Summary: A strange Wizard
Review: A Review By Kory
A young boy, Harry Potter lives on Privet Drive with his aunt, uncle, and cousin. His mother and father died from a black magic wizard named Voldemort, even though he was told they died in a car crash. Harry is sent many letters by a school called Hogwarts School of Wizardry, which he is not allowed to read because his uncle treats him very unfairly. The family goes to a secluded house out by the beach thinking no one would find Harry there, but Hagrid comes to Harry's rescue, and later takes him to Hogwarts where Harry meets many new friends on the way.

This story was very fun to read. I really liked the way the author laid everything out in the story, and made the story very suspenseful yet adventurous at the same time. I also enjoyed how Harry and Hagrid became good friends and they were always there for each other. During the beginning of the story Harry had a very rough childhood having no parents and having to leave with his horrible aunt and uncle. Harry finds out around the middle of the story that he is one of the most well known wizards alive, because he was the only person strong enough to live through Voldemorts powers. Harry notices that someone is trying to take the "whatever" Fluffy the three-legged dog is guarding, so Harry, Ron, and Hermione go on an adventure of there own.

I would strongly recommend this book to almost anyone. It is a very fun and adventurous book with all kinds of curves. The reading isn't the easiest, but definitely not horribly hard. I am definitely going to read the second Harry Potter and hopefully read the rest.

Summary: Not Worth All the Excitement
Review: A Review by Pete
There is a young outcast in a family of jerks and lots of magical and things that are just [messed] up. He lives with his aunt, uncle, and cousin and they are all mean to him. He finds out that some guy killed his parents and then he ends up going to a school of wizardry. He also has a weird scar that tells a story. No one ever liked him before he went to the school but a lot changes.

The characters were really unbelievable but imaginable. I don't really think that it is all as good as it is supposed to be. One thing is that this really bad guy they cant even say his name its like a sin or something. For example " It is just forbidden to speak of Voldemort!" I don't know. The subject was just odd is all I can say. Well, not really the subject just the sort of imaginary thing of it.

I would really not recommend it, but I hope that the movie is a lot better. I'm sure that a lot of people disagree with me but that's the way that I see it!

Summary: incredible!
Review: A thoroughly enjoyable, absolutely fantastic twist and update of the old archetypal story of the young unknown. A new classic in children's fantasy literature.

Summary: A glorious work
Review: A touch of Anglophilia, a mixture of realism not usual in children's fiction (yes, realism), a gripping story that moves at a furious, roller-coaster pace, a wonderful combination of the ordinary and the extradorinary-- all these combine to make this first Harry Potter book a well-deserved sensation. The friendship between Harry and Ron is also intensely sweet and harkens back to other great friendships of children's literature.

Summary: Trying to tip the balance in the way of sensibility ...
Review: A trademark of good children's literature is that it can be read and enjoyed by adults. Now, this particular adult admits that he has not particularly enjoyed Rowling's book, despite the considerable effort he has put into trying. I cannot and will not judge its educational value, since there have been many books I've read as a child which had very little such content (such as Roald Dahl's books; and what is the educational value of Winnie the Pooh, exactly, besides being the world's most adorable bear?).
I can't find any faults with Rowling's writing, but on the other hand I can't find any virtues, either. Rowling's imagination is nothing more than the conscious and unconscious borrowing of cultural motifs and the mixing of them together, hoping that if she'll mix enough different motifs we won't be able to recognize them. I don't even think Rowling herself realized how lacking in originality her book is. Example: the three headed dog guarding the underground - Greek mythology. The chess game - Alice in Wonderland. Boy sent to cruel relatives (and then gets back at relatives) -almost all of Roald Dahl's books. I don't buy her arguement that these were done intentionally, and even if they were, borrowing without bounds from other works doesn't make your work any deeper or more meaningful. It's all form, not content.
I suppose Harry Potter has its merits and little children do enjoy reading it, but adults, unless they have a special interest in children's literature, should really try out for more adult fiction - Rowling's characters are simply one dimensional and uninteresting. If you're really feeling a rush of nostalgia, why not check out more magical children's books? George Macdonald's works are just as good today as they were in the 19th century, and Roald Dahl's books are hilarious. Life is too short to waste on mediocre fiction such as this.

Summary: This would be the perfect cartoon....
Review: A very cute children's book. Reccomended for people who don't like very wordy novels. Also a must read for young adults! Harry Potter is very enchanting.

Summary: Enjoyable for different age groups
Review: A very exciting story that I couldn't put down. A bit scary, lots of magic, and more grown ups should read it. Harry is instantly likeable, but Hagrid was my favourite character. I'm off to buy the sequel!

Summary: A very good book
Review: A very good book that will capture young children's hearts from begining to end. From trying to struggle with school that he didn't even know of till lately to trying to find out what is hidden on the third floor of the Hogwart's school, Harry Potter goes on unbelievabe journeys through magic. A great book which has everything in it from a normal child's life to a very extra odinary child's life!
