Rating: Summary: Old hat and pretty average Review: I guess you can say this book is OK on the basis that reading ANYTHING about how you should get with things and think positive etc etc is going to be motivating but other than that...it's not so great. You are supposed to write messages to yourself on cards and read them 3x day. Who really writes stuff like "I like myself more a little more each day" on cards and reads them 3x a day? What kind of world do we live in if that is normal, healthy behaviour? The other central idea of the book is an absolutely classic self-help truism - you are suppoed to live your life according to the following promise (that you write on a card): "I promise that that I will do the most productive thing at any given moment". Obviously if anyone could actually ever do that they'd be successful but it's clearly impossible for any living creature. No-one can even decide what the "most productive" thing is yet alone always do it. I found Tom's definition of "success" very one dimensional - i.e. he thinks it's having a lot of money. And maybe for him it is. But not everyone is the same. His advice that you drop "loser" friends and surround yourself with "successful" people is pretty grim. Any definition of success must have happiness at it's core and being that judgemental, shallow and selfish doesn't normally lead to happiness in my experience. Smugness isn't the same thing at all. My friends pick me as much as the other way around.
Rating: Summary: OUTSTANDING, ENTERTAINING, & INSPIRING!!! Review: I read this book in 1985 when I was starting a business and was scared to death most of the time. Hopkins' excellent suggestions for enthusiasm, time management, and motivation really helped me get through those tough times. Some of my evangelical Christian friends felt that the book was too humanistic, teaching reliance on power from within yourself rather than relying on a "higher power", but I did not find that to be a problem in spite of my personal philosophy. Regardless of one's spiritual walk, Hopkins' book can be a very ready guide. I recommend it to anyone who is trying to make their personal or business life more successful.
Rating: Summary: OUTSTANDING, ENTERTAINING, & INSPIRING!!! Review: I really liked this book alot. It gives a concise and specific plan for anyone willing to reach their goals in life. This is not a very long book, (less than 200 pages) however, I was distracted a lot of the time I was reading. I will definitely read this one again. I also have Tom's book- How To Master The Art Of Selling, but have not yet read it. If it's as good as this I look forward to studying it. Some self-help authors come across as either self-righteous or dry, Tom has a very entertaining style which any avid readers of success books will appreciate.
