Summary: Ellen Foster
Review: This story is about a young Ellen, who was never loved until finally, she is placed in the home of a caring foster mother.
Ellen refers to her as her "New Mama."

Before getting to that point though in her life, she was first raised by a drunken/neglectful father, and a sickly mother who dies first in the story. It was after that event that Ellen went to live with her grandmother, who only treated her as a slave by making her work in the cotton fields, and then after that, she went to live with her very unloving aunt and niece, who were only mean to her.

Throughout the story she has a colored friend, namely Starletta, who is the one young friend that loves Ellen unconditionally. She is always there for her.

As I read this book, it made me feel sad that so many children are unloved in this world, and cast about, without any guidance ever. Ellen was a strong girl though, who in spute of that, stood up strong in all of her adversity.
