Rating: Summary: A world According to Garp Review: The World According to Garp by John Irving intrigues the reader opening their imagination into Garp's perspective of the world. Don't let the books heftiness discourage you, it reads extremely fast. The book will play like a movie in your head. John Irving posses a talent to precisely describe a situation without having to go on about it for pages, one of the reasons why it reads as fast as it does. In this book you will be introduced to a perception on life unlike any you have encountered before. Jenny Fields, Garp's mother, bends around the natural moral standards. She decides to have a baby without the involvement of a man, how she does that you will have to read up on. After having T.S. Garp and raising him through the younger portion of his life she wrights a book about her experiences, Sexual Suspect. The book expresses her feminist feelings about life and makes her famous. She then opens up her own care house for woman. At this care house Irving introduces you into the extreme feminist group of the Ellen Jameson's, a radical group that will blow your mind when you read what they stand for. Meanwhile Garp is trying to survive in a harsh world. Garp raises a family and attempts to write his own books. When his books are not the success he dreamed of, Garp gets a little crazy, everyone only knows him for being the son of Jenny Fields. His Marriage does will not bore you either. Garp and his wife, Helena, are equally in love with one another but yet they both act upon lust toward other individuals. The book contains many passages that will twist or agree with your way of thinking. The World According to Garp covers all aspects of life through the experiences of Garp and Jenny. John Irving has done an excellent job bringing his characters to life. They will make you happy, sad, or even mad, but you will always want to read on.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT! Review: To be honest, this book was my first one of John Irving's, but i must say: IT WON'T BE THE LAST! John Irving pulls you into this book of loves, lusts, and life. I am just thirteen and even at my age i loved and understood it. What i think I liked most about this book is that it was different from most books today. It didn't have a certain plot, other than showing you this man's life, from pre-birth, to post-death. This book was amazing and i would reccomend it to anyone who is mature enough to handle it. Oh, and the movie is great too!
Rating: Summary: Irving's Imagination Knows no Limits. Review: When The World According to Garp was first published I had just been born. I must confess that until recently I had never heard of this book. Then, Irving publishes A Widow for One Year and all of a sudden everything I read seems to carry a glowing review of that book. More importantly, all reviews have wistful references to Garp and the impact the book had on American culture. Since I'm a lover of good literature, I bought the book in order to find out what the hoopla was all about. Gee, I wasn't disappointed. This book is so imaginative, complex, funny, and yes, weird, that I could not stop reading. Yet, despite the book's wild plot and unorthodox characters, we must not be fooled: this is a book that deals with serious issues. In addition, Irving's ability to include stories-within-the-story further confirms his gifts as a storyteller. I didn't give the book 5 Stars because I felt the last chapter was not needed--somehow it detracted from the book as a whole.
