Summary: Excellent artwork! And what child doesn't love this story!
Review: Each page in this book is definitely a piece of art! Mary Engelbreit outdid herself on this one. I initially checked it out from our local library and then decided I wanted it for our girls. It's a book I want them to be able to read to their own children one day! I would definitely recommend it!

Summary: The Night Before Christmas illustrated by Tasha Tudor
Review: I discovered this book 31 years ago, for my daughter and it is still loved by all the family. The illustrations are wonderful, warm, charming and delightful and bring a special meaning to the story. We still read it to all the young children on Christmas Eve and for adults we read the story and pass a grab bag gift every time the word THE is mentioned. It would not be Christmas without this book. It is magical.

Summary: The Night Before Christmas, Ruth Sanderson Illustrator
Review: I purchased the hardcover edition for my 2 year old daughter. The Illustrations are absoulutely beautiful. The only problem I have with it is that it is not the original poem by Moore. It has been censored, yes, censored. The 2 lines "The stump of a pipe he held tight in his teeth, And the smoke it encircled his head like a wreath." have been removed! I understand that smoking is no longer a "PC" thing in this day and age, but when you are purchasing a classic poem, one you remember from your childhood, you expect to get the actual poem. I was disappointed that this fact had not been noted in the product description. I guess it's a little 1984ish to me, to start censoring a book and not inform the consumer.

Summary: Christmas
Review: I think this book was great at the start. St.Nicholas would go all around the world to the good girls and boys and put candy in their stockings. St.Nick would start each Christmas Eve with a shout to all his deer. I enjoyed this book.

Summary: Amazing Illustrations
Review: I was looking for a copy of "Twas the Night Before Christmas" for my son's first christmas. As a child, I remember reading the story every christmas eve and wanted to start this tradition with my own family. There are so many versions out there, I didn't much care which one I got as long as the pictures were nice. I decided on this version because it is a board book which will be much easier for chubby little fingers to grab, and more durable than thin paper pages.

This version is illustrated by Bruce Whately (some of the other reviews listed seem to be referring to a Mary Englebreit version). Bruce Whately's illustrations are absolutely wonderful! They are so realistic looking - you expect the reindeer to literally jump off the page! The pictures are drawn as if they were filmed from a camera - some arial shots, close ups, and the facial expressions on Santa and the reindeer are precious. As soon as the book came in the mail, and I saw the illustration on the cover, I was drawn to look inside. I stood there at the front door and looked at every page. I knew I couldn't wait until christmas eve to share this with my son. I read it to him that very night. Now I notice that, each time I read the story I see different details I had missed the previous time. I have so much fun pointing out all the little details to my son that sometimes we just look at pictures and don't even read the story (notice the sleeping mom and baby mouse on the first page!)

I immediately went on line and purchased Whatey's "Here Comes Santa Clause". I can't wait to get it and see more of his wonderful work!

Summary: What a disappointment
Review: If you're looking for a beautiful book with wonderful illustrations to pass down the generations, look elsewhere. This book is terrible! I decided to purchase this book based on the glowing reviews, but instead of a book filled with "beautiful illustrations" and "drawings" as stated, I'm sitting here looking at a one filled with tacky photos of Santa and reindeer tacked on by computer. Very disappointing!!!

Summary: A great book for a great price!!
Review: In preparing our list of Christmas books to share with others, we had to search far and wide on amazon to find this particular book, a paperback edition of the classic Night Before Christmas.

This is the book I've used for years when reading this story to my own children, passing on Tasha Tudor and other illustrators. Why?

Although we can find the same poem and pay a lot more, with award winning illustrators, the illustrations provided by Douglas Gorsline are surely the best. They are quite colorful, and offer details little children love looking into...cats lie sleepily on the window sill, we see an overview of the town, the presents spilling from the open sack are intriguing and plentiful, and Jolly St. Nick is -- well, quite Jolly (as you can see by looking at the cover!)

The story is an "abridged version" - I'm not sure about other parents, but we read this on Christmas Eve, and we only have so much time and energy. Everything we remember from the classic poem by Clement Clarke Moore is in this version.

(From "'Twas the Night Before Christmas, and all through the house, not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse" to "He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle, And away they all flew like the down of a thistle. But I heard him exclaim, ere he drove out of sight,"HAPPY CHRISTMAS TO ALL, AND TO ALL A GOOD-NIGHT!" In between we have everything, from the names of the eight tiny reindeer, to a belly that shakes like a bowl full of jelly, including dry leaves that before the wild hurricane fly, when they meet with an obstacle, mount to the sky".

In other words, don't be scared off by 'abridged'!)

Perhaps a hardcover edition might be more appropriate if you're giving a gift (unless you're giving to more than one child), but this book is one of the best offers we've found!

A classic done simply and inexpensively!

Summary: Lovely , nostalgic
Review: Raquel Jaramillo has brought new life to one of my favorite Christmas stories. I got it for my two young sons for Christmas 2001, but I thoroughly enjoyed my pre-Christmas preview. The "authentic" family photo album gives a new brilliance to Clement Moore's tale. Jaramillo's book is a must for everyone's Christmas collection!

Summary: A beautiful edition, to give as a gift
Review: We have an inexpensive paperback version (see our reviews) of this classic poem, and we said that's enough for us. That was before we looked through this beautifully illustrated (by Bruce Whatley) edition of The Night Before Christmas.

The lyrics are the same, from book to book, but the fanciful illustrations in this one are enough to engage adults and children as they read this book together.

The perfect gift for any family whose Christmas tradition includes reading this classic!
