Rating: Summary: very fast page turner Review: i'm becomming a bigger and bigger fan of Stuart Wood's books..this is the second stone barrington novel I've read..
he keeps things jumping at a pretty quick pace but I never felt lost while reading this book. Plenty of colorful characters abound as well, most of which are flawed..some more than others. But I find that more interesting than the formulaic black and white of good vs. bad.
Stone has crises of conscience in this book. Torn between what's right and what could make his life better. This goes both with his personal life as well as his work.
The book reminds me a little of James Patterson's earlier work, before he became too formulaic.
Definetly a great read and I look forward to reading the rest in the series!
Rating: Summary: My first Woods, but also my last Review: In this story, Stone Barrington is walking home one night when famous new anchor Sasha Nijinsky takes a 12-story dive from her balcony to land on a pile of dirt right in front of Barrington. Assuming that she is dead and that it wasn't an accident, Stone rushes into her building to her floor to try and catch the pusher before he/she can escape. In the interim, while being transported to the hospital, Sasha's ambulance is in an accident, and she disappears. Not knowing whether or not she is dead or alive, Stone and his partner follow up the investigation as a missing person/homicide. As the case unfolds, Stone is faced with a moral dilemma and a decision which ultimately is made for him. As he makes the transition from cop to lawyer (good fortune seems to fall in his lap), Stone helps to wrap up the case which has a semi-predictable ending but with a few surprise twists along the way.
Rating: Summary: Ah, a new series to look forward to???? Review: New York Dead is my first Wood's book, but it won't be my last. I have to agree with some other reviewers....New York Dead is a silky smooth read. The plot unrolls itself without interruption from the first page to the last. The characters, both weird and normal (is there such a thing) are entertaining to say the least. Isn't it the search of entertainment that keeps us avid readers coming back for more??? Stuart Woods delivers. Can anyone survive the fall from a twelve story building? Well they do in New York Dead. That's not the only surprise in the book. Get the book and read it you won't regret it.
Rating: Summary: A Light, But Lively Read or "Nothing Dead Here" Review: NEW YORK DEAD is pure entertainment. Quick and fun. Stuart Woods has created an enviable character in Stone Barrington. He always gets the girl...in fact he gets all the girls. Stone is smart, handsome, debonair and he spends alot of time in bed. Even the tragic events in Barrington's life like losing his job or a romance ending are so not tragic that little sympathy is evoked. With a wry sense of humor and very little effort, Stone goes about solving mysteries. Novelist Woods deftly maintains the suspense throughout the story and rewards the reader with surprises at the end. This is a book (and a series) that will appeal to men and women, so long as they are not in the market for gripping, gut-wrenching intensity. - Robert John Estko, the author of the suspense thriller, EVIL, BE GONE (available on amazon.com)
Rating: Summary: easy read Review: Rating System: 1 star = abysmal; some books deserve to be forgotten 2 star = poor; a total waste of time 3 star = good; worth the effort 4 star = very good; what writing should be 5 star = fantastic; must own it and share it with othersSTORY: When off-duty detective Stone Barrington is a witness to body landing at his feet from a several story apartment complex, he is thrust into a mystery of money, jealousy and police politics. MY FEEDBACK: 1) Woods has a very easy to read style of writing. You can zip through his book in no time 2) Warning: Adult content. Explicit sex, profanity and alternate lifestyles within these pages. Some reader may find this offensive. 3) Biggest complaint I had was how immature I felt the author handled the sex. It was almost like a dirty old man sharing his personal fantasies vs. an author deftly crafting a steamy scene. 4) Stone is a strong, fun character to follow and he is cliché in all the ways that readers like and keep coming back for more. OVERALL: I think the average person will find this a good read, even though I personally didn't care for the ending much. Its not that I felt the author jipped me or tied things up too nicely, I personally didn't care for the central content of why things happened. I've been told that this is his only book done this way and if I liked his writing then try his other Barrington books. I will do this.
Rating: Summary: This book felt right from the start! Review: Stuart Woods' writing strolls along effortlessly yet has more twists and turns than about any author I've read. The very effective element of surprise in `New York Dead' stands this one up beside a Robert Ludlum novel. The surprises were truly unexpected and kept me completely disoriented. Stuart Wood's characters are also very well done. Stone Barrington's exclusion for being `white bread', as well as his financial difficulties and bout of unemployment was interesting, realistic and refreshing. Dino Bachetti and the self preservation of the precinct created an extremely appealing obscurity around the case. Even Cary Hilliard's duality worked for me which was surprising in itself. Too many characters became somehow connected kind of making Manhattan feel like it was inhabited by about two dozen people, but I was able to overlook most of that. I do wish Scoop Berman's role had been a completely anonymous character or left out completely. He was one too many and kind of an eye roller. In my opinion, Stuart Wood's smooth delivery puts him next in line to John Sandford. This could be the author I've been looking for!
Rating: Summary: I had to struggle to put the book down! I needed the ending! Review: The reason that I read this book first is that it is the first in the Stone Barrington series and I have an obsession with being chronological about novel characters. However, I wasn't at all disappointed with the writing! This book has all the necessary components of a contemporary detective novel! A wacky partner, seduction, news crowds, and an unexpected ending! I managad to read this very quickly, and that doesn't always happen. Also, I learned everything I need to know about police safety. Get shot, go through hell. One thing I am skeptical about: how can anyone survive a twelve story fall? I know it's possible, but only about one in a hundred thousand. Anyway, excellent way to pass the time, and Stuart Woods is on my positive list!
Rating: Summary: Nice! Review: There can never be enough detective novels set in NYC for my taste (I could be bias since I live here). After reading this book I can say that I look forward to reading the rest of the Stone Barrington series. This book is very well written and the story was very enjoyable. Of course the most important thing was the the story flowed, the pages kept turning.
Rating: Summary: A Good Start For A Series Review: This book is Stuart Woods at his best. Woods does a fabulous job of creating the well rounded Stone Barrington character. This was not the first book I had read in the series, so it was interesting to see how Stone Barrington went from cop to lawyer. The plot line in the story is excellent and definitely keeps the pages turning. I had no idea what was going to happen at the end, and that is just the way I like it. I highly recommend this book and can't wait to start the next in the Stone Barrington series.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Book Review: This book takes Stone Barrington from detective to lawyer. It was so interesting. This is a great charactor. I highly recommend this to anyone looking for a great mystery. Easy to get into and not a boring page. Stuart Woods is one of my favorite authors as I have now read five of his books and plan on reading them all. Don't miss this one.
