Rating: Summary: Well Written,Honest,Tearful Review:
The brother Pelzer writes his own account of the abuse he suffered in this book 'A Brother's Journey. It is no less excellent writing and stlye the David Pelzer's series of books. If you didn't believe what you read in 'A Child Called It', then you must read this book to conclude that what was told was true. I admire both of the Pelzer's for their courage in coming forth and telling their stories. I also recommend to the reading audience to get not only this book, A Child Called It and Lost boy; but also read abuse from a woman's perspective as well in the book, Nightmares Echo
Rating: Summary: A healing journey. Review: In A Brothers Journey, Richard Pelzer takes readers through his tortured childhood, showing remarkable candor in his writing. Holding nothing back, he gives vast insights into the horrors of child abuse. This book is not just a compendium of his sick mother's atrocities. It is the story of a boy's journey from being taught to participate in the abuse and degradation of his own brother, to becoming the primary victim of the abuse. Pelzer uses that journey to provide insight into the mind of the abused. Not only does he share his emotions as events unfold, but helps the reader to understand his thoughts and behaviors as he struggled to survive in a world of constant fear. This is a healing journey, and a must read for anyone who has ever been abused. It is also an important reminder of the fragility of children, and what they will endure when deprived of the love they so desperately seek. Anyone who has influence in the life of a child must read this book.
Rating: Summary: riding Dave's coattails Review: This was an absolute waste of money. I have read "A Child Called It" and was blown away by the story. I found it very saddening and infuriating at the same time. "A Brother's Journey"; however, was just a load of junk. Many times the author says "I can't remember what exactly happened" or "I don't remember anything that summer"... "I don't remember" seems to be his favorite phrase. The book lacks substance as well as a great writing style. If people absolutely need to hear his story it might have been best to hire a ghostwriter. He makes it clear that he didn't "catch on" meaning he was a slow child- I think it's very obvious by the way the book was written.
Now don't mistunderstand what I'm trying to say, I'm not minimizing child abuse, I'm just critiquing a horrible author and a terrible book.
