Rating: Summary: JK Rowling needs an editor Review: I've been reading HP since the beginning, and I love all of them. Order of the Phoenix is just as good as the past books, even better with the hint of a dark side. However, I am more than a little disappointed in Rowling. I hope that before she releases Books 6 and 7, she takes the time to learn how to write properly. Don't get me wrong, she has an amazing imagination and she knows how to bring a reader into the story and feel as if they are there. But if you compare the actual text to classics from the past, you will notice her lack of sophistication. I don't believe she is doing this for her younger readers' sake. She has no problems putting in 10 point vocabulary words that many 10-15 year olds would not understand. Maybe the editors that she has are a little nervous about criticizing her, thinking that she's already making billions of dollars, why risk it??? By taking the time to edit the book properly, the readers will get much more out of it. Heading into Book 6, Harry will be turning 16. With Harry's reading level increasing, Rowling's should as well. I hope that she will take the time to cut out the unnecessary adverbs scattered in every other sentence and stop repeating everything that was written in the previous books. I think that the readers have a good understand of the story and don't need it reiterated in every book. Back to the story - I cant say enough good things. I laughed, I cried, and I cant wait to see what happens next...
Rating: Summary: Totally Different! Review: I finished the book in 2 days and now that I had this urgent feeling to share my thoughts about the 5th book of this marvelous serie, I'm writing this review. First of all I'd like to start with a confession. I really didn't like the first half of the book and got so disappointed of the things happening in the muggle world and what happened before the King's Cross. But somehow I forced myself to read because I had a feeling that this couldn't be it! So I read and read and then as all the readers, and also Harry himself, found out something extraordinarily huge! I won't make any comments on this enourmous information Harry was given by Dumbledore for the people who hasn't read the book yet. Through the end of the book, I realized that J.K. Rowling has done a really good job explaning the emotions of a teenager, the emotions people get caught in when they lose someone so important for themselves and the feelings of disappointment for the people they had praised for years. As I'm ending this review I'd like to say that though this book was totally different from the other 4, it wasn't lacking any adventure nor shocking events. This book was as amazing as the other ones!
Rating: Summary: different Review: I have to admit I wasn't looking forward to this book. Although I liked the others, I was worried that the publisity, which I wont even get started on, would ruin it.Boy, was I wrong. This one is AT LEAST as goods as the others, although it does feel different. Its much darker, though not to the point relly affecting the book, it does change the mood. The story is once again about Harry Potter and his time at Hogswarts.Voldemort has returned although no one beleives Harry or Dumblemore. There is a new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, who has it out for Harry. There is a critacal death in this one. Although it is touching, I at least saw it coming from about the fifth chapter. It was a good book , but I'm not sure it meet the hype.
Rating: Summary: A bit of a disappointment Review: The book was something of a disappointment. There are many bells & whistles near the beginning indicating that something great is going to happen, but at the end it is not a great event. Fred & George Weasley's humour is perhaps the best part of the book. Zacharias Smith also intrigued me, but Rowling apparently forgot he was there after a few chapters. Professor Umbridge is funny and (nastily) interesting. But the real conflict is not between Harry & Voldemort, but between Harry's friends who know Voldemort is a real threat, and the corrupt and incompetent politicians in the Ministry of Magic who want to deny that, because it might upset their own comfortable applecart. I don't think JKR was quite in control of her own materials for some part of this book; perhaps too much fame too soon, or maybe the story I heard about dis- covering a character who shouldn't be there yet and having to revise the book from the beginning. (Not sure if that's a true rumor, but I heard it.) Anyway, I hope books 6 & 7 will be better. In my opinion, books 3 (Prisoner of Azkaban) & 4 (Goblet of Fire) are the best in the series so far. Also, I love the charac- ters, Harry, Ron, Hermione, Dumbledore, Hagrid, McGonagall, etc. I wonder what the books would be like if they hadn't achieved so much fame so early on? I suspect they would all 7 be published by now, and they might be a bit shorter. Anyway, all good wishes to J.K. Rowling. Is she perhaps just a bit similar to Sybill Trelawney?
