Rating: Summary: A GREAT BOOK TO READ Review: In our Lanuages Arts class we had to read a book and I choose the book Harry Potter and the order of the Phoenix. The book has great characters that I enjoy and you may too, if you read this book. What I liked about the book is that this is the climax of the series. Harry learns a dark secret about himself. If you are looking for a science fiction book then you should pick up this book today.
Rating: Summary: Running On Empty Review: Strip away the phenomenal (and somewhat mystifying) popularity of these books, and ignore for a moment (if you can) the very impressive money and fame involved, and what you have here, I think, is a journeyman writer who's running out of gas. I'm a professional editor, so perhaps I'm prejudiced, but one of my pet peeves is that as soon as any new author gets famous, they think they're geniuses and promptly dispense with any sort of editing advice whatsoever. So do you recall that old Vaudeville definition of a baseball game--"twenty minutes of action crammed into three hours"? Book 5 is, of course, a literary example of the same principle. It might have made a good 350-page book. Or 250. Furthermore, the author has not only not shed her earlier writer's "tics," but she's added two more to that dubious arsenal--namely, grave overuse of the dash to indicate an interrupted speech, and a really woeful repetition of the modifier "slightly" to adjectives. Hello, editor. Of course, I read the blasted thing--aloud. (Which means I got to edit out hundreds of "slightlys.") And the audience for which it was intended--my ten-year-old son--liked it well enough, although he did get bored at times. If I could speak as a reader myself, though, I would say that my chief disappointment with the whole series is that the standard little morality plays are all being worked out entirely within the Wizarding world. HarryRonandHermione Good, MalfoysandVoldemort Bad. I think it would be much more interesting to get a basically sympathetic view of the young wizards and witches, but then every now and then show them scaring the bejesus out of humans and doing evil things to them; they ARE witches and wizards, after all. And just as it's interesting to see the strife and turmoil within the Wizarding world, it would stand to reason that they would show a certain solidarity amongst themselves too. As it is, it's just plain black and white, and JKR is running hard up against the essential conundrum of the good-vs.-bad genre, which is that she's got to keep inflating the evil and the peril in order to try to keep us in suspense. It's essentially the same dilemma faced by, well, comic book writers. Superman, for instance--if he's super, how do you keep him challenged? How do you keep the danger plausible? I do give Ms. JKR every possible plaudit for her really remarkable sales achievements, but I also wish she'd stop believing all the genius hype and just write good, tight, light fantasy. Anyway, I devoutly hope the next book is not 1,500 pages long. Not for my son's sake, but for mine!
Rating: Summary: Pure Enjoyment Review: This probably isn't the best Harry Potter book, but it is still a great book. I think, Ms. Rowling does a great job portraying Harry Potter as a teenager--some of the struggles, emotions, and dilemmas that some people go thru at that age. I think for some people it might be difficult to read because of this, and also because it's so long, but after reading this I'm having a hard time waiting until the next book comes out! I'm currently re-reading it and so far, I've found that it's even better the second time around.
Rating: Summary: On the defense Review: I have read quite many of the below criticisms of this book. Not that there is any more need for more, however, I will need to put my two cents here: If you are buying this book as a stand alone story to be enjoyed, DON'T. You will find it dull, painfully long, and boring AND you'll turn yourself off of the rest of the books. Harry Potter series is meant to be a septology. The fifth installment of the Harry Potter books is more of a bridge work that ties everything to the upcoming 6th book instead of a whole new adventure on its own, as the first 4 books. I believe that people who have read it and found it to be lacking something that the other Harry Potter books possessed, this would be it. I believe this book builds more clues to the foundation that JK Rowling already laid with the first 4 books. I can see that she chose to make this book a lot longer because much needed to be told about backgrounds, characters to be explained, and growing pains to be described, as the story is very complex. I am convinced that had JK Rowling not taken the direction of building a long bridge with the 5th book to the end of the stories, she would have lost quite a bit fans going "that was a great story and a pile of imaginative material but lacked convincing characters and adequate story development..." I did not want to describe you the book, as it would defeat the purpose of reading it yourself, just wanted to put a different light to all other criticisms about the length/contents of it. It is a fantastic book but to be enjoyed only if you read the first four books and you're into fantasy-mystery genre.... Or just simply a Harry Potter die-hard fan as I am. :-)
Rating: Summary: Book Six. The Real Battle will Begin!! Review: Book five only a set up for book six, everyone will be expecting great things. J.K should not take too much time writing book six because of the anticipation of what is going to happen next. I hope she tells us why Dumbledore trusts Snape with his life and that more about what happened to Sirius will be said. Lots will die and I think Percy will realize he's been stupid and come back home.
