Rating: Summary: good book Review: I think that this is now my favorite of the Harry Potter books. The story is much more complicated than the prior books, perhaps reflecting Harry growing up a bit more with each book. I definately recommend reading the book. It's a great continuation of the series.
Rating: Summary: Book 5 is AMAZING!!! Review: In a nutshell...Order of the Phoenix is amazing!!! There are unexpected twists and turns and surprises in EVERY chapter! Every time I turned around there was something making me gasp, do a double take, or totally surprising me that I couldn't put the book down! I finished it in two days and have already begun to read it again! Order of the Phoenix is a very amazing turn around in the series with a much darker tone and more complex plots that pull you into the story. I felt I was right there with the characters going through their fears, struggles, and triumphs. The Order of the Phoenix is an awsome read which in my opinion is an understatement! J.K. Rowling has done it again! It's incredible!
Rating: Summary: Coming of Age in the Magical World Review: I came late to the Harry Potter phenomenon. Frankly, I was convinced that my brother, who incedently is assistant dean of stundents at a major state university and just over a year younger than me was daft for reading a "Childrens Book". That was two years ago. I have been a committed Gryffindor since. Book 5, however is not just another masterfully crafted piece of literature by Ms. Rowling. It is a true coming of age story; weaving the tribulations that every early tean faces with the wonder of the magical world. Harry is truly allowed to mature in this book. His character becomes much much deeper than the tragic hero of the the first four books. In addition, we as readers are allowed to see, admittedly through the prism of adolenence, the breaking of the paradigm of adult infallability. Particularly with respect to Harry's father James, his godrather Sirius, but most astoudingly with respect to Albus Dumbledore, the carefully crafted and seemingly omniscient headmaster of Hogwarts. Make no mistake, for those of us craving the a return to Rowling's magical world, the excitment, adventure, humor even tragedy of volume five will not disappoint, but be prepared for a much darker journey than normal as the Hogwart's Express departs King's Cross Station this time.
Rating: Summary: Harry Potter's finally back Review: The suspense created by JK Rowling about this book makes the book really hard to put down. Don't worry, I won't give anything away in here. But I will say that the book answers many questions about Harry and his situation. Rowling took the Harry we know and made him more human. He is really pissed off at everyone and everything. Just like any other typical adolescent. This Harry is growing up and learning to see everything and everyone he knows through adult eyes. Although the book is quite long, it doesn't seem to sag or slow down anywhere. Just when one thinks that the same thing that happened in the last 4 books is going to happen again, Rowling throws a curved quaffle at the reader forcing him or her to "sloth grip roll" and change opinions about how things in the wizard world are just like in the muggle world. Rowling puts Harry and the Hogwarts gang into almost inescapable situations. I knew that Harry would get out of them (after all, there are two more books), but I had no idea how. There is a death in the book. Rowling has mentioned this in past interviews. Although this death was not as surprising as it could have been, it makes Harry an even more tragic figure than he already was. This book seems much more thought out than "The Goblet of Fire". There are clues and situations throughout the book that actually lead towards the ending of the book and beyond to the next two books. Congratulations to Ms. Rowling for an excellent job. Hope we won't have to wait another three years for the next book.
Rating: Summary: WOW Review: What a great ride. As soon as my eagerly awaited package from Amazon.com arrived I immediately took the portkey to Hogwarts. Book 5 was well worth the wait. Many questions are answered and many more are left open for future books. Harry, now a 15 year old with typical 15 year old problems, as well as a few atypical ones, sees his relationships with everyone he holds dear tested as well as seeing some of his beliefs about his family shown to be less then accurate. In the end it is the power that comes from having true frineds that really makes the difference. How long before Book 6?
Rating: Summary: A good long read Review: I've been reading it almost non-stop since it arrived in the mail Saturday morning. The children have eaten frozen pizza, because I refused to cook until I finished it. It gets a little wordy in places, but you can expect that from a book with 870 pages. I did come away with a better understanding of why things have happened the way they have so far. I was delighted with many of the sidelines like Hermione's dedication to House Elves, and her determination to free them with home knit hats. The new dark arts teacher is terribly evil, in a bubblegum pink sort of way which I found quite refreshing this time around. Harry suffers terribly at her hand, as does the entire school, even some of the teachers. This particular portion of the plot grated on my nerves in a satisfyingly annoying fashion, clearly intended by the author. Harry's detached relationship with Dumbledore is depressing, although well explained and repaired in the end. Hagrid's early absence dissappointed me, when he does show up though, this too makes perfect sense. The death scene leaves me with mixed emotions. I'm angry with the author, sympathetic with Harry, and frustrated with the turn of events. It was very tricky the way it came about. Mostly, I enjoyed this book. Opening it up and stepping into Howgwart's was like returning to an old friend I hadn't seen in a while. Well worth wating for, and satisfying to read.
Rating: Summary: Good because it was Harry Potter. Not for it's content. Review: 870 pages is a heck of a big book. However after the first 300 pages nothing much has happened and what has happened is rather poorly described. The plot slowly gets going and only after 800 pages does it really hit full stride. Then it finishes 10 pages after the final scene with you wishing that there was more. Not because the book was so interesting, but because the book didn't really say or do much. The main reason it was enjoyable was because the kids are still as mischevous as ever. Of the five books it is the least enjoyable of the five. Considering the hype and amount of time this book had taken I was quite diappointed. I reccomend this to someone who was read all the Potter books, for if this is the first Potter book a person reads they might not read any of the others. Read it because it is Harry Potter. Not because it is a good book.
Rating: Summary: What a book! Review: This book is awsome. I couldn't put it down. I received my book at 12:30 on Saturday afternoon via Fedex. I was sitting my chair by 2:00 with my book. I could hardly put it down. I finished it at 1 AM this morning. It does a really good job of expanding the characters and getting them all started going through puberty. I can remember how I felt at 15, and it's exactly like Harry and Ron are feeling. I won't give away any spoilers, but just when you then you have something figured out, think again. This plot has more twists and turns than a roller coaster and that's what keeps you glued to your book. A great continuation to the series. I just hope I don't have to wait 3 years for the next book to come out!
Rating: Summary: Excellent read! Great Review: I just finished reading the new Harry Potter book, and i must say that it was worth the wait! We finally understand Harry's past, the battle scene near the end is spectacular, fantastic new spells, and even the new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher is great! This book leaves you waiting for the next one, and the prophecy at the end shows us how the whole thing will have to conclude in book 7! I can't wait for the next, this was great!
Rating: Summary: Answers lots of questions; poses even more! Review: I read this book nonstop in a day, and absolutely loved it. It tied up a lot of loose ends and conjecture, answered many questions, and posed several more. In this volume, teenage Harry not only deals with new stress on his longtime friendships with Hermione, Ron, and Hagrid, but faces some unpleasant truths about the wizarding world and experiences heartbreaking loss. There is a lot of action in this book; so much so that it requires at least another read-through to take it all in. Matter of fact, that's just what I'm doing now!
