Rating: Summary: Dumbledore's "old gang" is back on the game... Review: As expected, 'Phoenix' has broken records and caused young children (and their legal-age siblings) to wait in lengthy lines outside their local bokstore. And following the precedent set by its 'Goblet' predecessor, the book is a page-turning adventure full of familiar ideas and even more familiar faces. While reading with more gratification and and less frightfulness than 'Goblet', Rowling throws us back into Hogwarts with a vengeance complete with the Quidditch Cup and Hermione's exam schedules; however this time we are greeted with school meddling from the Ministry of Magic and the constant burn from Harry's trademark scar. The pace is apropriately uneven; and Harry's excitement (quidditch and girls, does life get better?), anxiety (You-Know-Who and the upcoming O.W.L.s), and boredom (waiting away his days at school while He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is on the rise?) are reflected through the highs and lows in action. There is also the problem of its role as a set-up book. The war has not yet truly started--the final chapter of 'Phoenix' is entitled "The Second War Begins"--, and much of the book's action is building to that conflict that we can presume will come in the next book. However the small battles and victories as well as defeats do provide an important basis for what readers can expect Harry to face in the future. Rowling does narrate the death of a "main character" that comes as a shock and a heartbreak, all the while weaving with her signature humanity. To wit, this book is easily up to the bar set by its four precursors. If you are among the few that have yet to get your hand on or be captured by this installment, this novel will not disappoint.
Rating: Summary: Fantastic! Review: Not wanting to give anything away, I'll simply say that this book is phenomenal. Brilliant on a number of levels, it presents its themes and sympathies candidly, though with a subtle undercurrent and mood that permeates the book. It answers some of our questions, leaves us hanging on others, and brings up a whole new raft which we will undoubtedly debate hotly until book 6! These are the most wonderful books I have ever been fortunate enough to read. Though long, it keeps its plots lines clear and easy to follow, and never become dull or slogs along. JK Rowling is truly a gifted, gifted writer.
Rating: Summary: The Plot Review: Everyone who enjoyed the first of Harry Potter books, will be blown out of their socks! This as you can tell will be and is the best of all the books. Things have changed since the year before and so have most of the characters. For instence Harry thinks he is hellcinating sometimes, Ron makes the quidditch team, and Voldemort is up no good again. Voldemort has a plan that could possibly succed. Harry, with all he is up to, might be expelled. Someone in this book dies. There of course is a new defense against the dark arts teacher, and this new teacher is a close second to Snape in being mean. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is very adventurous and suspensful. I sujest this book to people of all ages.
Rating: Summary: WELCOME TO THE ADULT WORLD, HARRY POTTER! Review: After pulling an all-nighter to complete the first 500 pages, I was afraid picking it up again in the cold light of day would prove disappointing. Not so. This is by far the best H.P. yet. J.K. Rowling manages to believably intertwine the adolescent mood swings in the teen-aged characters with the corresponding exasperation and patience of the adults while telling an intricate tale of revenge, deceit and injustice. From the first three pages in which Harry, saving his dispicable cousin from the dementors, causes himself most unpleasant consequences, through the reappearance of several characters from earlier books, the introduction of the mysterious and strangely familiar Order of the Phoenix, really horrible conditions at Hogwarts culminating in a hilarious total breakdown of discipline, a breathtaking battle in the depths of the Minstry of Magic, tragedy and grief, not to mention the Harryotypical narrow escapes--this is one destined for the classics. Harry is a true hero--perservering in the face of overwhelming disappointment, disillusionment, guilt and grief--not to mention confusion over his first romantic encounter with a girl, struggling to balance his school obligations with the rather hectic events in the outside world surrounding Voldemort's return, and his changing relationships with his friends Ron and Hermione. The introduction of several new characters, notably Dolores Umbridge (wouldn't Prunella Scales be great in the part?) enhance the action in J.K. Rowling's very special character-driven way. Harry is beginning to show verge-of-adulthood traits such as guilt, anger and compassion for the underdog, and, when confronted with evidence that things and people are not always as they seem, handles these confusing and magical situations as any young adult would. Revelations about his past and his parents are both painful and surprising, but, after the initial upset, Harry regroups and carries on. (Can you tell, I'm trying very hard not to give the plot away?) Yes, a main character dies, and no, it's probably not who you think. It does have a profound impact on the story and on Harry, and this will undoubtedly reverberate in the books to come. Suffice it to say, some of the recurring characters have newly revealed motivations. This book is everything we've come to expect from Harry Potter; a page-turning story; unforgettable characters--both good and those we love to hate--great tragic and comic scenes AND there is a new depth to both characters and story. This should appeal to everyone. J.K. Rowling--You go girl!!