Rating: Summary: Perfect Review: This is by far my favorite of the 5 amazingly written books by the one and only J.K. Rowling. She has done it again. I even read it in about a week and a half, and I was on vacation! Read it, it is well worth the magical and spellbinding time.
Rating: Summary: Order of the Phoenix Review: I love the Harry Potter series. I think all the books are written with incredible detail and provide an amazing world for the reader to enter. The fifth book in the series, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is no exception. It is filled (all 870 pages of it) with suspense, magic, and surprise. It follows Harry and his friends Ron and Hermione through one of their most memorable years at Hogwarts. They are forced to endure a horrible new teacher named Professor Umbridge and they all must work to save themselves and the whole magic community from You-Know-Who. I did have one small problem with this book, however. I thought it was put to too high of standards. People expected another J.K. Rowling masterpiece and I, personally, was a little let down by this book. Of course it was good, but it was not my favorite. I think it was missing something, but I can't put my finger on what. Overall, it was still a great book to read and I would recommend it to anyone and everyone.
Rating: Summary: Harry Potter Book Review Review: I really liked all of the Harry Potter books and couldn't wait for the Order of the Phoenix to come out. They all seemed to take me to another place in the world that is completely imaginary. They are always doing something different from sneaking out to visit Hagrid under the Invisibility Cloak to starting their own Defense Against the Dark Arts Class. They always, no matter what, keep you thinking until the end especially the more recent books the Order of the Phoenix the most. Although I think the Order of the Phoenix could have been a lot better without Sirius dying. All in all these books are definitely and probably always will be the best books I have ever read.
Rating: Summary: The best one so far Review: I'm sure all have seen and read the plot statements, so I won't describe them here. I've seen some reviews that claim that the books are boring, or repetitive or something like that. I'm not quite sure what these reviewers were expecting. I had heard about Harry Potter before, but I thought it was all hype, until I had the opportunity to read them for myself. I started to read the first book just to see what it was like, and I was hooked after 10 pages; I read all of the other books at that time (up to book 4) within a week. These books are chronicling a development in the wizarding world of Harry Potter just as much as they're chronicling the life of Harry Potter himself. They are supposed to get darker, if logic is to be followed. How can you have something "light and fluffy" and expect it to be gripping? All the tension that is begun at the end of book 4 is wonderfully continued here in book 5, and Ms. Rowling's portrayal of Harry as a flawed (ergo realistic) person is quite well done. It makes you feel angry with, as well as sorry for and proud of Harry, and leaves you waiting with bated breath for the next volumes. This series doesn't hold back with the drama and is as realistic as one could imagine fantasy to be. Sure, I get annoyed at some obvious caraciatures (how in blazes can Draco Malfoy be such a bloody GIT??? You'd think he'd realize how old his act gets!) but Harry Potter will never go away. I'm just sad that Ms. Rowling says that book #7 will be the last one ever. P.S. I had originally ranked #3 as the best after #5, but after re-reading #4, i put it on equal tier with #3. Books 1 and 2 are more "stand-alone" to me. I'd compare the Harry Potter series to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. Both ran for 7 seasons (series), and both had a continuing story arc beginning in season/book 3 (the beginning of the Dominion conflict in DS9, the escape of Wormtail and Sirus in "Azkhaban") which grew to the final climax in season/books 7.
Rating: Summary: Must Read Review: In my English class we are writing reveiws for Amazon.com. I thought Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix was a little boring at first but after the first four chapters it got interesting. One of the best parts is when Ron becomes Keeper of the Gryffindor Quidditch Team. Let me tell you Ron is horrible. Harry and his friends make an army to fight Voldemort, it's awesome. But the most surprising thing is that Voldemort possesses Harry. I mean one day Harry is worrying about O.W.L.S the next if Voldemorts possessing him. I would read Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix because of the adventure, surprises, and sadness.
