Rating: Summary: You'll Love It... Review: ...if you are like me, you get tired of feeling terrible about yourself. "What have I done to feel this blue, why do I deserve this treatment, how come I feel like I'm a magnet for all the bad things that could happen to a person..." I would ask myself many a time. Life truly is not worth feeling rotten about, especially if you had not done anything to feel rotten about. I've discovered that I was feeling bad because I either had not or could not meet somebody else's standards. And believe me, no matter what I've done, like take out the trash, for instance, there was someone who let me know how inadequate the job I did was...I was a hopeless sap. Then there is the entire matter of some people needing to feel like they have bested me just cause that's how things are...Church did not help me because it seemed to me that it was filled with the self same people I was trying to avoid. (Church folk can really make you feel bad, you know?) So instead of changing them, I decided I would change myself and my own attitudes. I tripped upon the book browsing at a local mall. The title caught my eye and I grabbed it and raced for the checkout. It is an easy to read, easy to digest book of 600 some pages. The left page side of the book has one or two applicable quotes of any one from like Kermit the Frog to important hifalootin philosophers like Goethe. If the reader just wants to flip through these qoutes like a daily affirmation, he could do so...John-Roger and Peter on the right hand side of the book gives the reader the why's, the when's, and the how's of negative thoughts and how to not focus on them...it is something that has helped me a lot and I hope the reader will find it is helpful, too...
Rating: Summary: This is a really wonderful book Review: I have battled depression on and off for much of my life, and I have to say that this is the best self-help book I have ever read. It is absolutely wonderful. It makes you want to memorize every quote and every precious, uplifting word of wisdom. Some people might say that the things in this book are common sense, but if that's the case, when I look around I see that common sense isn't so common! This book really is a must have for anyone who wants to improve their disposition and feel better emotionally.
Rating: Summary: Spoonful of sugar makes the medicine go down Review: I think Mary Poppins sort of sums up this book. As a child I would always be cheered up by the movie (Mary Poppins of course). Well if I have a dark and despondent cloud these days I pick this book up. This is a book that will sweeten the bitterness of trying times for you.
Rating: Summary: A good one Review: Like any other self help book this too was interesting and most helpful. Unlike other self help books at times this book is very funny too. Writers suggest to have healthy fears such as having sex with gorillas etc. and that all other different fears are not more but just illusions. The bottom line - if you strive for knowledge or if you have negative thoughts swimming safely in the ocean of your mind. Have this book, then read it, then apply things you've learned from it in daily life. RESULTS = almost PERFECT
Rating: Summary: Life-altering principles, humor, step-by-step guidance! Review: McWilliams explains and delivers comprehensive and understandable principles of positive-focus. This is absolutely the greatest self-help book for positive thinking that I've read yet. He addresses issues from relationship to life-threatening illness. He doesn't just blab on about the issues, he details and outlines specific strategies for dealing with crisis in a positive, effective manner. I recommend it to everyone, illness or not...this is very empowering.
Rating: Summary: Common sense in a new light Review: This excellent book is divided into 2 parts: The disease and the cure, and the latter consists of 3 sections: Accentuate the positive, Eliminate the negative and Latch onto the affirmative. It explains the fight or flight response, the effect thoughts have on the body, and the question of death. It also deals with mourning, how to focus on the positive and has a useful section on depression. Suitable quotes by inter alia Freud, Santayana, Voltaire, Emerson, Russell, Shaw, Anais Nin, Epicurus, Whitman, Keller, Hippocrates, Oscar Wilde and Maria Montessori enhance the text and help to explain things. I would not say that it is absolutely the best self-help book I've ever read ( a little more emphasis on how to influence the subconscious mind would have been valuable), but it casts welcome new light on this thing called "common sense." It is a pleasure to read and I highly recommend it.
Rating: Summary: Clarity Review: We all know what we want and we all know the things that we have to do to get what we want. Problem is that we get bogged down in negative routines and behaviours, fears and seeking approval from those around us. This book offers us very simple and very clear advice. It does this by highlighting our problems and shining enough light on them so that we are able to lose our inertia and act positively and directly. This book is a must for everyone. It's that simple.