Rating: Summary: Still magical, yet slightly dissapointing. Review: OK, the bad news: Overall, the book was a very good read. But JUST a very good, as opposed EXELENT, which JKR has been in the previous books. I found that some parts (especially during their stay at Grimmuald-uh, don't ask me to spell it- place) could have been condenced to quicken the pace. The magic just didn't seem to sparkle as well as in the previous books, it lacked the same sence of organization and suspence that Goblet of Fire had. Perhaps I set my expectations too high, but the climax was a bit dissappointing; too many characters in a complicated, hard-to-grasp setting. The climax contrasts with the reat of the book; the climax has a lot of action not as visualizable as it could of been, as opposed to a not-as-suspenceful rising action that was described at lenght without much action. I expected the big "Now I'm going to tell you everything" part to be something leaving me spellbound, startled, suprised, and piece together things not understood. But, alas, not quite as I expected. Predictable. Punctuated with Harry throwing things. Even why some people turn to ghosts is a let down. Also, many characters (Mrs. Weasly holding back information, Ron suddenly in the spotlight, Magonagal suddenly seeming to deserve a teacher of the year award, many backstabbers) seemed rather off character. Not to mention Harry and his angery issues. A Bit overplayed. The good news: It introduces several interesting new characters (Umbridge, "Loony" Luna, Tonks) and brings back many (well practiclally all of) the old characters. It keeps you longing to read on. I give it 4 stars compared to Rowling's other books. If compared to all books in general, it would be a 5 auto in my oppinion. The death, although without as much perpos as Ced's, is hearbreaking, as is reading Harry Trying to deal with it. It gives more detail into things such as the hospital, Harry's parent's pasts, Cho and Harry, and many other things that keeps you reading on, longing for more when the book ends. If you have read this far into my review, I better stop writting before I write a book as lenthy as HP5.
Rating: Summary: Loved It Review: I couldn't put this book down(just like I couldn't put down the first 4 installments) This was probably my least favorite book in the series, but the magic is still there. My biggest critism would have to be that it's a bit repetitive. Harry's outbursts(which border on hissy fits) are done a bit too often, as is Hermione's nagging. The villians are to over the top. I've heard enough about snape and draco malfoy, it's time for them to move on. But, I thought Umbridge was a great villian and jennifer Saunders HAS to play her in the movie. I also liked Luna Lovegod as a character addition and thought her and Harry's interaction at the end of the year was suprisingly touching. JK Rowling managed to juggle a lot of charaters and plot points and most were wrapped up nicely, while leaving enough questions for the next book. Isn't everyone wondering how Harry did on his O.W.L.S.? I can't wait for the next book, and I hope I don't have to wait another three years for it.
Rating: Summary: Can't wait for more Review: I loved this book just like the four before it. I think the reason they are so good is because she gets all of your emotions involved. If you have not read any of the other Harry Potter books this one will make you want to. My favorite so far. I just really hope she does not really wait another 2 years to release the next book.
Rating: Summary: A Good Read. Review: This book was good. I didn't like it as much as I liked the last books, and there were a few parts that dragged. I enjoyed the new characters, the growth of the known characters, and the paths some of them made. It's very entertaining, and I can't wait for the next one.
Rating: Summary: Rollicking good read Review: The latest installment in the Potter series deals with many teen and adult issues and how they interact with each other. the underlying theme of good verus evil in all of us is very dominant in this book, i feel. The lessons learned for everyone in these books is superbly done and entertains as well with imagination and humor. I do not understand how anyone would say these books were works of the "devil". Read them enjoy them and let your kids roam the imaginary world. it is far safer than this real one!
Rating: Summary: A must read Review: Let me start off that I really enjoyed this book. It was fun, exciting, and a good continuation of the series. But... it could have been cut by at least fifty pages if not more. There was no need for the book to be so long. While the best written book of the series it was not the "best". Harry became a whiny little snot and almost alienated the only friends he had. The end was a let down and towards the middle of the book you could almost see how it was going to end. The romance and the death of a character were also let downs. I am a huge fan of this series and I had waited such a long time for this book. At the end I felt a little disappointed with how things turned out. I am not saying was awful. I am just trying to say that if you are a big fan like myself; be warned that at the end you may feel a little let down. Because of all the hype and all the waiting. Even so read this book and maybe the next will be 5 stars.
