping that I could find a way to get him to read it. I made a deal with him. If he read a chapter in the book, he could have the computer. At first, he fought it saying no way was he going to read this silly children's book. But, I stuck to my guns and he sat down and started reading. Right now, he is on his last chapter and he just asked me to order the next two books for him. Hurray for Harry Potter!
Rating: Summary: Suprisingly awesome Review: I first heard of Harry when my two younger brothers beganreading it. It was a few months later when I picked it up justbecause I was bored when I saw why everyone liked it. It had an excellent plot and had mystery, humor, suspense, and adventure all packed into one story. My favorite part was in the begining when Hagrid had to explain everything to Harry. It was the first fantasy book I ever read that made sense. I'm looking forward to the other three books.
Rating: Summary: A great adventure Review: I first heard of the book from a friend who was reading it at the time. My friend encouraged me to read the book as well. I was amused by the fact that my friend never lifted an eyelid off the book while reading. It motivated me to buy the book, so I bought it that week. Harry Potter is a very real and lovable character. I never really seamed to embrace the fact that most of the people today have read the book, I think of Harry and his world as a friend and place that belonged only to me. I am transported into his form and feel what I think he would feel. I felt hate towards his life's long enemy, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named - which he did not know he had until his eleventh birthday. Harry felt so alone when he left for Hogworts, that I wished I were there to comfort him. I felt pure joy in the time he spent with his friends (Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley, and Hagrid,) and pursue strange and thrilling adventures. I think this book is for anyone who likes fiction books. However, I have another side to my thoughts on the book. Although, (I am American and this might not even have to do with the fact that I am American,) it disappoints me that 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone' has been changed to 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone' to accommodate Americans. I feel that it is an insult to many people and to the author. Nevertheless, whereas the fact that many things have been changed in 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone' for the convenience of Americans, it remains one of my favorites.
Rating: Summary: Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone Review: I first heard of the Harry Potter books when I was visiting my Mother's home in Florida. She told me that if I read one chapter of The Sorcerers Stone that I would not be able to put the book down. I didn't believe her, but after reading half way through the first chapter I was hooked. I was drawn into the world of Harry Potter and The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry Lived with his Aunt, Uncle and a bully, who was his cousin. Harry detested living with them and was treated so poorly that he had to sleep in a cupboard and was tortured by his cousin. However, everything changed the day Harry was visited by a wizard named Hagrid on his eleventh birthday. Hagrid told him of his true magical past and how he once stopped Lord Voldemort, the most evil and diabolical wizard that ever lived. Harry was invited to The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry where he meets new friends and experiences incredibly realistic and amazing adventures. J.K. Rowling has created another world with every adventure so realistic that you feel as if you are one of the characters. I think this book is fantastic and I would recommend it to all ages.
Rating: Summary: simply amazing. Review: I first heard the name "Harry Potter" when I was about 16. It was 2000, and I was a junior in high school. A friend of mine had gotten ahold of an early copy of one of the HP books, and I just wasn't really interested. Flash forward to 2002. I worked in a movie theatre. One of the perks was getting a chance to see free screenings of movies the night before they were released. I decided to go with my co-workers and see "The Chamber of Secrets." Although I enjoyed the movie, I kind of put it out of my mind for awhile. Flash forward, once again, to 2004. My neice is almost 2, and Harry Potter is the only thing she will actually sit down and watch. It's the only thing that can make her calm down. And I wonder if perhaps she's on to something. I sat with her and watched the first and second movies one night while babysitting, and I was enlightened to the magic that is Harry Potter. Harry Potter, even in movie form is not unlike what Ramona Quimby was to me when I was a child. I have just finished the second book, and realized Harry Potter is what children today will have to hold on to. It's magical, uplifting, and you can't deny the life lessons kids will gain from it. Take for example, the ongoing struggle between "Muggle-born" and "pure-blood" witches and wizards, it teaches kids to be accepting and that everyone deserves a fair chance. There are many more that I could describe in great detail, however, it would probably go far beyond the 1,000 word limit. In short, any Harry Potter book is well worth the time spent reading it. No doubt this series will go down as a children's literary classic of our time, and I'm glad children have something more than TV or video games.