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT BOOK!! Review: This book was really exciting. Although it could have been shorter, it still was excellent. Once you lift the book, you will not be able to drop it. It took me about three days to finish it. I stayed up late into the night reading it. THANKS J.K. ROWLING!!!
Rating: Summary: excellent continuation! Review: As an adult, I've enjoyed these books greatly. I found this new book truly an excellent addition to the series. I only hate that I will have to wait another two or three years for the next one! It's still so soon after the release, that I won't give any real details except to say that it lives up to the hype, and that it reveals a lot about Harry and Albus that's I'd always wanted to know.
Rating: Summary: HP: OotP Review: Hey i just finished reading the book. Lets cut to the quick. I liked books 3 and 4 more. However, as they were both some of the best stuff ive ever read, OotP is still an amazing book! The only thing i have bad to say about it is that in the beginning, it kind of dragged on a bit. Once chapter 8 or 9 hits, it starts getting good. Good Things: New DADA teacher is sooooo evil... Love her. Fred adn George are about the coolest people ever. We see dumbledore in battle for the first time. The death scene is great, so well written. (no im not telling you who it is) EVERYTHING ELSE! YOU LEARN SO MUCH!
Rating: Summary: Absolutely FABULOUS! Review: Book 5 is everything I hoped it would be. Once I started reading I could hardly put it down! I can't wait for the next in the series, and I sincerely hope it doesn't take 3 MORE years to come out. :)
Rating: Summary: Another winner from Rowling with a few annoyances Review: I really liked this book, I would rate it 4.5. My only complaint is in the first 400 or so pages the unfair things that happen to Harry just seem to be getting out of hand. It will frustrate me when reading something and it seems a simple soulution is readily available but the characters don't use it. Or when some simple communication could solve some misunderstandings. I realize these things happen in real life so they are to be expected but I felt bombarded with them in the first half of the book. This is my only quibble though, and really it's not a very big one. The last half of the book flew, I couldn't wait to see how it turned out. I need to say right now that Fred and George Rule!! They are now without a doubt my favorite characters. I could go on forever but what really needs to be said anyway? You know your going to read it even if I said it was the worst one yet. Buy it.
Rating: Summary: This Book Catches the Golden Snitch! Review: I got this book on the afternoon of 6-21. I could NOT put it DOWN! I am usually a fast reader, but not usually so fast that I can finish a book this size in 2 days! It is so enthralling that you feel as sucked into the story as Harry was in the Chamber of Secrets!!! This story is darker and edgier than the previous books. A lot of what was hinted in book 4 comes to pass in book 5, many mysteries that might have had you wondering in previous books will be revealed. The story thunders along with the suspense of wondering when (and where) Lord Voldemort and his Death Eaters will strike at Harry and those he cares about most deeply . As I said before the story is dark...unfortunately (for Harry) there are more low parts than high (but this makes for a good story). J.K. Rowling's writing is superb. She makes you feel as if these characters are your dearest friends and you cannot stop reading because you want to know exactly what is happening to them. Her imagination and use of description paints a picture of the story in your mind. After reading this book I feel like I have seen the movie...it is THAT vivid! Professor Umbridge is extremely frightful and I am so thankful that none of MY teachers had one of her quills for me to use when I had to write lines for punishment. You also will begin to understand better the reasons for Snape's treatment of Harry. Hogwarts will seem quite a different place from the Hogwarts of the previous books, but there is always a ray of light at the end of the tunnel. This is probably THE roughest time Harry has known in his life so you feel a lot for him during the story.
